After over 50 companies applied, over 20 companies replied for interviews, exams etc and over Php 5,000 spent, I am still jobless and stressed out that good jobs are filled up. Despite this (or perhaps because of it), I compiled my thoughts that I think will be beneficial not only to me but for all those job seekers out there rubbing elbows with their enemies for the job and desperately seek the attention of employers to hire them. And I give you the following advice and observation to find a place in the corporate world:
Don't count your eggs before it is hatched - Don't expect anything or everything on a company. and most especially don't love a company because it will never love you back. Don't forget at the end of the day, it's all business.
What happened to me is that I expect so much on certain companies, to the point that I am confident that I'll be hired by them. also, I daydreamed sometimes how will I look like or what should I do in case I'll be hired by them only to be disappointed that I was not hired and obviously, it breaks my heart.
Beware! The companies are alive! - Be very careful of should I say, substandard or let's just say ugly companies. I have many experience with these type of companies only to think that with my experience of being turned down by big or multinational or beautiful companies, my conscience told me that I belong to these type of companies which I constantly try to forget because it makes my spirits low.
In this case I'll tell you 2 experiences of mine regarding with these companies. First, a certain company that starts with a V, hold its office on a rather rundown building in ortigas, the building looks old, I estimated that it is one of the first buildings built on ortigas, it has a korean store similar to the set-up of 24 hour convenience store and a mini-stop beside the entrance of the building on the ground floor of course. To cut the story short, the office looks BAD, it's very dark judging that they turned off the light, not an ambient environment, looks like a call center but not judging by the many people working on that place with old computers and it really looks like that you are working on an Internet café but sadly, some internet cafés look more beautiful than this office.
The environment is not conducive to me to work with and it makes me more stressed if ever I'll work there. What makes the company worst is this story: The interviewer told me if I'm familiar with adult websites, well I asked the interviewer 3 times If I heard that right in the end she said that I'f I'm familiar with porn sites. yes you heard it right, PORN sites. She said that if it's ok with me If ever I'll work on that kind of projects because some of their clients requested them to do this. Many people maybe want to work on this and envy me (hehehe) but I told the interviewer a rather insignificant yes to shut her up or maybe because to grant her respect. She adds that I shouldn't worry because it will be deleted right away anyway once the project is done and uploaded on the server. It's great she told me right away because she said that I might be shocked when I worked on it. Well after that incident, I promised to myself I will never ever go back to that place ever again. The past few days I received some text from them for an additional interview well as expected I never replied to them. Maybe I'll worked there if it's the end of the world and they're the only company wants to accept me with open arms.
And lastly, another horror experience. A company that calls themselve a call center that sounds like a dance and familiar to many filipinos if ever politicians wants to change the constitution. They are based in makati and their building, as expected, looks like that is built during the late 80's or early 90's. When you enter the building you will encounter unfriendly guards, and with my story, told me additional instructions on how will I go to that office. It was confusing alright, but I pretended that I've heard it just to shut them up apparently, the office is on the top floor of the building. The lobby of the building looks ok but below average of other modern buildings. for once I breathlessly said "cool" not expecting of what will I see upstairs. When I'm on the top floor I was confused where will I go, the office location is obviously not there. I was looking for a particular room 2206 (22 being the 22nd floor), I look upstairs but I embarassed myself that I have gone to the wrong office and kept apologizing to an officer of that office well fortunately she gave me instructions on how to get there. Then I remembered what the guards had told me, take the fire exit go up with those very confusing stairs which you don't know where it will lead you too, then I saw the room number then I saw a gym which the guards told me about earlier. When I'm trying to find where will I go in this area, I said to myself that it looks like a scene of Alias or 24 in which I go to a secret area expect that I'll find something illegal or I will meet someone so that no one will find me that I was there or I met with a certain person. Well with these TV shows it excites me more but like what a batch mate who had gone there said, the place looks like that you'll be raped. Then at the very long last I found the office, it is very dark obviously they turned of the lights. The place looks like it is illegally set-up or temporarily set-up. Imagine TV shows like alias or 24 or like the one in Miss congeniality in which they set up temporarily on a room with all those gadgets to catch bad guys or spy on something. what made the palce worst is a small nipa hut set-up inside which is way out of place and doesn;t do any good in my humble opinion and of course it has computers set-up similar to rundown and substandard internet cafés. The interviewer interviewed me on the hallway which looks like a broom cupboard. To give you an idea how it went, imagine the scene in Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire in which Harry Potter is interviewed by Rita skeeter.
