Given the magnitude of Yahoo! groups in India, the Mumbai team decided to conduct a similar event albeit on a larger scale – to generate interest in the moderators as we conducted this event for the first time in India.
Saturday morning, July 28 saw a heavy spell of rains in Mumbai city. And yet, the sprightly team at Yahoo! Mumbai was gung-ho about the event they had organized. While the city was sodden in the downpour, the Communications & Community Products team, spearheaded by director Mr. IM Swaminathan, was busy putting their act together for the Moderators Union 2007, Mumbai chapter.
Twenty-five moderators were invited for this event at one of Mumbai’s finest hotels – The Leela Kempinski. These moderators – the crème de la crème of Yahoo! Groups, were short-listed from thousands of registrants from all over India. Each moderator was greeted with a Yahoo! goody bag, but something more exciting awaited them in The Leela ballroom.
Without delay, the event kicked off at 9 a.m. In a welcome address, the moderators met the Yahoo! team for the very first time. They were first run through the agenda and the purpose of the meet – which was to resolve queries and issues related to Yahoo! Groups. They were also informed about the parallel US event that takes place at the Yahoo! headquarters annually. And then, they were in for a pleasant surprise! Even before the media can get its hand on it, the moderators were given a sneak-peek of the brilliant new version of Yahoo! Groups.
In the next segment, the moderators were urged to share their feedback on Yahoo! Groups. An enthusiastic lot, the moderators were very vocal about their opinions, and gave every suggestion possible to better their beloved Yahoo! Groups. But there was one special group that had something more to say! Mumbai Hang Out – one of the biggest Yahoo! groups in India, having a whopping membership of 224,000 members, came forward to voice its opinion. The moderators of Mumbai Hang Out made a presentation, giving tips and management ideas to other moderators present at the event. After a tea break, the Yahoo! team got down to one-on-one discussions with moderators to better understand their issues and propositions. If that wasn’t enough, there was more fun awaiting the attendees. Moderators managed to pick a lot of prizes in a spot-quiz on Yahoo! Groups. A generous spread of steaming delicacies was served for the lunch session that followed. All in all, the event was enjoyed by one and all!

There are more than 7 million Yahoo! groups worldwide. Many of these groups have been created by people who make us proud – ranging from educationalist, humanitarians, and doctors. A group of these likes abodes in the heart of India, PESIIAPS (the Paediatric Endosurgery Administration group).
So when Yahoo! India announced its event Moderators Union 2007, the owner of IAPS group, Dr. Rasik Shah, registered himself promptly. At the event, he gave an inspiring testimonial about his Yahoo! Group. He said that 50% of all paediatric surgeons in India are subscribed members of his group. They use their Yahoo! Group to share unique medical cases and medical advice; thus the group is a great knowledge-sharing platform. He went ahead to say that the group brings together doctors from all parts of India, making communication more streamlined and simpler between them. Dr. Shah uses his Yahoo! group to the fullest, and he shared the benefits of owning a Yahoo! group with all the moderators present at the event.
Finally, he asserted that his Yahoo! group has brought him great recognition and visibility, especially amongst others belonging to his profession. Being a moderator of a Yahoo! Group does not only mean a great deal of responsibility. It also means power and fame! With the Moderators Union testimonials session coming to an end, all the moderators nodded in agreement with Dr. Rasik Shah.
