Got the Shakes over Quakes and ready to run?
Well think again.
Yes, there was a recent earthquake here in the LA vicinity. Some felt it; others did not.
Sure we get all riled up when the quakes and wildfires seem to be on the rise, but they are not the heaviest death causing enviromental disaster to hit the USA.
Surprisingly, Southerners are more likely to die from the effects of the weather than people living in any other region of the US.
But for all the attention garnered by catastrophic hurricanes such as Katrina and Andrew or Wildfires and Earthquakes in California, simple heatwaves kill far more people than all natural disasters combined, according to a newly published county-by-county map of natural hazard deaths.
Other extreme summer hazards, such as floods, and cold winter weather also outranked hurricanes, earthquakes, and wildfires, according to geographers Kevin Borden and Susan Cutter, of the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Overall, natural disasters account for less than 5% of natural hazard deaths across the US.
Large cities like San Francisco and New York are among the safest places to live, but if city living isn't for you, the odds of dying from the weather are lowest in the Midwest.
Obviously no matter where you live or move, there's always going to be some natural occurances.(Texas Twisters, California Earthquakes, Northeast Blizzards, East Coast Hurricanes, Midwest Floods, Volcanos in Seattle and Hawaii, Swine Flu from the border) Grizzly, Cougar and Shark Attacks, Oh My!
America is a Flatbed of Enviromental Hazzards waiting to happen.
Unfortunately, We are the Biggest Natural Disaster to hit the planet so far! With over population, pollution and global homicide on the rise, it's just a matter of time before life wipes us clean off the surface and starts over.
So run and hide where you want, but you can't fool Mother Nature! She's one bossy lady and when she needs to do some cleaning, she'll find you!
Good Luck People, it's a Real Living World out there!
