Natural soul journal: exploring and protecting wilderness

Chris Crossen who is a good friend of mine has started an online project called Natural Soul Journal that I think is really cool. Check it out and forward to anyone you think might be interested in writing or supporting.

in his words:

natural soul is a new journal that offers a unique venue and forum for the subject of wilderness.
through writing, photography, and grants, we hope to establish a presence for exploring the remaining "wilderness" and how our understanding of it evolves.

wilderness is often considered "unpublishable" by many outlets, or publication remains confined to well-known contributors; natural soul offers a unique opportunity for both established and emerging artists and writers to get their work out there and for them to also play a role in aiding the areas their messages explore.

we need to protect these regions and ideals. to this end, natural soul provides micro-grants to individuals and organizations with a specific project or trip that explores or protects wilderness. submitting writers and photographers will help fund these grants. a suggsted donation of $2 -$5 will come from contributors. these funds will be pooled to provide grants. we cannot provide a great deal at first, but in a grassroots effort, every bit helps. with the continued success of the journal, we hope to eventually provide larger grants.

Alaska Fishing Trip - Next Summer

A friend of mine from college runs Alaska Trophy Fishing Safaris.

I am putting a trip together for next July 6. I already have 7 people committed, would love to get one more. Let me know if you want to throw your hat in the ring. Here's an email that I sent out to the group.

The trip is now locked and loaded. Just had a great conversation with my friend John Carlin – wish we were leaving tomorrow. Based on earlier feedback we have decided on the 6-day trip starting July 6. According to John, this is traditionally the best week of the year, averaging between 700 and 1000 Kings for the week. Split between 22-24 anglers in the camp, that is a lot of salmon. In all there are 7 species of fish that you can chase – plus lots of caribou, moose, bear etc. We are going to be way out in the bush so we’ll probably not see anyone besides those in our camp for the 6 days. The basic setup is 2 anglers per guide, option to bait cast, spin cast, or fly-fish, using drift boats and jet boats. If you want to email or speak to John personally to get any additional info let me know.

The reason that we need to lock it down is that there is another group (employees/affiliates of Gander Mountain which is like a Midwestern REI that sponsor the camp and shot an installment of We Live Outdoors that will air this Fall or winter on the OLN network) that is planning to come that same week, and they are trying to bring a big crew. So we basically need to be pretty firm now to carve out enough spots for our group. If we need to expand our group size from 8-10 I can do so, but I need to do it quickly. John recommends even numbered groups because they run 2anglers/guide, but they can accommodate odd if we need to. So please send me an email confirming your status, and the maybes please try to decide in the next week or so.

To recap the costs:

Flight from Anchorage to camp $600

Plus you need to get yourself to and from Anchorage.
My friend Steph and I checked out the Raconteurs show in San Diego at SOMA last night. Pretty good - they only have 1 albums worth of tunes to play, so it was pretty short. Their album is actually kind of all over the map, from pretty mellow to extremely raucous - which I think sort of confused the crowd. The place never really got going. Also there was no beer for sale, which might have contributed to the mellowness. Jack White has a great stage presence - he's always worth the price of admission.

They did a good job of changing up the tracks slightly from the album versions. They closed the encore with a version of Hands that started acoustic and quiet and morphed into electric and rad.

Coolest Guy on the Planet

Jen and I went over to the Hollywood Bowl last night to check out Sergio Mendes and Friends. It was a great night at the bowl - still 80 degrees at 10 PM. Our friends Janine and Chris (Bowl newbies) came along and helped pack a big feast with some good wine to wash it down. The weather, company, and food would have been enough for a great night out, and the music and festive crowd really made it spectacular. Tons of yellow and green soccer jerseys in the crowd - the Brasilians were out in force.

There were 2 opening acts. First the Maogani quartet (4 guitars) played some solid but mellow classical sambas. Sounded great, left me wanting more. Unfortunatley they don't seem to be available on YMU. The second act was a great Brasilian hip hop group led by Marcelo D2. They had a lot of energy, and seemed to be sort of dissapointed that the Bowl crowd didnt break into a big mosh pit. The music was good enough, but the vibe wasn't there.

Sergio Mendes is a legend in Brasil - he was the first to popularize the Bossa Nova sound with his landmark Brasil '66 recording. His music is ultra cool. It sounds kindof loung-y, but closer inspection reveals some real roots and depth. When he took the stage it was evident that we were in the presence of an icon - he had an incredible stage presence (he's 65) and an apparent zest for life. He's the type of guy who has played for kings and presidents, partied with the Stones, been platinum on 5 continents, and influenced countless musicians. He instnatly entered my pantheon of the coolest people I have ever seen.

