I am still trying to deal with life “Post Katrina”. Instead
of getting better…. it has gotten worse. I had hoped that
after the anniversary something magical would happen and
I would be able to get on with life. Unfortunately, it just
hasn’t worked out that way.

I apologize to those of you who felt I was being a Bad friend,

I have used this blog to try to stay “connected” to others and to try to work on my PTSD issues. Seems though as of late… I have been losing the battle. I am afraid it is much bigger than I am.
This is a hard thing to admit…. I have always been a very strong
woman. However when I take in account that that I aced the
“Who is at greatest risk for severe stress symptoms?”
portion on this article…… maybe it just proves that I am human.
Unfortunately I also aced the Stress Symtoms section too.

For several months after returning home, I had insurance benefits. After I found myself without them, I had a horrible time trying to find anyone who was willing to see me “without insurance”. After Drs. would find out about the no insurance
issue…. I got the stock reply….” He is not accepting new patients”. I have written countless letters and made countless phone calls…. reaching out for help. All of us who were “there” have always had the burning question:
“Who is going to rescue the Rescuer?”

I am to the point where I do not have it in me to debate…. defend… or to explain much of anything. I guess I am not a “good friend” by many 360 standards. So much of 360 expects lighthearted banter…. regular posting to everyone’s else’s blog. I do understand it, but I just don’t have it in me at this time. For that...I am sorry.
To be quite honest... I am just trying to survive.
“I come in peace with concern...”. Why I mention it, is because nothing
that followed that innocent and caring opening, was about PEACE or CONCERN.
Normally, when I receive these “types” of messages, I post them in their entirety
to my blog. This time, I choose not to post this garbage. It was a waste my
time and I’m sure it would have been a waste of yours too.

It is truly sad how people can shout “PEACE”… but carry so much hatred
in their hearts. I would imagine that opposite of PEACE is Hate, Turmoil and Chaos.
But that’s is just a guess.

I did find parts of it amusing. Like telling me what is best for me… who my friends
should or shouldn’t be… what I should do and shouldn’t do.
WHAAHAHAHAHHAHAH!!!!!!!!!! Anyone who KNOWS me would know
what an absolute waste of air those statement would be, thrown in my direction.

I am my own person! Always have been … Always will be.

It is amusing how people read a little bit of a “blog” and think they know you.
I can most certainly assure you that you have only seen a tiny glimpse of
one element of me.

I can tell you this about me. I live a VERY full and busy life,
both professionally and personally.
I don’t have “extra” time for the causes that I support…
I make the time. Without “service work” my life could become dull and
repetitive. Things that I don’t have time for…. are gossip, hate,
he said/she said scenarios, chaos and turmoil. For it seems
to me, that those qualities would be complete waste my
spirit and who I was intended to be.

How I choose to carry the PEACE message… is through my actions.
You see, I just don’t talk the talk….. I walk the walk.
Anyone who thinks that PEACE is going to occur like some BIG BANG..
should just go pour themselves another drink. Peace will occur,
when we place it in our own hearts and carry the message through
our actions and deeds.

Just so we can be clear about what peace means:

Main Entry: 1peace
Pronunciation: 'pEs
Function: noun
1 : a state of tranquility or quiet: as a : freedom from civil disturbance b : a state of security or order within a community provided for by law or custom <a breach of the peace>
2 : freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions
3 : harmony in personal relations
4 a : a state or period of mutual concord between governments b : a pact or agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war or in a state of enmity
5 -- used interjectionally to ask for silence or calm or as a greeting or farewell

SO… with that…To the one who sent me the message...
I will bid you a “# 2” PEACE and I truly hope
(N3S "2" Hands)

Woke up this morning and my wheels were turning.

I have been completely awestruck at the outpouring of people who
have been more than willing to help with “Doogie” and I
want to thank each and everyone of you again from the bottom
to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.

