- The Junior Black Belts
-
Take a look at this group of young men.
This is a good group and they all did well on their presentations.
I feel like I have cause to be proud of them. They acquitted themselves very well against three sadistic, er - I mean challenging black belts.
That's me in the back.
The Jr. Black belts are (r to l): Kenji, Ian, Jacob and Derrick.
- This Saturday
-
The dojo is done. Kaput. Closed.
Oddly, it's almost a relief. Tomorrow is the last day I have to leave work early to make it to class. Tomorrow is the last Game Day for the kids classes. Saturday is the last promotion.
With a bit of luck I'll get a lot of good pictures and be able to post some of them. I hope, in fact, to be able to get some video.
- The Last Promotion at New School Aikido of Rio Vista.
-
On January 26, 2008 we will be having a big day in Rio Vista. The
schedule is as follows:
10:00 AM - 11:30 AM -- River Rats Promotions. This will be the last
such promotion in the current space and may be the last promotion in
Rio Vista.
11:30 AM - 12:30 PM -- Junior Black Belt presentations. We have three
students who will be giving their presentation, on right after the other:
- Ian Deak
- Derrick Deak
- Jacob Kelp
Not necessarily in that order. These three cousins have been training
in Rio Vista almost since the beginning, so it's fitting that their
presentations be done as part of the final big bash in the dojo.
12:30 PM - whenever -- Pulling up the mat, cleaning up the space,
loading up the truck(s). It's likely that pizza will be involved.
As of February 1, 2008, the dojo will be closed. There's a possibility that some of the students will pull together an Aikido club. I hope they do. But I've done all I can to influence them in this respect and now it's up to them.
- New Years Eve Latte
-
Yeah, yeah, I know. It's cheesy. But I felt like it was time I put something in my blog.
| What Your Latte Says About You |
You are easygoing and pretty simple to please. You don't put up a fuss... ever. You can be quite silly at times, but you know when to buckle down and be serious. You have a good deal of energy, but you pace yourself. You never burn out too fast. You're addicted to caffeine. There's no denying it. You are a child at heart, and you don't ever miss the opportunity to do something playful. You are sophisticated and daring, but you are never snobby. |
- Billy Rocked
-
Billy was great. His presentation was very good. He shined in his technical stuff. He did one thing I would have advised him against because we don't really cover that stuff in the junior program, but he pulled it off, so no harm done. His randori's shined and even when he reluctantly did a jiyu waza (I think he was hoping right up until the last minute I'd let him slide on it) he did very well.
Oh, and he asked - IMO - the best question I've ever heard in a Black Belt Presentation: "How many randori's am I allowed?" I think he'd have been quite happy to spend the entire fifteen minutes doing randori.
Junior Black Belts are required to pick an animal and explain the symbolism of the animal as part of their presentation. I rather thought Billy's animal was apt, considering the season. He picked a dog, symbolizing loyalty. He said it's important to be loyal to your Aikido friends, because without friends you don't get anywhere.