On top of that, he recently released (with co-producer will.i.am) a stellar compilation album Timeless that takes his trademark sound and updates it with help from a great ensemble cast (Indie Arie, John Legend, Q-Tip). A lot of them came out on stage during his long set to play along. Also appearing was industry great Herb Alpert who orginally signed Mendes in the states as well as his wife and former Mendes vocalist Lani Hall. A really jam packed set, highlighted by the cheesy/campy performance of 80s megahit Never Gonna Let You Go that brought out the see of cellphones Freebird-lighter treatment from the packed Bowl crowd. Mick O says he has a photo.

Crowes and Kate

JT, Mike, Scott and I hacked our way across town to the Greek after work yesterday to check out the Black Crowes with Robert Randolph & the Family Band AND the Drive-By Truckers last night. For some reason the show started at 6:30 so we missed - waaaa :( - the Truckers set along with at least 95% of the attendees. How on earth do you get to Griffith Park by 6:15 on a weekday?

Robert Randolph was really solid, although again he was playing to a mostly empty house. Highlight was defnitely the bass player Danyel Morgan's vocals. Man that guy can sing. Way up high - I actually assumed it was a woman singing on the albums. Check him out in this great track.

Pressing My Way - Robert Randolph & The Family Band

From the album Live At The Wetlands Artist page on Last.fm<a title="Listen to the full song if you have Yahoo!

The real highlight of the evening though was the Black Crowes' set. The Crowes will always have a spot in my heart, because it was they along with a few other bands (Blues Traveler, Phish, Widespread Panic, Janes Addiction) who finally guided the music industry out of the talentless desert that was the eightees and IMHO opened the door for Pearl Jam, DMB, Rage, Nirvana etc. a few years later. Although my high school years were spent searching for good music (and hooking up only really with the still kicking acts of the 60s and 70s), my college years actually saw some decent bands like the Crowes rise from the ashes. My '87 prom theme which I helped pick was actually a Phil Collins song, and not a good one - oh the horror. Anyway even though I love the Crowes and owe them a huge debt of gratitude, I had never made the scene before last night. BIG mistake. They are truly a throwback band - extremely tight, extremely confident, eager to let it ALL HANG OUT for the benefit of the fans in attendance. Everything came together out there in the audience - the crowd, the music, the weather, the venue. The place came pretty unhinged, and everyone left tired and happy.

The string of great concerts continues for me. It must be something about coming to the City of Angels but these bands are just killing it, one after another. Well, everyone knows why Chris Robinson likes being in Los Angeles. Since we had back stage passes, we saw the reason first hand. All that I can say is WOW. The other guys were similarly blown away. One of whom already had her on his list but froze up when he had this golden opportunity to press his advantage. Although I will say he DID finally get up the nerve, JUST as Kate was turning around and walking out of the room. It is a huge bummer for me and basically everyone involved that the chance for this interaction to proceed was nipped in the bud.

Also hanging out back stage was Taylor Hicks (thats him playing harp with Robert Randolph in the blurry TREOpic above). Guy is actually a pretty fine musician, and seems like a cool guy.

Jen and I cruised on over the very cool Avalon Hollywood Club on Heart-Attack and Vine last night to check one of our new fave bands Gomez. Out catching bands on a Tuesday, hmmmm - pretty easy to think we might be done in the child producing department. Ian was there - he has one on the way so he is storing these nights out up for a few years.

Gomez definitely bring it live. Lots of energy - long single set with a 4 track encore. I am kind of new to their scene - the new album How We Operate is really well put together with a lot of strong tunes that hang together well. The crowd was enthusiastic and appreciative - certainly had the feeling of a band that is in the process of stepping up a level. After seeing DBT - 3 guitars really is the new two guitars.

A very big shout out to ScottR who is the hook up KING. Got me into Gomez originally with an advanced copy of the CD, and put me on the list including for the exclusive party after the show, as well as providing all of the camraderie necessary to really inhale the entire experience. In return I bought him a Bud Light (in a can!). The photo above was taken on the way home while waiting for the valet.

Jen is now a Gomez fanatic. We listened to their new album on the way home in the car (pretty strong after leaving a 2+ hour concert) AND she was listening to them at work when I logged on to IM this morning. She copied the setlist onto a cocktail napkin last night and shared it with me this AM (this technology stuff is going to catch on someday). Notice was my highlight track.