This reminded me SO much of being an animal rescuer in
Occasionally we would pick up a first name or two, but for

I even met a cancer patient who was still in treatment.
the list goes on and on …. These were the people
“on the ground” after Katrina working hand in hand.

I was telling PK this morning, that the most important people
in the entire animal rescue effort after Katrina were the people that were
behind their computers at home. Had it not been for these people
we could have NEVER done what we did.

Their emails and communications provided us with:
-Communication- to get the word out as to what was really happening
-Supplies (animal crates, animal food, veterinary supplies etc)
- Volunteers ( rescuers, vets, shelter workers, vet techs)
- Places for the animals to be taken to ( personal foster homes,
shelters, sanctuaries; both in the US and in Canada)
-Transport for the thousands of animals that we gathered
-Some volunteered air miles to get some of us to the scene
(and this list goes on and on)

These are the true HEROS in my eyes.

The point of bringing this up??….
It comes back to my wheels turning. ;)

I receive info through the rescuers all over the country, about
animals and situations concerning animals that require action.
(Such as Doogie) SOOOOO…
I decided to create another blog here on 360. DOOGIES.PLACE
That way, we can create a network of very different yet likeminded
people who will be available to jump into action when the needs
arise. Whether it is abuse cases…. of heaven forbid, another

I will not update the page daily but when I do… You make the
decision whether you want to participate or not. If you do…
then you can start spreading the word to other animal lovers.
Just like you did for Doogie!! The more people on the

I certainly don’t want to loose track of you wonderful people…
and together we can make a difference. Whether it be for one
I will probably be doing some POLLS to get a feel for things too.

Also... if you decide that having "parrotcharmer" on your friends list isn't a match...
please don't feel bad about deleting me. It will not upset me. Just as
long as you have added Doogies Place as a friend :) )
Not everybody wants to read such blog posts as "My favorite color is Chrome" ;) LOL!

N.O. Rescuer Arrested for helping a dying chained dog....

(Tammy Grimes is a former New Orleans Rescuer.... She needs our support!! )
Read her story below:

Tammy Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, was arrested September 11, 2006 for helping a dying chained dog named Doogie who could not stand in East Freedom, Pennsylvania. Below are the details of the case, with photo and video documentation.

Tammy's statement: "I made a hard decision; this decision was that I could not have lived with myself or looked myself in the eye if I were such a coward as to leave Doogie lying there dying on the ground for fear of what would happen to me. I see this case as a travesty against justice...the true perpetrators of a crime are the people who left Doogie to lie there dying for three days without doing right by him. I am very saddened that we live in a society where people have to be afraid to do the right thing, to help those in need, whether that need be human or animal. Arrests such as mine are a pitiful statement for America, and I ask all dog lovers to stand with me to insist that all charges against me are dropped and charges of animal cruelty are instead placed against the Arnolds of East Freedom, PA. The Arnolds who left Doogie to die. This video truly speaks for itself, and for Doogie. I did what was morally right; I stand by my decision to help him and will be proud of it until my dying day. No one can take that from me."

Here is the background info:

We got a call from Kim Eicher in East Freedom 9/11/06, crying because Doogie hadn't gotten up since Saturday. She had been calling the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society since Saturday to no avail. We told her we aren't law officers, and she needed to call the Humane Officer. We told her to make sure she left a message, very clearly, about the problem. Then we got another call about the same dog, from another person who passes him every day. At that point we called Kim back to see if she'd heard from the Humane Officer. She had not, was very, very upset and we were very worried about him, so we promised her we'd go out and see what we could do.

When we arrived, we took photos and video of Doogie. We initially thought he was dead, as he was not moving and his back was to us. We found out that the people were not home to talk to about him, so I made the decision that I would not leave him lying there on the cold wet ground for one moment longer, and I would accept all consequences of my decision.

Kim Eicher has agreed to testify as to the animal cruelty perpetrated against Doogie. She cried the whole time we were there, you can hear her on the video.
I think once you see the video and pictures, you'll understand why I made this decision.

