Happy Spring, Easter, and Mother's Day to you all! magnify
Hi Mom and Dad, friends and family,
Happy Spring, Easter, and Mother's Day to you all!
Here is what is going on with D, Merty and me.
Lots of big changes...
Merty is fabulous and spoiled as always. He gets a haircut about once a month, treats, and special food which is mixed by yours truly for him daily. He has beds all over the house on all of the pillows on all of the chairs and couches. He gets multiple walks with D each day. And, he sleeps a lot, like his daddy Michael ('cuz we are getting older).
D is very busy and stressed with his project at work right now (it is still runaway, probably till next fall, and he is back to some form of overtime/no vacation or personal days allowed again, possibly from April till next fall... uggh).
I have a big change in my life. I just had the big transmission repair with the truck. (And btw I am so grateful for the gift of this truck from Mom and Dad. You cannot know how much this has helped me in so many ways!). Since I know that I cannot ever afford another truck/car payment, and have my life be what it needs to be in terms of schedule and budget, I have made a decision:
It is my decision that I am only performing one time a month at places where elders live. I am teaching/coaching three Tuesdays a month (with D's kind allowance) and performing the other Tuesday. Then I teach Wednesday - Friday afternoons, plus sell my books, cds, videos online. I continue to write, record, film, paint, draw, sculpt, weave, knit, do needlework, etc., as well, as I have time and energy, according to my multi-colored, 7-columned, constantly evolving schedule!
The above will allow me to put only about 800 miles or so a year on the truck, and this should allow me to teach and perform into my eighties and still have this vehicle. Fingers crossed... say a prayer for me that this is so! I must teach and perform as long as I live, since I will not be able to retire, like many (self employed or otherwise) of my generation, due to financial reasons. I think I can handle teaching in the evenings Tuesday - Fridays, and one performance a month, even in old age. Grandpa Blodgett, our favorite octogenarian, will be my guide and inspiration in this!
Being on D's health insurance is wonderful, though it has been very stressful having the ten years of tests, etc. (that I should have had over the last decade) all in one month (now that these are covered and I can afford them). My new cpap machine, paid for by insurance, is wonderful. Technology is amazing. Too bad that affordable health insurance and medical technology is often only for the affluent (and those married to the affluent). I am very lucky to have such a hard working, successful spouse. D is so good to me. I am blessed.
My websites have all been converted to download only sites. So, now, customers can purchase any book, cd, (or video, as soon as I get these uploaded) and I do not have to print, copy, bind, package up and mail orders. It is all done on computer. Viewers just purchase a work with their credit card. Then it sends me an email. I create and "order" on the admin site ( http://downloads.music-outreach.com/ ), send the customer an email with a username, password and the link to the download center. After that, they just sign in, download the materials to their computer, and print out any books or copy any audio or video files to a cd or dvd. Voila! This is so much better. I just could not handle the mail order anymore.
By the way, this Wednesday, April first, is ten years for D and I. Where has the time gone? So much has happened, any yet ten years ago seems like yesterday. I look in the mirror though and see the tracks of time on my face. Who is that lined and creased creature looking back at me in the mirror?
Changes, changes...
"I grow old, I grow old... I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled..." -TS Eliot
Hope you all are doing well...
We (and that includes D and Merty!) love you all...
I have listed my sites and blogs below my signature if you would like to see what I am up to personally and creatively.
Michael :)

Dear Family, Friends, Students and Clients,
I thought this little email I sent to my family about my visit to my grandma (we call her 'Grammie") might be meaningful to you at holiday time...
Enjoy!
Michael

Dear Mom and Dad (Cc: family),
Just wanted you to know that D and I visited Grammie on Saturday. She was not feeling well and seemed pretty frail, but seemed very glad to see us. Everyone else, except for Uncle R, was gone. D found a beautiful holiday floral arrangement for Grammie, we gave her 3 angels (various colors, plus gold-leaf), and I gave her a shawl I knitted (which fit her perfectly).
We also brought my new guitar to show her, and I played and sang for her "It had to be You" and "The Slow Boat to China." I often bring new music, art and craft things to show her. She enjoys this, and this visit was no exception. Past hits have been: the banjitar, ukeles, knitting, and knitting devices. Once I did an interview with her for a book I was writing on needlework. That was especially fun for both of us, I think.
She seemed to enjoy this latest visit, and D and I did, too.
I miss our Tipton Christmases, complete with color wheel on the tree, bubble lights, turtles, and presents opened wildly by the little ones... but times change, and we get older (and hopefully wiser... wink). Spending time with Grammie was great, though. She is kinda the hub of it all, isn't she?
Just keeping you posted.
Love you...
Michael