After the interview I was interviewed again by the owner which is a foreigner. I don't know the nationality but with his accent, he's probably an american or an australian w/o the famous australian accent. His office looks like a place where online sex takes place with his net cam set-up because of a blue cloth placed on the wall (as a background). I was hired right away and added that I'll go there whenever I'll be available or want to work. Well for me, I'll never ever go to that place ever again and I have no intention to contact them that I will not work there anymore and besides the owner didn't gave me details on the salary so no harm done.
Go with the flow, stick to the topic - During interview, it is important to remain calm and think what you have to say. It is ok to pause for a while to think your answers rather than telling them rubbish and occasional uhhhh, uhmmm and aaahs or errrs. On a particalar company in export bank plaza, the reason I was not accepted is that I spoke tagalaog because I panicked on what will I answer. It is ubelievable for me especially that I like to speak in english all the time (as many classmates and friends know). I regret that I speak that way because I wasn't accepted but on the bright side at least I have chance to choose other companies that I can enjoy when I work.
Fastest fingers first - When taking an exam, answer first the parts where the procter told you is important or essential. and the most important is don't take your time answer the questions in which you are very certain. The reason why I wasn't able to pass some exams is that I left many questions unanswered especially the important ones in exchange for the other questions that are little value to the results. It is also important to think carefully on your answers especially to essay parts. Make your answers in essay parts creatively and that will attract the attention of the employers. In a company handled by the call center Acceture, I made at least an impression with the interviewer with my answer in an essay in which I used overt, attracting and extravagant words.
dot com craze - Be very careful of what you apply online especially on websites that are unheard of or looks like it is made by beginners (I admit I make websites that looks like that hehehe). One website that claims that they have the list of best jobs, produce the 2 companies that I have talked about earlier. It is also important to know what you had applied to prevent confusion and prevent applying on a wrong position if ever you are asked to come to the office and fill up some forms. Also, be careful of the forms you fill up online, for my experience, several companies take several glances of me only to find out that I click "female" for the sex part and being an expert in Macromedia flash (well not really an expert I just know things that's all) up to now, I was not able to change it just for the simple reason that I'm lazy to do that for now
Good morning starshine! The earth says hello! - It is very important to go to an appointment early or at least on time to give good impressions. sadly for me, I was frequently late from a few minutes to the worst an hour later. To prevent these, plan where you are headed. Ask the one who contact you how to get to that office or from the address you were provided you to go to, go to the nearest bookstore (fully booked or Powerbooks) look for a map and find the area where it is located at least these will give you an idea and makes you plan how to get there and be familiar where you should go. I do this all the time and it is very useful and makes me save a little for the cost. I recommend the map of manila by citi atlas (I don't know if that is the exact title) or the one who has the detail map of ortigas and makati as they show even the name of the building on these areas. It is free of course and at least they will certainly help you on finding your destination.
I didn't that! I didn't that! - Obviously, speak proper english (as this is the universal language in business) and prevent wrong grammar to prevent yourself from embarrassment. When contacting and asking for the HR, speak in english at least you can give impression as they have contacts with the one who will employ you, they can certainly influence about your application. one more thing, show great interest that you really want to work on that company as this will give an impression that at least you are not wasting their time being there just for the sake of being there. Don't over do the thing though as for my experience, showing great interest or enthusiasm may disappoint you in the end
It's the end of the road, It's the end of the road whoooooo - In making appointments, you cannot prevent some times clashing. Make it a point that when making an appointment, be sure you schedule only one company per day as you cannot prevent that sometimes you have to spend time more to the point it will take you a whole day just to finish. Unless your contact said a particular time it will be finished or it will just take you at least 2 hours to finish, you can schedule another company after. Just make it sure you have a time allowance on getting from a company to another and just what I have said earlier, plan.
Funtime is chowtime! - After your appointment/s, have fun. go to the nearest mall in the area or have snacks. This will allow you at least forget what happened after a stressful interview or exam. On my experience, I grew tired of Megamall, Galleria, Glorietta and greenbelt (2,3,4) because I always go to these malls after my appointments, exams or interviews.