The vet documented his general negligent condition, low weight, sores, missing fur, and took xrays of his back and hips. He determined that he has very bad back spurs that are causing him a lot of pain and are most likely responsible for his inability to walk. He also saw an undetermined mass near his hip on the xray. He gave him a shot for pain plus some B vitamins for energy, so that perhaps he could have even one good day or a few good hours. He wrote a letter stating his condition.

As we got to the vet, the CPHS Humane Officer Gotshall was just leaving, and he stopped us. He was about to go out to the residence. When he found out we had Doogie with us, he was not happy. I volunteered to take Doogie back and he could pick him up instead. He refused that, and stated that I should get him the vet care he needed, and to call him afterward on his cell.

When I later called him, he did not answer, I left a message asking him what he wanted me to do with Doogie, he never called back.

Shortly after we got Doogie to my home, situated, bathed—had to, the stench was too bad—and fed and watered an Officer Flaig called from the Freedom Township Police Department (Freedom, isn't that ironic?). He wanted me to return Doogie, which I refused to do. I explained that I had video and photos documenting the animal cruelty, and the neighbor was willing to testify; why didn't he pursue that as they were the perpetrators of the crime, and should be charged? He refused, and was not interested in seeing my evidence.

He and three other police vehicles arrived at my home at approximately 9:30 p.m. As I refused to hand Doogie over to be returned to death on a chain, and would not tell them where he was, I was taken into custody, transported to the East Freedom police office, and charged with theft, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief, and criminal trespass. I was released on $50,000 unsecured bond and ordered to appear at a preliminary hearing September 21, 2006.

I was treated like a common criminal, especially by Chief Reilly, who called me a 'freakin' idiot', 'incompetent', and I overheard him telling Officer Flaig that if I ever came near his dog I would have a slug in my a**. Again, there was no interest in any evidence that the dog had been abused or criminally neglected. As far as they were concerned, the dog's safety or condition was not even an issue.

I was released after seeing Judge Aigner, where Chief Reilly asked that I be not given bail but incarcerated for my failure to cooperate. It was 2:00 a.m., and I had no ride home, over 30 miles away. I had to walk to a local all-night store to call and get a cab, because there was no concern over how I would get home. Their attempt to dehumanize me didn't work. I held my head high and still do. I looked Chief Reilly square in the eye at every opportunity. I will not be broken.

Here's what I need from you all. View the videos and photos. I think you'll agree with me that this is NOT acceptable in ANY way in any kind of civilized society. We cannot allow this kind of animal abuse. Period. Not ifs, ands, or buts. Insist that all charges against Tammy Grimes are dropped and animal cruelty charges are instead filed against the Arnolds of East Freedom, Pennsylvania. Pass along the photos and the video, or a link to it, as much as you possibly can.

