Fort Ritchie Criterium

Ft Ritchie Recap

Despite steady rain at the start, (not drizzle, not showers, rain-lots of it) the Ft Ritchie Classic Criterium went quite well yesterday. The course was fast and the locals showed well in a number of races.

Here are a few notes. I hope that some of you can fill in the blanks. If anyone has photos, post them on the yahoo group page.

The Cat 5 - 30+ group started it off and with pouring rain and no knowledge of how the corners would race, everyone was watching closely. Randy Buxbaum pushed the pace for the first couple of laps then got run over by the freight train and chased the remainder of the race.

The AVC 50+ team put in a great effort with John Olinski, Dennis Crockett, and Mike Spinnler all taking turns at the front while Tom Lane blocked in the pack. The rain stopped and the guys were set up to put a bow on this package when a move off the front with one lap to go sent everyone scrambling and fractured the group. Lumpy dug in and got a 4th, with Dennis and Mike not far behind.

Ray Clarke had an outstanding showing in the 40+ race. After hanging at the back of the main group along with fellow AVC riders, Shawn Curtis and Jeff Stevens, Ray started moving up with about 8 laps to go. He launched off the front with 4 laps left and we all thought he just might make it to the end. He was working with one other guy, but Ray put in the majority of the effort. Unfortunately, they were caught on the last lap by the field and rolled in with the group, but Ray created a lot of excitement for everyone in the race. Thought that Phil Falconer would be in this race, but did not see him.

Steve Wahl showed a lot of spunk and got into a very tough 4-man break in the 30+ race. Not by design, as Steve was looking for a good result in the Cat 4 race later in the day. He chose to let this group go and finished with the field leaving some gas in the tank.

The women’s open race was well attended, maybe 25 at the start. Saw some of the ladies that frequent the KA rides.

The 1, 2, 3 race had a great turnout with some UCI guys, MABRA champions, and a couple international riders. The pace was incredibly fast as the course was now dry. Brian Fouche did AVC proud by staying in the mix right up to the end when he just missed the final selection.

Shawn and Steve, along with Scotty Gordon were back for a fast Cat 4 race, the race broke into several groups and Steve was in the main field but may done too much in the 30+ race. I did not see the finish as the women racers were picking up their prizes and I had to pay attention to that task. Sorry gents.

AVC was well represented in the Cat 3 race by Tim Lung, Joe Jefferson and Jeff Stevens. Another fast race and our guys had all been up since 4:00 AM. The race broke into 3 groups with 2 breaks and the main field. It all came together with less than 8 to go and Tim and Joe contested the field sprint.

Racing season 08, off and racing.....

Team AVC/Hagerstown-Washington County

Good start to the season Saturday and Sunday. The 50+ gang could have performed a tad better with a few mental improvements other than that a great job. John had us ready to go, coaching us through the race and performing great lead outs. We have to learn some tactics when it comes down to a field sprint, especially Jimbo.

Saturday racing was in Walkersville Md., at the Walkersville Road Race. AVC was represented by Stephen Wahl, cat 4. Brian Fouche, cat 1/2/3. Tom Lane, Dennis Crockett, John Olinski, Mike Spinnler, and Jim Long, cat 50+. Don Fienberg, 35+ Masters.

Stephen finished on the PODIUM! 3rd position. More than likely he will be moving into the cat 3 ranks soon. He was seen driving the 10 up break cracking the field. 75 starters in his race, with around 10 finishing in the first break, another 10 finishing in a second break group. Thus dropping 55 riders during the race, awesome. Race report to follow.

Brian Fouche finished in the pack. He put in some hard work. His report to follow.

50+ race, had a good squad from AVC on the line. Tom Lane got caught up in a crash and had to chase for a lap that did him in. John, did some great work on the course. He was away on the first lap. Covered several break attempts. Kept us informed during the race, unfortunately Jimbo was not listening properly! Lead us out on the finish driving the field with 400 meters to go, and still came in 16th. Mike Spinnler was a diesel/eveready bunny, he just kept going and going. We need to sit down and talk tactics with Mike, too much power used at the wrong time. What a force he will be. Mike came in 14th. Jimbo, needs to work on his mental game, should have performed better, came in 9th. Dennis, new to the team is already fitting in nicely. We are going to have to change his name to Crocket Rocket, especially since he won the field sprint. He came in 4th.

Don, did well in his race considering he is still sick with the flu. Way to battle it out, Don. We are sure he would have place much higher had it not been for the "wheezing" every time around course. Most of the field in Don's race where dropped on the first lap. Don mentioned that only 25 finished in the field sprint. 75 rider start, dropping 50, not bad Don, hanging in there, pace had to be high. Don finished 17th.

