My friend Ron and Michael Jackson- Entry for June 29, 2009
My friend Ron and Michael Jackson- Entry for June 29, 2009 magnify
I have some very interesting friends ...I tell you...

Ron Magill is someone I used to work with at a night club in Miami in the 80's. It was soo funny when we worked the door together seeing how I am 5ft and Ron is 6'6"! Along with being the public relations guy at the Miami zoo...Ron is an excellent photographer and sent me an invitation to one of his shows a few yrs ago. GREAT STUFF! -check out his site here.
ANYWAY- here is what he posted on his Facebook site about his encounter with Michael Jackson-

"this is me with Michael Jackson after a special tour I gave him and his children at the zoo several years ago.

Though I am not one to usually jump on the bandwagon when it comes to celebrity gossip, I feel compelled to comment on the death of Michael Jackson. I few years back I received a call from Michael asking to come to the zoo with his 3 children. He asked that I meet him after hours and not tell anyone since the privacy of his children was very important to him.I must confess that though I thought he was an entertainment genius, my personal opinion of him was not very high because of the many negative reports I'd heard through the media. When he arrived at the zoo, I was surprised to find him alone with his children and a personal assistant. There was no entourage, and no bodyguards.

Because of the various reports that I had heard about him being a germaphobe, etc. I was reluctant to extend my hand to him afraid he would leave me hanging. He not only eagerly shook my hand but could not stop saying how appreciative he was that I was doing this favor for him and his children. He wasn't wearing any masks or gloves, nor were his children who were well behaved.

I have had the opportunity to host many "celebrities" and they can be quite obnoxious, demanding, and not very pleasant to be around. I honestly expected this from Jackson but was very surprised to find the absolute opposite. He was quiet and extremely appreciative. His children obviously adored him and were well mannered saying "please, thank you, and excuse me" when speaking.

He came to my office and told me how much he loved animals (though I told him that keeping exotics as pets was a mistake!). As he surveyed the many things in my office, he was singing in a low voice while snapping his fingers and swaying his body. This was surreal to me as I sat in my chair and tried to absorb Michael Jackson, the greatest entertainer of my generation, singing and dancing in my office.

I had only spent a couple of hours with him and I am by no means claiming to have gotten to "know him," but they were private hours with his children and I saw a side of Michael Jackson that I didn't believe existed because of everything that had been reported about him. The fact is that during those 2 hours, he was a loving father and gentleman in every sense.

There is no question in my mind that Jackson had some serious demons that he was fighting and that where there is so much smoke, there is usually fire. However, I'll never forget how he responded to me when he left and I told him that if more people saw this side of him he wouldn't have as many problems. He shook my hand, looked me straight in the eye, and said, "No one will ever know what it's like to have to be me."

I realized then that I would never want to be in his position. He was an extremely gifted talent with deep seeded, complicated issues that only he truly knew about. Though his physical appearance was shocking, his was an absolute gentleman and acted as a very appreciative person who was a pleasure to spend time with. He appeared truly happy spending time with his children and the animals.

Hope all is well out there!

They Actually Pay People to Do This Research

Two scientists from Britain's University of Oxford, on a three-year study costing the equivalent of nearly $500,000, found that ducks may be even more comfortable standing under a sprinkler than paddling around in a pond. Lead researcher Marian Stamp Dawkins concluded that ducks basically just like water. [The Guardian, 5-20-09]
Duh....

In May, Ichiro Saito, a professor of dentistry at Tsurumi University, publicly warned that as many as 30 million Japanese workers overstressed by the economy are suffering from such severe dry mouth that the country might be experiencing epic halitosis. [Daily Telegraph (London), 5-27-09]YUCK!

The head of Florida's Department of Corrections admitted in May that at least 43 children (including a 5-year-old), who observed their parents' prison jobs as part of "Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day" in April, were playfully zapped by 50,000-volt stun guns. DOC Secretary Walt McNeil said the demonstrations (in three of the state's 55 prisons) even included one warden's kid, but that only 14 children were individually shot (with the rest part of hand-holding circles feeling a passing current). Twenty-one employees were disciplined. [St. Petersburg Times, 5-16-09]

Yikes!

Men Who Get Around: Thomas Frazier, 42, was jailed in Flint, Mich., in April after his unpaid child-support tab reached $530,000 (14 children with 13 women). He told the judge that he was only trying "to find someone who would love me for me." [Flint Journal, 4-11-09]

The total tab of Desmond Hatchell, 29, of Knoxville, Tenn., was not reported at his May court appearance, but the judge questioned him sharply about payments from his minimum-wage job. Hatchell has 21 kids by 11 women, but told WLVT-TV, "I didn't intend to have this many." [WLVT-TV (Knoxville), 5-22-09]

It has been SO HOT HERE! heat index was 104 today!

Hope all is well out there!

Fire guts Georgia Theatre in Athens Ga.

Only brick exterior left standing; owner hopes to rebuild

( I have played music and sang here quite a few times back in the day-a few years ago...man I hope they clean their bathrooms and make a better backstage if they rebuild!)

