ANDERSON, Ind. -- Police said a man put an 18-month old boy in a stroller and walked him around the neighborhood Tuesday after critically injuring the toddler by shaking him.

ELLETTSVILLE - A 1-year-old child who nearly drowned in a bathtub has been released from an Indianapolis hospital.

The mother of the girl said today her child is at home again and is doing fine.

Ellettsville police responded to the 400 block of Poplar Drive Monday evening. The mother told police she had left the water running in the tub while the child was in bed. She believed her 2-year-old child, who was in the tub, may have taken the younger child out of her toddler bed and put her in the tub.

The child was taken to Bloomington Hospital and later transferred by helicopter to Riley. According to the child’s grandmother, the little girl is doing great and was released Wednesday.

The grandmother, Laurie Sylvester, said by e-mail that she and her husband performed CPR on the child before emergency personnel arrived.

ELLETTSVILLE — A 1-year-old girl nearly drowned Monday in a bathtub full of water.

According to a report released Wednesday by Ellettsville deputy marshal Eric S. Chaudion, police and emergency responders were called to the 400 block of Poplar Drive around 9 p.m. Monday. When the first officer arrived, he found someone performing CPR on the child. Chaudion said he could hear shallow breathing coming from the child and noticed air bubbles coming from her nose. He tilted her head back to keep the airway clear as he waited for the ambulance.

When other emergency responders arrived, they took her by ambulance to the Bloomington Hospital. In a move similar to the ambulance run for Monday’s drowning victim at Paynetown, Bloomington and Monroe County police blocked intersections in an effort to expedite the trip to the hospital.

Chaudion interviewed the child’s mother, who said she had started the bathtub when the phone rang. She said the child was in bed at the time. Upon completing the call, she returned to find the tub water was high, but she was unable to turn off the water. She said she went to get pliers to turn it off, and the phone rang again. When she returned to the bathroom, she found the girl lying in the water in the tub, according to the report.

The child was later taken by helicopter to a Clarian Hospital in Indianapolis for observation. The case has been reported to Child Protective Services for review, the police report said.

Let's not be too quick to judge this mother since the story didn't give us all of the facts. We're inclined to believe that she was negligent due to lack of details in the story. However, with some details left out of the story, we have no idea what truly happened. Perhaps the bath was for herself and the baby was sleeping with the mother not realizing the baby got out of the crib. It could have been anything, and until we get all of the facts we should not be judge, jury and executioner.

I don't think it matters on the mothers age. I am a young mother and have a 1 year old that can climb in and out of the bath tub and I would never leave him in there by himself.

I am glad she was reported to CPS. Doesn't every parent know that you're not supposed to leave a child unattended in the bathtub? That goes DOUBLE for a child as young as 1 year old. Geez! A prime example of why some people should not be allowed to have children!!

Motherofthreeboys -- the article didn't say she left the child in the bathtub. This point was already addressed earlier in these comments. The article only states that she went to retrive pliers and when she returned to the tub, she found the child. Let's not jump to conclusions about what kind of parent she is until more facts come out about this situation. The report we've all read only leaves it up to individual speculation as to what might have happened. Nobody knows where the mother last left the child when she began to run the bath water.

observer, point well taken, but I don't know that most people have condemned her. Most are just saying the circumstances are clearly suspicious and should be investigated further.

I agree, suspicious. I also have some doubts about how it played out. My post was mostly directed at those who are saying the mother is an idiot for leaving the baby in the bathtub -- just that I've seen a couple of people jump to conclusions or be quick to post that she did something that wasn't actually stated in the news story.

These people have been in trouble with CPS more than once. They just got the children back a few months ago from another case CPS was working on with them. The police know them very well.... Maybe someone ought to require mommy and daddy to do a drug test this time before they just hand the kids back to them. These "don't want to be" parents honestly don't deserve these children and that is a fact!!!!!!

The police are always responding to this address. I really hope CPS does somthing for the sake of these two little girls. There are always people going in and out of this house. And it seems this woman and her husband all always fighting. Screaming,yelling going on all the time. it seems she does this stuff to get his attention.They have been investigated before. Please, Please CPS do save these poor children before somthing drastic happens