The “sales pitch” I received when I saw her for the first time
was “THAT’S A MEAN BIRD”. She had been kept
in a small cage that sat on the floor for over a year. I sat down on the
floor in the store and started talking to her. I didn’t
see mean… so I opened her cage door. The sales rep said
“We can’t be responsible when you get a nasty bite”
Lola dove into my chest and I started laughing.
In return Lola started laughing too. Yep she
was mimicking me.
I “explained” to the shop owner why Lola had been acting nasty…
and started debating the price. Lola never
went back into that tiny cage. In fact
Lola to this day never has a closed door on her cage…
LONG tail feathers, she was humped over on the floor of this box.
It was 2 days before Christmas and Petsmart was VERY crowded.
I got the manager and was LOUDLY explaining her inhumane
treatment to him. I decided that I was NOT leaving before
she was out of that box. They were asking $1800 for her.
I ended up walking out of Petsmart that night with Bella
and about $200 worth of food. I ended up writing them a
check for $400. The management was extremely
anxious to get the LOUD lady out of the store. I had created
quite a large crowd around me. When it was over with…
I actually heard people cheer.
I wrote numerous letters to Petsmart… and as a result
they changed to way they were housing their birds in the stores
in my city. Plus
they NO longer carry birds of this size.
The manager admitted to me that night that no one at the
store knew anything about tropical birds.
It was obvious!
It took many months for Bella’s spine to straighten up.
She is incredibly Sweet and loves to snuggle!
She will let just about anyone hold her.
They tried for many months to still keep them in their flooded out
They started feeling guilty and knew the most unselfish thing
they could do would to be find them a new home.
His parents drove them all the way to Florida to me.
It was so very sad…. These people loved these animals.
They cried and cried and cried!
Skye is feather plucked due to the stress of the Hurricane.
Because these two birds came from a loving home..
I did not change their names.
I told their owners… they could ALWAYS come back for them.
I told her if it was bad… they could come back for him.
She practically RAN out of my house.
Needless to say, Rambo didn’t have any people skills.
It took me 2 years to gain his trust…just to be able to
scratch his head. We worked on it every day.
He came with his name… in fact he showed up at his
previous owners house with his name.
He loves to yell “Hi Rambo!!”
There was never a question who he was. ;)
for their owners. They are from New Orleans.
I believe they will be going home soon!!
I know they will be glad to see their dad!!!!!!

*************************************************************************************************

Here are the main questions I usually get about my birds:

ARE THEY LOUD? Absolutely!! It sounds like a Amazon Rainforest in my house.
I love the sound… a lot of people hear it a noise. I have people ask
me all the time on the phone… “How can you stand that?” Most of the
time I don’t even realize what people are talking about. Seriously… I don’t
even hear it.

ARE THEY MESSY? You better believe it!! All birds are messy! Really messy!
It comes with the territory. One thing you might not know… birds droppings
have no smell. So… parrots don’t stink.

DO THEY BITE? All parrots will bite. However, if one of them bites me,
I know that I have done something stupid. It is always my fault. Either I have
moved to quickly or have jerked my hand in front of them. Your moves
around parrots need to be slower and deliberate. Parrot also sense and react to fear… they will most definitely bite people who are afraid of them.

DO THEY TALK? Some do and some don’t. With mine… most do.
However… don’t ever get a bird with the expectation that it will talk. You need

to be able to love them whether they talk or not. They have MANY other
qualities that endear them… besides speech. Most people have the
impression that ALL African Grey’s talk. I know many that have never
uttered a word. They are still wonderful!

WHERE DO YOU KEEP THEM? For this one, I thought I would show you.
On the other side of the 3 windows used to be a porch. I had it
enclosed for the birds. See they have a great view of everything that is
going on in the house. They like that… because the are VERY social animals.
Here is another view from the living room … facing the kitchen area.
See right under the big clock on the wall… That is Cricky’s cage. She likes being
right next to the kitchen. She would be VERY upset if I were to move her cage.
She is not social with the other birds at all…. she would rather be looking at me!
(right front of picture)… She is obviously just visiting Poppy’s cage!!
The all to check out each others cages. That is Rambo to the left,
Chiku right next to him. Bella’s cage is on the back wall…
That is Gracie on the right behind Lola. I have large branches
that hang by cotton rope from the ceiling. They LOVE to climb all over the place!
They also have their own radio and many of them like to dance.
This picture only shows about half of the room. There is two sliding doors and
a window in this room. I have a fan in the window that blows OUT. It keeps
dander down in the room. The floor is covered in Blue Tarps… it is very easy
to keep clean. Trust me… I have tried everything. The blue tarp works out the best!

Seems the wheels of justice may be starting to roll in
the St Bernard's Parrish Massacre.
Today in the LA Times it was announced that the owners of
the animals: dogs, cats and birds.. that were massacred
by the St Bernard's Parrish Police, are going to be able to sue.
There has to been some sort of accountability in this horrific
massacre that occurred in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
( St Bernard's Parrish sits right next to Orleans Parrish)

This is the letter I received today from Pasado's Safe Haven:

Dear ......... Please forgive me for invading your inbox, but there is
good news to announce in the St. Bernard Pet Massacre.

