The History of Black History

Dr. Carter G. Woodson

Americans have recognized black history annually since 1926, first as "Negro History Week" and later as "Black History Month " What you might not know is that black history had barely begun to be studied—or even documented—when the tradition originated. Although blacks have been in America at least as far back as colonial times, it was not until the 20th century that they gained a respectable presence in the history books.

Blacks Absent from History Books

We owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Born to parents who were former slaves, he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age twenty. He graduated within two years and later went on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard. The scholar was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black American population—and when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time.

Established Journal of Negro History

Woodson, always one to act on his ambitions, decided to take on the challenge of writing black Americans into the nation's history. He established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now called the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History) in 1915, and a year later founded the widely respected Journal of Negro History. In 1926, he launched Negro History Week as an initiative to bring national attention to the contributions of black people throughout American history.

Woodson chose the second week of February for Negro History Week because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly influenced the black American population, Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. However, February has much more than Douglass and Lincoln to show for its significance in black American history. For example:

February 23, 1868:
W. E. B. DuBois, important civil rights leader and co-founder of the NAACP, was born.
February 3, 1870:
The 15th Amendment was passed, granting blacks the right to vote.
February 25, 1870:
The first black U.S. senator, Hiram R. Revels (1822-1901), took his oath of office.
February 12, 1909:
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded by a group of concerned black and white citizens in New York City.
February 1, 1960:
In what would become a civil-rights movement milestone, a group of black Greensboro, N.C., college students began a sit-in at a segregated Woolworth's lunch counter.
February 21, 1965:
Malcolm X, the militant leader who promoted Black Nationalism, was shot to death by three Black Muslims.

Local elected official: John Mercer Langston, 1855, town clerk of Brownhelm Township, Ohio.
State elected official: Alexander Lucius Twilight, 1836, the Vermont legislature.
Mayor of major city: Carl Stokes, Cleveland, Ohio, 1967–1971. The first black woman to serve as a mayor of a major U.S. city was Sharon Pratt Dixon Kelly, Washington, DC, 1991–1995.
Governor (appointed): P.B.S. Pinchback served as governor of Louisiana from Dec. 9, 1872–Jan. 13, 1873, during impeachment proceedings against the elected governor.
Governor (elected): L. Douglas Wilder, Virginia, 1990–1994.
U.S. Representative: Joseph Rainey became a Congressman from South Carolina in 1870 and was reelected four more times. The first black female U.S. Representative was Shirley Chisholm, Congresswoman from New York, 1969–1983.

U.S. cabinet member: Robert C. Weaver, 1966–1968, Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development under Lyndon Johnson; the first black female cabinet minister was Patricia Harris, 1977, Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development under Jimmy Carter.
U.S. Secretary of State: Gen. Colin Powell, 2001–2004. The first black female Secretary of State was Condoleezza Rice, 2005—.

African-American Firsts: Law

Editor, Harvard Law Review: Charles Hamilton Houston, 1919. Barack Obama became the first President of the Harvard Law Review.
Federal Judge: William Henry Hastie, 1946; Constance Baker Motley became the first black woman federal judge, 1966.
U.S. Supreme Court Justice: Thurgood Marshall, 1967–1991. Clarence Thomas became the second African American to serve on the Court in 1991.

African-American Firsts: Diplomacy

U.S. diplomat: Ebenezer D. Bassett, 1869, became minister-resident to Haiti; Patricia Harris became the first black female ambassador (1965; Luxembourg).
U.S. Representative to the UN: Andrew Young (1977–1979).
Nobel Peace Prize winner: Ralph J. Bunche received the prize in 1950 for mediating the Arab-Israeli truce. Martin Luther King, Jr., became the second African-American Peace Prize winner in 1964. (See King's Nobel acceptance speech.)

African-American Firsts: Military

Combat pilot: Georgia-born Eugene Jacques Ballard, 1917, denied entry into the U.S. Army Air Corps because of his race, served throughout World War I in the French Flying Corps. He received the Legion of Honor, France's highest honor, among many other decorations.
First Congressional Medal of Honor winner: Sgt. William H. Carney for bravery during the Civil War. He received his Congressional Medal of Honor in 1900.
General: Benjamin O. Davis, Sr., 1940–1948.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff: Colin Powell, 1989–1993.

African-American Firsts: Science and Medicine

First patent holder: Thomas L. Jennings, 1821, for a dry-cleaning process. Sarah E. Goode, 1885, became the first African-American woman to receive a patent, for a bed that folded up into a cabinet.
M.D. degree: James McCune Smith, 1837, University of Glasgow; Rebecca Lee Crumpler became the first black woman to receive an M.D. degree. She graduated from the New England Female Medical College in 1864.
Inventor of the blood bank: Dr. Charles Drew, 1940.
Successful open heart surgery: Daniel Hale Williams, 1893.
First astronaut: Robert H. Lawrence, Jr., 1967, was the first black astronaut, but he died in a plane crash during a training flight and never made it into space. Guion Bluford, 1983, became the first black astronaut to travel in space; Mae Jemison, 1992, became the first black female astronaut. Frederick D. Gregory, 1998, was the first African-American shuttle commander.

Miss America: Vanessa Williams, 1984, representing New York. When controversial photos surfaced and Williams resigned, Suzette Charles, the runner-up and also an African American, assumed the title. She represented New Jersey. Three additional African Americans have been Miss Americas: Debbye Turner (1990), Marjorie Vincent (1991), and Kimberly Aiken (1994).

I Called It A Poetic Apology (If You Will), And I Felt Compelled To Share It With You, My 360 Fam. But You Must Really Have An Open Mind To Receive it... Please Let Me now That YOU Think...

