Entry for April 20, 2007 - Land Before Time X and 3 1/2 year olds

Last night, I finally found the area of Netflix where you can watch movies online. I have to say that while I am not a fan of DRM, I do hate how long it takes Netflix to get me movies. So I wanted to try it out.

First, it loads quickly, and streams to just enough in advance so that you shouldn't have to wait on a reasonable connection. Secondly, they have a fairly broad swath of movies for many different interests. I even found a movie for my daughter, The Land Before Time X.

The only problem is that the movie seems to be targeted to first graders. My 31/2 year old was jumping almost through the entire thing. For some reason though when I ask her if she wants me to turn it off she gets upset. She doesn't want to watch it, but she also doesn't want it off. Even when I suggest another movie, she wants to keep watching the somewhat scary one. I suppose they could break down rated G movies yet further, but that would be overkill. Does anyone out there have any ideas about how to handle this? Should I not let her watch it, even though I am with her, or is she actually enjoying the thrill?

Entry for February 06, 2007 - So The World's Scientists Agree, Global Warming is Real

Yipee! The world's scientists agree that global warming is real. So what. I am a little bitter that the time that people start believing in it is the time when there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. I am a little miffed that I inherited this problem from Gen X, and whatever generation came before it. They could actually have changed something.

So what is the result of this "official" acknowledgement that the Earth getting warmer is really a problem. Well, BART here in the bay area is a little fuller, maybe there is a little less auto traffic. Maybe Toyota will sell a few more Prii today. The real problem is that it does nothing. Well, I guess not nothing, every little bit helps. Still, I can't believe that more people aren't hopping on their bikes and riding to work, or driving the smaller car to work instead of their hummer or whatever.

I think the problem is that what the report didn't have in it, and I'm sure that they wanted it to be as strongly worded as it was, is hope. There is hope that we can come to some combination of an engineering solution, alongside a conservation solution, perhaps we can keep the damage where it is instead of making it worse. What they didn't say was that the Earth would be uninhabitable in 100 years, they said that the oceans would rise, and maybe the weather patterns would be extreme.

So what can we do now, well everyone can buy a bike. We can invest in Nuclear power that uses hydroelectric to heat the reactors. We can drive 100% electric cars, we can start building more windmills, etc... And finally we can use the nuclear power at night to run CO2 scrubbers. Where we would put the CO2, who knows. Perhaps it is efficient enough to break it down into carbon and use it to build more bike frames, bodies for the electric cars, etc... We can plant trees. There are plenty of things that we can do. There are no silver bullets, we have to do all of them. We can stop wasting so much money on guns and spend more of it on cleaner technology. Maybe my generation didn't do this, but unfortunately we have the responsibility for fixing it... Well, my momma always said "life isn't fair."

Entry for August 23, 2006 - Cardinali Road Bike (Frejus or Legano?)

After doing a bunch of research on this road bike. I've figured out that the seatpost clamp with lots of O's on it seem to only be found on Frejus road frames. I still haven't found the lugs used on the bike with anything except old Bianchi bikes. Looking at the Legnano bikes, many of the components match what is on my bike. It looks a lot like something that was produced after Frejus bought Legnano. Maybe on the low end. It has a lot of character and rides like a dream. On www.classicrendezvous.com the Frejus bike that they call the "city bike" looks a lot like my bike as far as the seatpost and the wheels.

I took the bike to the bike shop for some work and the guy there told me that the bike didn't look like it came with the campy front derailleur because it didn't have the holder pin that is welded on most frames with those types of derailleur handles. I don't know where else it could have gone since I have the cable guides for the cables. Man, this bike is more of a mystery than ever, but I feel like I am getting closer to figuring it out.
