Okay... how about stamping?
Here is my - finally! - completed BSJ. I added a collar and cuffs. It's thanks to Joansie that I added the cuffs, and I have to admit I'm glad I did. I checked a few sweater patterns I had, and saw that most of the patterns that have a 24" chest have 8" sleeves, so I added ribbing until the sleeves measured 8". I only had those three buttons in the right size and color, so I closed up the bottom two buttonholes. This is going to the community center, so I hope it will fit someone!
Do you recognize the yarn I used?
I am about halfway done with the leg on the second sock for my niece Kim. I've also been working on another surprise for Meital. It's a bigger deal than the last one (Bun-Bun the bunny), so it will take several more days' work until it's done. I can't wait to see her reaction!
I also want to get back to work on Liat's Doll Bag. I can't wait to see how it looks when it's done and felted.
I had a great day at the community center today. I worked mostly with Ortal, a fifth grader. She's the first kid I remember meeting when I started volunteering there, three years ago. She's very special to me. She's the girl I knitted that brightly colored sweater for last year. I only wish I had enough time to sit with each of the kids, but there are at least 14 of them there. I hope that later in the year I'll be able to do arts & crafts projects with the whole group, as I did last year.
I'm showing you this card again because I just learned today that it was published in the current (Nov/Dec) issue of Rubberstampmadness Magazine! I am so thrilled and delighted! They included a short piece (written by me) about my 50 cards project. ![]()
I finished the BSJ, added a collar, and sewed on three buttons (I only had three the same of the ones I wanted). I closed up the other two buttonholes. But I don't have a photo yet because I decided to add cuffs to the sleeves, and I'm not sure how long to make them. I am awaiting advice from one of my BSJ gurus (guri??), Joansie.
I also finished the first Oh So Nikki sock for my niece, and started the second one.
All in all, a pretty darn good day! ![]()
You see here the final card of 50 cards for my sister's 50th birthday! Yep, the card and the package containing scarf and socks went into the mail this morning. On the one hand, I feel sad. But on the other, I feel free!!!!!!!!! Now I can get back to ATCs, and to making cards for other folks...
I finished the body of the Baby Surprise Jacket today! After tricking the girls by showing it to them unfolded, proudly showing off the baby sweater I'd made and asking their opinion (I'm sooo evil!
) I then folded it up so they could see the transformation! Now I'm knitting on a collar. I haven't decided if I'll add cuffs or not. I have a feeling those sleeves are too short, but... Well, I'll decide later and then you'll see what I decided - possibly tomorrow.
I'm working the toe decreases on the first sock for my niece. I'd like to finish that sock tonight and start the second one, as well. But I want to finish the BSJ, too... Hmmm!
Meet Bun-Bun, the toy I made for Meital as a reward for her having finished reading 8 books in English. This is a Jean Greenhowe pattern. I just LOVE her designs! I now have 4 of her booklets, and I want all the rest. I'm itching to try several dolls, the penguin, the chicks, the teddies... I could go on and on!
Check out her website: she even has close ups of each and every design in each of her booklets right there on the website, so you can see exactly what's in each booklet.
I sent out a few Halloween cards today, and two more cards for my sister. I started the last card, and really hope I can finish it up tomorrow and get her gift package in the mail. The package for my dad also went out today.
My younger niece's sock is close to the toe decreases. I also started a card for her, but I want it to be special so it's taking some time. I'm using a design in a cardmaking book I have. Today, she asked me if it was possible to knit knee socks! I told her "Of course!" and then peppered her with questions about colors (I already know she likes blue, but I thought she might like something colorful) and asked her to measure her leg. I told her that her birthday socks wouldn' t be knee highs, but that I will make knee socks for her the next time she comes up in the sock knitting rotation. Yahoo! Another handknit sock convert... ![]()
Here are three of the four projects I have worked on regularly for the past few days. The fourth one is a surprise for Meital, a reward for reading a certain number of books in English. I will tell you that it's from one of the Jean Greenhowe books I ordered a few months ago, but I don' t want to risk her seeing a photo until she's been given the toy. Shhh... ![]()
From left to right, we have the Berroco Doll Bag for Liat, the Oh So Nikki sock for my niece, and the Baby Surprise Jacket for the community center. There are close-ups of the bag and the sock on my other blog.
I'm nearly ready to mail out card #3! I hope to spend tomorrow finishing that and making the last two cards, packing up Linda's gifts, and getting my dad's package ready to mail, as well.
I meant to write about ganseys yesterday, but forgot. Tonight I'm using Meital's computer while mine undergoes defragmentation, which is taking far, far longer than I'd like. Maybe the fact that I haven't done it in... well... basically NEVER probably has something to do with the amount of time the task is consuming. So I don't have the links handy that I'd love to give you. Instead, I will quote from the incomparable Elizabeth Zimmermann. Ganseys, or guernseys, are a "typical navy-blue or black jersey of the commercial fisherman... very tightly knitted in strong wool... extremely wind-and-weatherproof." (p. 129, Knitting Workshop). If you Google "knitted gansey" you'll find several interesting websites. Ganseys use a variety of cables and knit and purl stitch combinations (such as moss stitch) to increase durability and warmth. The socks I made gave just a tiny taste of gansey knitting, hence the name (I Love Gansey).