Many nations defiled their consciences engaging in the slave trade
None more guilty than my own

The “Land of the free”
Would never have been “economically viable”
Without the labor of kidnapped souls
Ripped from their homes and from the hearts of their loved ones

A country built
On on the backs, blood and bludgeoned bodies of slaves

The founders knew it was wrong
“We hold these truths to be self evident” they said
And intended
In time
To see slavery abolished
But only after the fledgling nation
Was out of fiscal danger
Something abolition would seriously threaten
And stall

Thus,
In 1857
Nearly one hundred years later
Chief Justice Roger B. Taney wrote
While referring to the phrase
"All men are created equal"
"It is too clear for dispute
That the enslaved African race
Were not intended to be included,
And formed no part of the people
Who framed and adopted this declaration"

Slaves were declared to be property

Dred Scott and his wife knew it
Abolitionists knew it
You and I know it
All people with conscience know it
No human being was created to be the property of another
No human being may be lawfully kidnapped
Enslaved
Raped
Beaten
And forced to serve

But millions allowed it
Fought for it
Believed in it
Saw it as a “fiscal necessity”
While perhaps
“Personally”
Feeling it was wrong

From my heart
More broken than I can ever express
And eyes blurred with tears
I ask my brethren of African decent
To forgive what our fathers did
What we did
As a nation
To you
And your fathers
And your families
And the wrongs that have continued as a result of those evils
Up to this very day

Many whites find it hard to understand
Why names like Frederick Douglass
Harriet Tubman
Marcus Garvey
Martin Luther King Jr.
And so many others
Are precious and highly esteemed in “negro” hearts

But ask those whose ancestors came here in slave ships
Bodies stacked in heaps and chains
Piled high under the decks where their captors freely walked
The stench of vomit, excrement, urine and decaying flesh
Polluting each breath that was taken below
By those still able to breathe
Who survived their trip
To the “New World”
And to the “Land of Liberty”

They can tell you why their “heroes”
While seeming eccentric and militant to some
Are admired and adored
For they spoke to the needs of a race
Who are still fighting for equality
And civil rights
And human rights
Here in the place we call home

Some carelessly chant the mantras
“That was long ago”
“It’s time ‘they’ get over it”
“I was not to blame”
But each time we are silent
To the horrors of slavery
We curse ourselves
Whether it be the un-confessed deeds of the past...

(For which our nation can publicly repent and ask for forgiveness in hope of true reconciliation and blessing)

...Or the nightmarish practices of the present
Where a diamond buying public turns a deaf ear
To the wailing screams of children
Arms freshly hacked off as “preventative” warnings
To any thought of stealing the stones
Which their families
Are enslaved to mine

Our silence only allows such wickedness to remain

Who can honestly say it was “long ago”
When it took the images of fire hosed children
And young people mauled by police dogs
To coerce a nation into acknowledging
That, yes, a “problem existed”
With regard to “civil rights”

Our fathers committed these evils
And the people who inhabit our planet
Continue to perpetuate these wrongs

May our hearts break
Until by our deeds
As well as by our words
Our brethren of African decent can see
And believe
That the repentance our nation feels for these horrific sins
Is real
And we can
With a clear conscience
Non violently work together for the common good...

Nameless thousands have resisted even unto death for the liberation of African people, beginning on the shores of the Mother continent itself and continuing through the Middle Passage, Slavery, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights Struggle, the Black Liberation Struggle, and the struggles of today. The fact that the names of many of those individuals are not known does not reduce the significance of their contribution to the struggle for Black Liberation. This compilation is an attempt to recognize and pay homage to those individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice for the liberation of Black/African people and should not be looked upon as discrediting the thousands, perhaps even millions of others that have also struggled for true freedom, justice, and equality. Our generation must now accept the torch that has been passed to us to guarantee our existence and our children's future. The Struggle Continues!

Zumbi dos Palmares (1655 - 1695)
Killed on November 20, 1695, in an ambush by Portuguese soldiers while conducting a guerilla campaign to maintain the independence of the Quilombo known as Palmares located in modern day Brazil. He was post-humously decapitated and his head impaled and placed on public display.

Camuanga dos Palmares (? - 1704)
Killed by Portuguese soldiers while leading a guerilla campaign to re-establish the independence of the Palmares Quilombo.

Gabriel Prosser (? - 1800)
Executed: October 7, 1800 by state of Virginia for plotting slave insurrection in Norfolk County.

Toussaint L'Ouverture (1743 - 1803)
Died due to complications related to imprisonment in a cold, mountain cell in France.

Denmark Vesey (1767 - 1822)
Executed: July 2, 1822 by state of South Carolina along with 34 other Blacks for plotting slave insurrection in Charleston.

Assassinated: October 17, 1806 while functioning as the Revolutionary leader of Haiti.

Marcus Garvey is one of two individuals included on this list whose life, as far as can be determined, did not end as a direct result of involvement in the liberation struggle, however, he is considered a martyr by this author because the impact he made internationally had the direct result of his imprisonment, deportation, and the inability to bring his movement to its logical conclusion due of his forced isolation which contributed greatly to his demise.

Elijah Muhammad this Brother more so than any others instilled a sense of pride, dignity and respect among the lost and found Brothers and Sisters in amerikkka, and who society had totally given up on, what this master teacher taught was do for self, build your own and his program gave backbone to many Brothers and Sisters

John Brown is the only non-African person included in this compilation. The author is aware that some controversy exists surrounding the motivations behind Brown's actions, but feels that his goal of liberation for the slaves was sincere and that his actions were based on just principles. John Brown truly embodied the spirit of freedom loving African people around the world.