"The Origin of Love"... This Wisdom is what our World, so Divided and Still Prejudiced , Needs!
"The Origin of Love"... This Wisdom is what our World, so Divided and Still Prejudiced , Needs! magnify

Dear Mom, Dad, Family, Friends, Clients, Adult Students,

Just above my signature, at the bottom of this journal entry is one more video for you to experience. It would be truly worth your time and so meaningful here at the cusp of the New Year for you to see it. (Note: what I present to you is for adults, not children, for it requires some sophisticated discernment and understanding.) I think seeing this video would be helpful to Mom as a minister, Dad as a teacher, and all of us as humans. I am sending a copy to family and friends, too. What you will see/hear is from a rock opera/movie/(off?) Broadway show called Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
"The Origin of Love" is my favorite part of the movie, Hedwig. I love the animated sequence depicted in the song/scene. It's based on a dialogue of Plato. The title of the dialogue is "The Symposium," and means "The Dinner Party."
In the Platonic dialogue, the members of the party discuss the various types of love and the benefits of each. In Hedwig, in "The Origin of Love," the various types of love are discussed and contrasted, as in the Platonic work. It's so great, simple, touching, and instructive. I just love it. The animations and the song are superb. I had just read the Platonic dialogue when I saw the movie and was astonished that the song and sequence was based on this.
Watch the whole thing (it's not long) to get the whole meaning...
The beginning is disturbing, but after that, I think you will find it extremely moving. If only church congregations could watch this with and open mind, it would be so instructive and thought-provoking. It could truly open hearts and minds.
I am sure I am naive thinking the above could ever happen... but the video is AWESOME.
Ultimately, we as viewers of this astonishinly meaningful little piece ar left to confront our own notions of love, divinity, relationship, intimacy, self, separation and isolation, union, longing... all the great issues and questions which being alive brings to our souls and hearts!
I think, if we at all have our eyes open when we watch this lovely little video, we see that love is love, and that we ALL long for union, for "no separation" which is our true nature and destiny.
I hope you enjoy this great video as much as I do. I find that "The Origin of Love" (from Hedwig) and "Simple Song" and "Make our Garden Grow" (both by Bernstein, and both of which are featured in my previous journal entry) are three songs from musical theatre which are integral to my world view at present. I suspect they will be so all of my life.

Much love to each of you...

MY CHRISTMAS PRESENT TO YOU... TWO REALLY BEAUTIFUL SONGS WHICH CONVEY WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT magnify
Dear Friends, Family,
Readers, Students and Clients,
I recently sent this email to my family. It is my Christmas present to them, and now I extend it to you, dear friends, readers, students and clients. The two songs I have linked to in the email are so beautiful and convey what life is all about... at Christmas and all year round.
I send you loving thoughts, prayers, affimation, and energy at the cusp of the New Year.
Much love,
Michael :)

To: Mom, Dad and Family at Christmas: From Michael (My gift to you!)
Here is an email I sent to Mom and Dad, but I am sending a copy to each of you as my Christmas present. I love you all very much
***************************************************
Thank you so much for your understanding, dear Mom and Dad!
I love you so very much! I appreciate your taking time to email to me your response, as well as taking time to speak with me on the phone. I just wanted to make sure you understood what is going on in our lives. Life, with its changes, responsibilities and relationships is complicated, isn't it? And yet so simple, too... We all love each other, and that makes all the complexity simple!
These two songs are very beautiful and illustrate my point above quite well, I think. They are my Christmas present to you, Mom and Dad, and our family. I know you will love them. Watch and listen to both, when you have a chance. They go together, and together will convey fully what I want to say to you. The lyrics to the two songs are below. They should increase your enjoyment.
"Simple Song,"
Leonard Bernstein, from Mass:
Mom and Dad, you will like the folk-ish quality of this selection. Enjoy (then on to "Make our Garden Grow"... Get your Kleenex box ready for tears of joy!)
"Make our Garden Grow,"
from Candide, based on Voltaire and by Leonard Bernstein:
"Make our Garden Grow" is almost too beautiful to bear, but watch the video anyway. Watch the whole thing. Watch the applause at the end and Spielberg's reaction. Such joy! The song, the glorious performance (and everyone's reaction at the end) so captures what life is all about.
Again, I love you... and D and I love you (and Merty loves you, too)!
Merry Christmas!
Michael:)