In case you need background:
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, while Pasado's Safe Haven was
in New Orleans rescuing 1200 animals, our lead investigator (Mark
Steinway) got a call about three schools, in St. Bernard Parish,
where hurricane evacuees had temporarily lived. They were forced to
leave all of their pets behind - dogs tied up on leashes, cats in
carriers.

The call Mark received reported all the animals - 33 dogs and cats,
had been shot to death. We called the Louisiana State Attorney
General's Office. Investigators joined Mark at the schools. We went
to the local Wal-Mart and bought 33 Rubbermaid tubs, in which to
scoop up the remains of the bodies for forensic investigation. We
returned to the schools, and under the watchful eyes of the AG's
Office Investigators, recovered all the bodies, shell casings and
other evidence. It was found that the dogs had been shot in the body
cavity, neck, joints, and legs, creating prolonged suffering for them.

We drove all of the remains, which had literally melted into the
floors in the heat, to the State of Louisiana's Veterinary Teaching
Hospital for necropsies. Pasado's Safe Haven paid for $7700.00 for
necropsies to prove the animals suffered. The Louisiana State
Attorney General launched an investigation but so far, nothing has
come of it. Go to www.pasadosafehaven.org for history.

GREAT NEWS ANNOUNCED TODAY!
As we've patiently waited for the wheels of justice to turn in a
criminal case, Pasado's has been delighted to work with a passionate
attorney in New Orleans to see this case through as a civil matter on
behalf of the people whose pets were killed. Today's Los Angeles
Times article describes the civil suit that we're supporting with
time, investigation, interviews with witnesses, the necropsy reports
and one of our staff members (a paralegal) and all filing fees to
bring this case to court. Eileen Comiskey, the brilliant New Orleans
attorney, is leading the efforts on behalf of plaintiffs. Many
people, including Jennifer Bishton, Marilyn McGee, and many others
are doing so much foot-work to assist. Our deepest gratitude to ALL
who are making this happen!

PLEASE NOTE!
Pasado's Safe Haven is attempting to help the attorney in this case
and we are a small non-profit. The attorney is donating hundreds of
her hours.
We need filing fees, fees for depositions, airmiles, and pre-paid
long-distance phone cards. Can you help? Please donate here:

And please cross-post to friends who can help. We need those who
committed this horrible act to pay.

For all of the animals who died, and their guardians who mourn for
them, thank you!!!!

Owners to Sue Over Katrina Pet Shootings

More than 30 animals left at three schools were later found dead. The evacuees blame deputies.

NEW ORLEANS — John Bozes still pines for Angel Girl, the black Labrador retriever he called his baby. The dog was among more than 30 canines found dead at three schools in St. Bernard Parish after Hurricane Katrina.

Bozes is one of several pet owners who believe that deputies from the parish Sheriff's Office slaughtered their animals. And now they plan to sue.

"I want the families of those officers that did this to suffer the way I did," said Bozes, a former resident of the parish who now lives in Brookhaven, Miss. "I want them tortured the way those poor animals were…. And I'm going to make sure justice is served."

Attorney Eileen Comiskey said Bozes and other pet owners left their animals at area schools when they were forced to evacuate temporary shelters after Katrina hit Aug. 29. Floodwaters inundated all but a few dozen of the parish's buildings.
Thirty-three dogs and two cats were later found dead at Beauregard Middle School, St. Bernard High School, and Sebastien Roy Elementary School. At least a third of the dogs appeared to have been shot, Comiskey said.

The suit that Comiskey plans to file in civil district court Monday will name as defendants Sheriff Jack A. Stephens, at least one deputy and a sergeant, she said. It will charge destruction of property and failure to safeguard property as an authorized custodian of the animals; the intentional infliction of emotional distress; and negligent hiring, training and supervision by the sheriff's office.

