I took this photo of a june bug that came sputtering into my house when the door was opened last October. The june bugs are a noisy bunch. In the early morning before light they beat themselves against the window, the door, and the outside light. It makes quite a clatter. This bug turned himself upsidedown and was in the process of righting himself. I was fascinated by the detail I captured in a series of photos I took. These animals are very complex and delicate. They are beautiful in their own way. Once the photo session was over, june bug was gently set back outside.

It's time to dream of the summer to come. I am dreaming of leading a string of pack llamas through a beautiful high Sierra meadow on a warm summer's day.

Today we measured a few of the boys. Jupiter, Chief, and James were all caught, weighed, measured for height and ground clearance, and toenails clipped. We also brushed them and took some pictures.

We separated Paradise from her mother, Utopea. It is long past time for the little girl to wean from her mother. I hope she will stay in with her sisters and not try to jump the fence to be with her mother.

We stayed out working around the barn until we got cold. By then the day was coming to an end and we went straight to the hot tub to warm up.

The Sentinel

It is evening in the high Sierra.

The sun has disappeared below distant mountains obscuring the meadow.

Chilled air drains down from surrounding peaks.

Deep in the wilderness one llama stands guard while the others bed down for the night.

Stars begin to appear in the darkening sky.

Unseen predators may lurk in the gloaming.

One llama will watch until it is his turn to sleep

Then another will stand to take his place.

Entry for April 26, 2007 Trip to Idaho
Entry for April 26, 2007 Trip to Idaho magnify
Just two weeks ago we went on a trip to Idaho in our search for a new stud llama that we can breed to our Magma daughters. We left on Friday morning and returned Sunday evening. We drove 1496 miles and towed our 16 foot stock trailer.

We ended up buying two young males that we had researched and planned to check out on the trip. Zorro will be three in July. Chief will be two years old soon.

In the picture above is Tunisia. She will be one year in July. We bought her at different farm. She is the beautiful girl on the left.

It was quick trip with a lot of driving. All new llamas are living comfortably in quarantine. Our vet will visit them on Monday.