Sunday had the team racing in Tysons Corner Va. Not a great day for racing. Cold, and rainy all day. The 40/50 cat race had Joe Jefferson, Dennis Crocket, John Olinski and Jim Long on the line. Several breaks went up the road, all where reeled back in. High paced race, around 50 or so lined up. John had us flying on the last lap down the back side of the course. We all bunched up coming out of the last turn and in effect messing up our finishing strategy. We will have to work on that end of our team racing. Jimbo came across 4th, Dennis 6th, John 8th and Joe 21st. Not bad at all!

Stephen, lined up for the cat 4 race. He was working hard through out the race driving the pace trying to form a break away group. With all the hard work early in the race he did not have too many bullets at the end. His race ended up in a field sprint, with Stephen taking 8th. On top of that Stephen jumped into a second race of the day, cat 3/4 race.

Looks like team AVC has gathered a fair amount of total team points to start the season. Soon as the point total is available we will be posting. AVC should be in the top 10 and likely to be in the top 5 for total team points, awesome!

Below are some reports from your sponsored racers. Thanks again for all your support to team AVC/Hagerstown-Washington County.

Brian Fouche's race, 1/2/3 WRR;

First, big thanks go out to scott gordon and river city cycles for
getting me a fuji frame and getting it ready in time for the race.

Bike was great, but it was my first ride on it and it was a race, so
it took a little getting used to. Race was full 75 riders, suppossed
to be 75 miles, but we ended up doing around 65 in 2:30.

It was a pretty uneventful race. A few teams with a ton of riders,
and they basically controlled the race. I stayed in the back of the
pack most of the race, as everything was getting chased down, and
nothing was going to stick as we were averaging 27-28 mph, and it
seemed rite aid wanted a sprint finish which they got. I felt good,
but for some reason started cramping 30 miles in, but managed to just
sit in and finish. with 2 to go before the first little climb on the
course there was a crash on a wide straight section and i got caught
behind it, came to almost a complete stop, but didn't crash. Field
had a good 100+ meters on me, but somehow i bridged back up to it on
the climb. Legs felt good on the last lap, but i didn't contest the
sprint, as i wasn't even sprinting and spinning out my 53x12 probably
doing 40mph the last K.

Brian Fouche

Stephen Wahl's race, WRR and Tysons;

The Tour of Walkersville
Walkersville was the most fun I have had in a road race. I did a fair amount of work on the front, chasing down a few breaks and then pulled myself and CG up to the NCVC guy at the end of the 2nd lap that would end up being the beginning of the breakaway that stayed away the rest of the race. The three of us stayed away for a lap (I think it was a lap) and then were joined by three more guys that bridged up.

We were working well together, communicating, rotating, and kept the pace up. A couple more bridged up and I believe that was it. Carlos, the guy from Bolivia was there in the breakaway.

On the last lap 2 guys got away at the stair step by the barn and I thought we wouldn't catch them. We caught them before the last turn onto Dublin and things started to get a little less organized since we were all getting ready for the sprint. The pace picked up again and guys would try to jump every once in a while, but someone always covered their move. I had good position coming up to the 200 meter mark but then got boxed in. I had to let the guys go around me before I could start my sprint, just missing 2nd place as CG rolled through a wheel ahead of me. Awesome race! My adrenalin was pumping just being in the break and working with a strong group of guys.

Tyson's Corner
I worked my butt off in the 4 race, trying to cover everything and stay at the front of the race. Every time I came to the top of the hill on the finish stretch, Joe was telling me to drop a gear and hammer it on the false flat. I couldn't. I needed to recover. That hill was getting tough. I basically did too much work and went too early on the sprint for the finish. Managed to pull 8th after leading out the Rt 1 guy that won the race. He said he was following my wheel waiting for me to go and jumped when I jumped.

I almost decided to skip the 3/4 race since I had done so much work the day before and then did a lot in the 4 race, but figured I spent the money and would race as long as I could. I actually hung with the field all the way up until the 2nd to last lap. I was feeling ok, working and mixing it up a little in the middle of the field but the hill was wearing on me. The last few laps were spent riding up near the front coming up the hill and fading to the back, and then chasing on the false flat. The pace picked up a little on the 2nd to last lap and I couldn't hang any more so I let the field go and finished by myself.

I was just happy to finish since I was planning on skipping the race all together. Got a great workout this weekend and when I put my jeans on after the race, they wouldn't stay up. Guess I lost those last couple of pounds today.

MABRA 08, off and racing. First training race for the season began last Sunday in Upper Marlboro MD. Trade Zone Training Series runs every Sunday for 6 sessions. AVC team member Steve Wahl marked his first and AVC's first podium finish for the 08 season. Steve finish 3rd out of a pack of 75 riders, categories 3/4/5, great job Steve! Baring any interruptions from the weather there should be 3 or 4 AVC team members at the next race, Sunday. Hopefully we can deliver AVC to the number 1 position. Good training, team AVC.

