One person described it as a mixture of Mash and Multiply and that’s not particularly new or innovative. When I was reading about Ari Balogh’s recent comments, I was picture a lot more than what 360 Plus appears to be. By the way, the name is simply a horrible choice. Maybe 360 is a good brand name in Asia, but you’ll need to pick something different in the U.S. Can you imagine if Ford decided to make a car called the Pinto II or the Edsel II? The same goes for a name like 360 Plus."

Mr. Warburton's reply:

"Hi Carl,
360+ is not the new profile.

Due to some less than articulate comments in a recent CNN article and other sources, some of you are under the mistaken impression that 360 has already closed. I would say that 360 is alive and well, but that would only be half true. 360 is on life support while Yahoo tries to roll out the Universal Profile System. We've been told for months Yahoo would no longer fix bugs on 360 and this has lead to vastly different user experiences. However, most of us can still blog and get blog comments and that is proof enough that it hasn't closed...yet.

You need not look any further that the most recent 360 team blog about the Universal Profile System. The new system will have a blog that will preserve our blog entries and blog comments.

Many of you have taken notice of the article on Techcrunch that discusses a presentation at the recent Web 2.0 Conference by Yahoo's Chief Technology officer, Ari Balogh, about the "rewiring" of Yahoo. He even discusses elements of the new profile system.

His comments did not reveal much new information and to a certain degree, most of what he said has been discussed in this page. Yahoo is putting together a single profile to connect all of its various services more easily. Yahoo's free email system will play a big role in making connections to friends that much easier.

In January 2008, Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang discussed a new mobile platform that Yahoo would be rolling out this year. Much of what he said was similar to the more recent comments at the Web 2.0 conference. The bottom line is that Yahoo is continuing to work on the new profile system at 360 is not close. We do not know when the new profile system will be out We don't know if it would be enough for Yahoo to fight off Microsoft. We do know that the Mash team has not updated its blog since January. i think this means we will hear something soon, but we will pass along information as soon as we have it. But no, 360 isn't closed just yet.

Officially, I'm disappointed in Yahoo.

There are a lot of people now raising a last-ditch effort to get Yahoo's attention to save Y/360 (you've probably seen the wallpaper; "I Want My 360!"). These folks are as we were in October; passionate about saving what was to us the ideal social-networking site; one which was heavy on the writing and interpersonal communication, and light on the shiny-things (videos, sparklies, and other dreck).

Multiply gave most of us a place to land, but not to continue. The 'feel' is different -- it's not that cerebral, and the interface doesn't lend itself to making a blog or other writing the centerpoint of things.

I know this is true in my own case, and I've heard it from others, also - the writing isn't the message on other sites; it's just not there.

Recently, I joined a Multiply 'group' which had been founded to promote some of the kind of writing I like to do. I posted one of my series' there (on 360, last July, it received over 100 comments).

Not one on Multiply.

While my Multiply 'friends' are more cerebral than most, for whatever reason, there's just not the sense of community. Plug-in modules don't lend themselves to promoting a blog.

Yahoo 'responded' with Mash - which they've told us was experimental, and if recent commentary and user-hits are any indication, is now all but dead.

They've given us "Shine" (a site for women, which as one of its inagural articles 'treated' us to a primer on how-to-prey-on-teenage-boys - if one happens to be an older woman).

They've given us MyBlogLog - which is a nice idea, but isn't a replacement for 360.

They've given us promises - plenty of those - regarding the Universal Profile System, which was supposed to be up and running no later than the end of first quarter.

Unfortunately, none of these has come anywhere near close to replacing 360.

360 is a broken machine. We all know that, and it's sad. But we're not getting anything from Yahoo; they're not interested in us die-hards, because there just Aren't That Many Of Us left.

Whither now?

Many have quit blogging altogether. I've cut back my own writing, partially in response to Real Life, and partially because the 'feel' on any of the other sites just isn't the same.

I've been a supporter of Yahoo through my entire time as a 'feature'. After a point, however, one begins to look a tad ridiculous; the playground is empty, and I feel like the kid in the Rockwell painting - the one who's holding a bat, a ball, and a mitt - and the field is empty, with no one to play.

--"Astra"

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Yahoo and Time Warner Inc.'s AOL are closing in on a deal to combine their Internet operations. AOL owns a social networking site called Bebo, which it purchased in March for $850 million. There are still plenty of details to work out according to the published reports, but this could be interesting.

I totally did not see this coming. Yahoo must be more serious that I thought about staying away from Microsoft.

Do any of you remember Yahoo's famous Peanut Butter Manifesto? It was written on November 2006 by Brad Garlinghouse, a Yahoo senior vice president. Some of the criticisms he made of Yahoo include the following: (1) "We lack a focused, cohesive vision for our company"; (2) "We lack clarity of ownership and accountability; and (3) "We lack decisiveness". He want on to specifically criticize Yahoo for have a number of overlapping services:

• YME vs. Musicmatch

• Flickr vs. Photos

• YMG video vs. Search video

• Deli.cio.us vs. myweb

• Messenger and plug-ins vs. Sidebar and widgets

• Social media vs. 360 and Groups

• Front page vs. YMG

• Global strategy from BU'vs. Global strategy from Int'l

So has Yahoo learned anything from Mr. Garlinghouse? Well, let's put it this way. Yahoo now had 3 different video hosting services: (1) the original Yahoo! Video (think YouTube); (2) JumpCut (think YouTube + video editing); and (3) Flickr Video (photos & short videos in the same place).

Scooby Doo is still in the house...lots of movement, but no traction.
