More Transactions

Gaby Hernandez, beloved (by us Trunks at least) pitcher for the Florida Marlins organization, was traded to the Mariners for MLB veteran lefthanded pitcher Arther Rhodes.

Huh?

Yep. I was a little late on this one, as it did indeed happen before the July 31st trade deadline, but I wanted to break the news to the readers of this blog. I can't imagine a worse deal!

Well, I guess it is not that bad. Gaby has been getting rocked, both at AAA Albuquerque, where he started the season, and at AA Carolina, where he improved his ERA to 4.30 (!) and went 3-0 in 4 starts. Guess Maybin and the offense helped him there... Meanwhile, the Marlins MLB team is apparently built to win this year, and can always use more help in the bullpen, provided they aren't terrible. Unfortunately for us Mets fans, the Marlins are still in the NL East race, and they are actually ahead of the Mets, who are in third place. They both are trying to catch the Phillies in a tight race to the finish. Luckily for Mets fans, the Marlins and the Phillies play three games tonight through Thursday, so somebody has got to lose. If the Mets can only beat up on the hapless Padres at the same time, they can gain some ground on one or both of them.

I'm sorry! Was this a blog post about MLB transactions or the Mets?

Gaby got rocked in his first start with the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx on Sunday.

Someone else that slipped under the radar was Eric Cyr, who pitched last night for the Jacksonville Suns after being demoted from AAA Las Vegas. He pitched a great game (a 2-hitter in 6 innings with no runs allowed, 5 K's, and 2 walks), and as usual, the Suns provided little offense to help him out.

MLB Trade Talk

Jon Meloan is now an Indian!

That makes two of our favorite Southern League stars that have been traded to the Indians. Matt LaPorta went there in the C.C. Sabathia deal, and now Cleveland has traded 3B Casey Blake and cash to the Dodgers for Meloan and Inland Empire catcher Carlos Santana.

Blake should provide some corner power that the Dodgers need, even if it means a demotion for Blake DeWitt. Meloan has been struggling as a starter for AAA Las Vegas, compiling a 4.97 ERA and 1.70 WHIP while going 5-10. Still, the man is a strikeout machine! In 45-1/3 IP last year for the Suns, he had 70 K's and only 18 walks!

Also, the Yankees have traded Jose Tabata (a former Florida State Leaguer that we missed out on, mainly because the Yankees suck) for some immedite help to try get back in the AL East race. They got OF Xavier Nady and RP Demaso Marte and gave up Tabata and three other minor league pitchers, including the 9th- and 14th-rated Yankee prospects (Ross Ohlendorf and Dan McCutchen, respectively) according to Baseball America. The Pirates are, of course out of it, so this is an EXCELLENT trade for them. Good job swiping some of the Yankees' best prospects for Major Leaguers that have hit their peak.

You can view the latest trades, including analysis of each, by the fine folks at Baseball America, here:

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/majors/trade-central/2008/

Update: 07/28/08:

Check out the FJM take on this trade at:

http://www.firejoemorgan.com/2008/07/dodger-fans-rest-easy.html

As always, good stuff.

Jeff Samardzija to close for the CHICAGO Cubs?

Could be. For all you Cubs fans, especially those that really like Notre Dame alum Jeff Samardzija, check out this link:

Cubs Notes: Samardzija could replace Wood

Current Chicago closer Kerry Wood is on the DL again (not surprisingly!), so Samardzija might get his chance. That should help increase the value of those bobbleheads we just got as a giveaway to a Daytona Cubs game. Also helping increase that value are his stats at AAA-Iowa, which are better than he's had at any level of the minor leagues! In 6 starts there (a large enough sample size for me), Jeff is 4-1 with an ERA of 3.13 and a WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) of 1.29. His Strikeouts are also up, as he's recorded over a K an inning (40 K's over 37-1/3 innings pitched). He's recorded 9 strikeouts in each of his last two starts!

Update: 7/25 @ 3:00 P.M.:

According to Yahoo! He arrived there this morning and should pitch in this weekend's series against the Florida Marlins. Although the series started yesterday, three games remain at Wrigley through Sunday--all afternoon games. The first one is going on right now--we'll have to see if they start him off in middle relief, as Sweet Lou indicated in the article.

Man, this guy can't stay out of Double-A! After a couple of poor outings in the Marlins' Major League rotation to start 2008, he is back on the Mudcats. Today he faces the Biscuits, and so far he has the lead.

The only good thing that could come of this is that it gives Burke Badenhop a chance to prove himself. Badenhop replaces Vanden Hurk as the 5th man in the Marlins' rotation. I have a feeling he'll get shelled too, or maybe I just hope so--since we haven't seen him play yet in a Carolina jersey.

Vanden Hurk is completely solving the Montgomery Biscuits. So far tonight, he has pitched 5 scoreless, 2-hit innings while striking out 7 and walking none [box score].

Cameron Maybin is still leading off, playing CF, and consistently hitting for the Mudcats. He has a 0.346 batting average with an 0.471 on-base percentage.