Entry for January 11, 2008

Training is starting in earnest for many of team AVC members. The racing season for 08 is just around the corner with training races starting in February. Many AVC riders will be participating in the early season training races. Two series will be held, one in Upper Marlboro, MD and the other near Dulles airport in Chantilly, Va. Last year the team did very well with new podium finishes. We are excited about improving our position over all in the team standings for 08. Many riders are beginning to excel and will be improving on each individual standings. A short summary of results from 07. Team AVC/Hagerstown-Washington County finished 12th over all out of 166 teams, not bad considering we are only 23 racers strong with less than 50% racing the entire season due to injuries and family commitments. Several highlights where Stephan Wahl winning the Cyclocross Championship, finishing 1st as a cat 4 rider. John Olinski just missed by 12 points finishing 1st in the Masters 50+ cat, taking second place honors. Other riders performed well during the season. Our 50+ squad for 08 looks to be awesome. AVC will be able to put down the hammer and compete with some of the big teams. Stephen Wahl and Jim Johnson, up and coming stars will be moving up through the categories. Cat 2 and 3 are not out of the question. Brain Fouche will have a new team mate in the 1/2/3 division, Paul Tower, look for these riders to do some scoring. Our other team members performed very well in their respective categories, road racing and cyclocross. Other highlights include, Masters 50+ finishes - John Olinski 2nd, Tim Lung 18th, Phil Hepburn 23rd, William Jackson 41st, Thomas Lane 45th, out of 77 scored riders. Masters 40+ finishes had Ray Clark 59th ( mid season injury put Ray on the side lines, will be back strong in 08), William Jackson 90th, James Long 90th, Don Feinburg 108th, out of 108 scored riders. Masters 30+ finishes, Jeff Sanders 52nd, Jack Gardner 92nd, out of 108 scored riders. Cat 4/5 finishes Stephen Wahl 29th, Jim Johnson 39th, Don Feinburg 82nd, out of 143 scored riders. Cat 3 finishes, Stephen Wahl 53rd, Joe Jefferson 122nd, out of 122 scored riders. Cat 1/2 finishes, Alejandro Padillia 31st, Brian Fouche 55th, out of 113 scored riders. Keep in mind that many racers do not even score, generally only the top 10 to 15 riders will score in a individual race. Leaving around 75% of the race field with no points. Along with some cyclocross results, Stephen Wahl 1st place, cat 4 and Brian Fouche 36th in the 1/2 division. There are several other team members that we have not seen their results yet and we will be posting later, sorry for any omissions. AVC team roster of Randall Buxbaum, Ray Clark, Larry Dell, Don Feinburg, Brian Fouche, Jack Gardner, Scott Gordon, Joe Hagar, Phil Hepburn, Ken Hull, William Jackson, Joe Jefferson, James Long, Thomas Lane, Tim Lung, Rick Michael, Mark Monnet, John Olinski, Jeff Sanders, Stephen Wahl, Alphonso Wyne, and Bruce Zavos, also there are a couple of names that did not make the main roster page, hopefully this will be updated soon. Many thanks to our sponors and fellow team racers, looking forward to a fantastic 08 season.

"Top end racing bicycles can sell for over $4,000.00 and then some. Exotic metals and alloys are involved in the manufacturing process in the quest for strength, agility and weight. Large groups visiting our county, of which many are people who are racing top-end bikes, can be a great boost to our local economy."

Antietam Velo Club/Team Hagerstown-Washington County bike racers travel to several other communities for weekend races, including in the past two weekends to Virginia, Pennsylvania, and events throughout Maryland. Also, team co-director Joe Jefferson not only competes wearing the team livery, but is one of the top race announcers in the region, including for several national races. Jefferson provides race announcing and commentary for many local races in the region, and also for the annual JFK 50-Mile Ultramarathon.

"Washington County has some of the best bike riding in the Mid-Atlantic. Whether it is road riding, or mountain biking," said Cumberland Cycling Club President Richard Cushwa. "Trails.com listed some of the best riding in the nation as being right here in our area. Half of the top ten most popular trails in Maryland are in or near Washington County." Trails.com also reported that trails in Maryland and other locations throughout the Tri-State area are among the top 20 on the Web site's National Top 100 list.

Swamped with requests, the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau's new bike map and brochure has been "flying out the door," according to CVB President Tom Riford. "We're just about ready to put the whole thing on-line, as well, with printable bike tour maps, and more."

Riford said that sponsoring the local bike racing team was important. "These great local riders are ambassadors for our county. They are not only moving billboards for Hagerstown and Washington County, but they are knowledgeable bike riders, and know just how great the local cycling is. We are very pleased to be able to sponsor this team, after all, cycling has historically been a popular sport in Washington County for more than 120 years."

Other sponsors of the team include: River City Cycles, Cliff Bar, Sharrett Car Dealership, Port City Java, Vredestein Tires, Rockstar Energy Drink, and Gold's Gym.