Col. Richard Baumy, a spokesman for the Sheriff's Office, would not comment on the claims. But shortly after the incident last year, Baumy was quoted as saying: "As far as the information we have now, our deputies did not shoot the dogs."

He said the investigation was taken over by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and state Atty. Gen. Charles C. Foti Jr.

The suit against the sheriff and his officers is being built on tips from pet owners, investigations by a Washington state-based animal welfare group and research by other local animal activists, Comiskey said.

At least four pet owners would be named as plaintiffs in the suit, Comiskey said, but it is possible several others would be added, and not just residents who had pets at the schools, the lawyer said. "These are people who care about their animals, and they were counting on law enforcement to do the right thing, and they didn't do the right thing," said Susan Michaels, co-founder of Pasado's Safe Haven in Sultan, Wash., which is funding the lawsuit.

Wildlife and Fisheries officials confirmed that agents had come across the animal deaths, and that there was evidence that some dogs had been shot. A spokeswoman with the attorney general's office confirmed a "formal investigation" but did not elaborate.

Pet owners and animal rights activists said they were frustrated at the slow pace of the state's inquiry, and believed there had been foot-dragging in the case because it involves animals and not people.

Bozes said his brother-in-law left Angel Girl tied up on the second floor of Beauregard Middle School with three other family pets.

They included a Siberian husky-German shepherd mix that belonged to Bozes' sister Carol Ann Hamm, a lead plaintiff in the suit; her mother-in-law's Chihuahua-dachshund mix; and a red-nosed pit bull puppy that belonged to Hamm's son.

The animals were left with food and water, and there were several other pets around, Bozes said. The family took shelter at St. Bernard School. Law enforcement officials prevented them from retrieving their pets from Beauregard the next day before they were evacuated, Bozes said.

Forced to abandon their animals, owners wrote messages on the walls and chalkboards in the rooms where their pets were kept, to help potential rescuers to identify them and their owners.

Some owners pleaded "please save them." Others, like Bozes, begged that their pets not be shot. "These people knew their animals were in danger," said Mark Steinway, Pasado's co-founder and an investigator for the shelter.

Sheriff's deputies said last year that some dogs had been shot on the street after the hurricane because they were vicious. Animal activists said this did not describe the dogs at the schools because their owners left food and water, and, in some instances, had tied them up.

Comiskey said witnesses overheard sheriff's deputies talking among themselves just before the owners were evacuated, asking whether the owners were aware their pet were going to be killed.

In late September, Marilyn McGee, a local volunteer animal rescuer, was in search of a service dog that had reportedly been left at Beauregard by its hearing-impaired owner. She and her husband discovered a grisly scene on the school's second floor.

McGee also went to Sebastien Roy Elementary, where she said at least five dead dogs were found. Four appeared to have been shot. She took photographs and went to the authorities.

Officials at Pasado's, which had launched an animal rescue mission in the New Orleans area shortly after Katrina, said they received an e-mail from a resident about the animal slayings at the St. Bernard schools.

Steinway said that in early October, three investigators from the Louisiana attorney general's office accompanied him to Beauregard, where most of the pets were allegedly killed. Spent shell casings from a variety of guns, including a shotgun and 9mm handgun, consistent with those used by law enforcement officials, were scattered across the floor.

Identifying the animals' remains was difficult, but many still had ID collars or other distinguishing features. One poodle was recognizable from its red painted nails, Steinway said.

Pasado's officials say the animal sanctuary is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest, prosecution and conviction of those responsible, Michaels said. So far, no one has responded.

Bozes and Hamm learned of the death of their dogs through television news reports. They recognized the animals' collars.

"Never a day goes by when I don't think, 'Why?' I want to know why they did this," said Hamm from her new home in Texas. "I want to see justice done and face the person who did this to my animal."