Bill “Duck” Anderson remembers seeing huge music entertainment stars come through the Georgia Theatre when they were mere startups.

“Dave Matthews, this was the first place he drew a crowd,” said Anderson, who owned the theater from 1989 to 2005. “Hootie and the Blowfish used to come on Tuesday nights for $3 and 200 people would show up. The Ramones, Wynton Marsalis, the B-52s — you name it, they probably played there.”

Some more names you might recognize: B.B. King, R.E.M., Wide Spread Panic, John Mayer, Drive-by Truckers, Tom Waits, Pylon, Sister Hazel, and on and on.

All that history went up in smoke when fire destroyed the iconic Athens landmark Friday morning.

“It sounds like a cliche, but it’s like losing a family member,” said Anderson, one of hundreds of onlookers watching firefighters pour water on building three hours after it caught fire. “When you spend 50 or 60 hours a week, six days a week for 15 years somewhere, that’s what it feels like.”

Four fire engines, three ladder trucks, two rescue vehicles, a HAZMAT unit and about 50 firefighters responded to the 6:50 a.m. fire call, according to Chuck Gulley, emergency management coordinator for the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department.

Gulley said the fire was under control by 8 a.m. By then, the famous theatre at the corner of Lumpkin and Clayton streets in downtown Athens was totally gutted.

Fire officials could not say how the fire started. There had been numerous lightning strikes in the area overnight.

“It may be a while before we know,” Gulley said.

Power was cut to the whole of downtown Athens shortly after 7 a.m. Jim Sikes of Georgia Power said about 450 customers were affected. Most had their power restored shortly before 11, he said.

Wilmot Greene, 38, the current owner of the theater, sat on a wall in a bank parking lot, drinking bottled water and smoking cigarettes while firemen fought the blaze. He said he bought the theater five years ago for $1.5 million and has been renovating it since then. He said he had spent nearly $750,000 on the 1930s-style art deco renovation.

“It was almost completely done,” said Greene, his white Oxford shirt covered in soot. “It was really beautiful. It was in better shape than it’s ever been in.”

Greene said he was insured and intends to rebuild.

“The question is, do I have enough” insurance, Greene said. “Even if the insurance pays for it and we can rebuild, it’ll never be the same,” he said. “They don’t build them like that anymore.”

They certainly don’t. According to Anderson, the building was erected around 1890 and became the first YMCA in the South. After that, he said it became a department store.

“They cut it half, built a balcony and made it a cinema in the 1930s,” he said. “Bands started playing there in the 1970s. There’s a lot of history in those walls.”

Eleven acts were scheduled to appear in the theater as part of the annual AthFest music festival next weekend. Festival organizers were looking for alternative venues Friday but hoped to find a place for the bands to play. The Morton Theater and the Classic Center were among venues being considered.

“There are soldiers in Iraq who heard about this today,” said J.R. Green, a former Athens club owner who works as a disc jockey now. “That gives you an idea of how notable that place is. It’s an institution.”

“It’s emotional on a lot of levels,” said Winfield Smith, the Georgia Theater’s bar manager the past five years who also played there as a musician. “It’s a place a business, a historical landmark, a pillar of the Athens music scene. And it looks like I’m out of a job.

“The best news is nobody was in the building,” Smith said.

But a lot of somebodies have been.

Hope all is well out there!

Lotza good ones in the weird news today! I'll start ya out with 3-

Can't Possibly Be True

When a son, angry that his father had ordered
him to clean up his room, screamed at Dad and threw a plate of food across the dinner table, Dad called 911. The son is 28-year-old Andrew Mizsak, who lives rent-free with his parents in the Cleveland suburb of Bedford, Ohio, and is a member of the Bedford School Board (and whose mom is a city councilwoman). After police arrived, the habitually untidy son apologized and, according to their report, "was sent to his room to clean it. He was crying uncontrollably." Subsequently, the school board punished Andrew by removing two of his duties. [Plain Dealer (Cleveland), 5-17-09] OMG that is frickin'unbelievable!

When courts in Nashville, Tenn., get too backed up, a local tradition allows judges to appoint well-known local attorneys to act as "special judges" to help clear dockets. According to a months-long investigation by WTVF-TV, broadcast in April, it appears that at least some of the "special judges" used their power largely to dismiss speeding tickets, including at least one instance of a lawyer's dismissing his own client's ticket. The station found that of almost 1,800 speeding tickets dismissed by courts during the time investigated, 1,300 were by the "special judges." [WTVF-TV, 4-29-09]

The Aristocrats!

Timothy Martin, 44, was arrested in Federal Way, Wash., in May for felony indecent exposure after he was spotted standing partially nude with a string attached to his penis and, according to police, apparently "manipulating it with the string like a puppet." [Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 5-20-09] HAaahaaaa!

on another HAPPY note-

We are very happy that we just found my Mom's Hound dog-"Elvie" -(Ms. Elvis) who has been missing for almost 3 days!YEA!

Hope all is well out there!