Lyrics to "Simple Song"
"Sing God a simple song
Lauda, laude
Make it up as you go along
Lauda, laude
Sing like you like to Sing
God loves all simple things
And love is the simplest of all."...
Lyrics to "Make Our Garden Grow"
CANDIDE
Let dreamers dream
What words they please,
Those edens can't be found.
So let us try,
Before we die,
To make some sense of life.
We're neither pure, nor wise, nor good
We'll do the best we know.
We'll build our house and chop our wood
And make our garden grow...
And make our garden grow.
CUNEGONDE
I thought the world
Was sugar cake
For so our master said.
But, now I'll teach
My hands to bake
Our loaf of daily bread.
CANDIDE AND CUNEGONDE
We're neither pure, nor wise, nor good
We'll do the best we know.
We'll build our house and chop our wood
And make our garden grow...
And make our garden grow.
(ensemble enters in gardening gear and a cow walks on)
CANDIDE, CUNEGONDE, MAXIMILLIAN, PAQUETTE, OLD LADY, DR. PANGLOSS
Let dreamers dream
What worlds they please
Those Edens can't be found.
The sweetest flowers,
The fairest trees
Are grown in solid ground.
ENSEMBLE (a cappella)
We're neither pure, nor wise, nor good
We'll do the best we know.
We'll build our house and chop our wood
And make our garden grow.
And make our garden grow!
A UNIQUE SORT OF LIFE COACHING...
A UNIQUE SORT OF LIFE COACHING... magnify

THE MOTHER OF ONE OF MY STUDENTS RECENTLY WROTE ME TO ASK WHAT LIFE COACHING PROGRAMS I WOULD RECOMMEND. HERE IS MY REPLY. IT HAS RELEVANCE TO POTENTIAL NEW COACHES AND POTENTIAL LIFE COACHING PARTICIPANTS:

Hi there! :)
I don't have too much advice for you really about the programs you mentioned. Life Coaching as of now is not regulated, as therapy, psychiatry, etc is. And, life coaching is not medical advice.
My coaching is a bit different from traditional coaching. As it has evolved, I most often offer it to students who are pursuing some creative endeavor with me (like guitar, piano, voice, music composition, writing, etc). They want to be more creative, and, say, sing in public, write, create, perform, become the next "American Idol," etc. And yet, they have life issues related to this which impede their progress. That's where most of the coaching I do comes in. Occasionally I have a coaching client who is strictly a coaching client and not pursuing "creative endeavors" (though just as all things are "spiritual," so all things involve creativity!)
I have not attended or pursued a formal life coaching program. I offer my experience to students which comes from a unique background which includes: a unique childhood with two uber-intellectual parents, a lifetime of reading and spiritual search, being a writer and performer, and a unique artistic and literary background. This background includes education (on bachelors and masters coursework level) as well as practical experience in a variety of genres in education and the arts. I have not done too much research into various life coaching programs since my work as a coach has grown out of what I describe in the paragraphs above. Formal life coaching programs have not seemed necessary to me.
I have heard students say my ideas sound like "The Secret" though I have not read/seen much about this. I do think Course in Miracles is very healthy, and any life coaching program which features Course in Miracles or New Thought type ideas would be good.
Clients come from all sorts of backgrounds, and one must be able to work with all, from Christian fundamentalists to more liberal and intellectual sorts. I try to listen, be able to take in a lot of information, and quickly devise (along with the client) a "plan" (which can change every day or every minute if necessary). It is the goal of this plan to get them where they want to go (along with help from the Universe and their higher self),
Ultimately, it is the goal of my coaching that the client will become their own "coach" and listen to their inner coach.
Of course, there are many other things I do and believe, but I hope that this "in a nutshell" information helps. Any programs which recommend this sort of approach I would recommend.
Peace...
Michael :)
