- Fanfic Site to Close; No Explanation Given
-
I've got some sad news for all my fellow fanfiction enthusiasts. FanLib is closing down August 4, 2008. The site administrators and mods haven't given any explanation, as far as I can tell, but there are rumors of a takeover by Disney. A Disney takeover would be better than having the site shut down for good, especially if they decide to leave it in its current form.
I've only been on FanLib for about a year, but it has enjoyed heavy traffic. It has truly been one of a kind among fanfic sites. The sense of community it has fostered has remained unmatched, and the sponsored contests have been a real selling point, at least for this writer. It's the only fanfic site that I know of where writers have the chance to receive tangible rewards for practicing their craft. In my mind, sort of legitimizes the effort and work that goes along with writing fanfiction and gets the writer closer to the proprietors of their fandoms than any other fanfic site I know of. I'd thought this site was in it for the long-haul. For all I know, it could still be (just under new management).
Here's to crossing our fingers and hoping for the best!
- New Series in the Works
-
First off, the latest chapter of Fumbling, "The Bigger They Are, the Harder They Fall," is now available on the fanfic sites and on the EM site.
In addition to that, multiple sequels to Fumbling are being planned. All the stories will be connected and will prominently feature the same main characters, but they will be set in different fandoms. More on this developing story soon.
- It's FINALLY Here
-
You've all been waiting for it, and it's finally here. The final installment of the "More Than a Lifetime" series is finally available. After a long hiatus, MTAL is back with the final story, "Edge of Heaven". The first chapter is available on Fanfiction.net, FicWad.com, and Fanlib.com, as well as the ENGAGEMedia site. The new story will be available on the Freedom of Speech site as soon as the previous stories of the MTAL series are on the site in their entirety. The process is slow for this site, however, because their guidelines and validation process only allow one chapter for each story to be posted at a time. Each new chapter must be validated by a moderator before a new chapter can be posted. The upload should be completed within the next few days, by next weekend at the very latest. More chapters for all the fics, including Edge of Heaven, are coming soon, so stay tuned.
- New Chapters and Projects!
-
It's been forever since my last post, and I've got quite a few updates. The latest chapter of Fumbling, "Missing," is up at Fanfiction.net, FanLib, and FicWad.com. Episode 4 of Defiant, "The Ties That Bind," is also up at all those locations. And of course, these chapters have been updated at the Engage website, as always.
Right now, I've got a lot of projects up in the air. In addition to working on Defiant and Fumbling, I'm also working on the final installment of More Than a Lifetime, my multi-series Trek series. I've been working on this series on and off for nearly ten years, and I'm finally finishing it up. I've also been thinking about a reboot of the first story in the series, "Delta Wild," but that's a long ways down the road. I'm still in the very early stages of planning that one.
I'm working on three or four original projects not associated with any fandom. There will be more information on these later, once they come closer to completion (and I register the copyrights for them)!

One of my biggest pet peeves concerns Titanic fics where Thomas Andrews is involved in a romantic relationship with a female original character. I know you’re wondering why. Well, I’ll let you in on my top reason why: the real Thomas Andrews was married.
Now, I know what you’re going to say – Victor Garber’s Thomas Andrews didn’t wear a wedding band and never mentioned having a wife or child. In fact, I even remember reading or hearing somewhere that Garber’s Andrews wasn’t married (though I can’t tell you where I heard that because I don’t remember). If you look at it all that way, I suppose Thomas Andrews/OC fics are okay. I mean, these stories are supposed to be fics about the movie.
But it still doesn’t sit right with me.
It all feels so wrong, as if writing a fic about TA being with anyone other than his wife Helen is somehow disrespecting his memory, tantamount to having TA have an extramarital affair or something. I just can’t get used to it; I don’t think I’ll ever be completely comfortable with the idea.
There some exceptions, however. There are always exceptions. Whenever I come across a TA romance fic, I always regard it with more skepticism than other stories. But most of the time, I do give them a chance. If the story has some substance, I read it; if it doesn’t, I don’t. It’s as simple as that.
What is substance? 1) A real plot. There’s got to be a point to the story beyond wanting the main OC character to end up with TA. 2) The relationship has to be believable. I absolutely detest stories where TA takes one look at an OC and falls madly in love with her. 3) TA does NOT fall in love with Rose. I HATE those stories. I know there’s a line in the screenplay that says TA falls under Rose’s spell, but that does not mean they’re meant to be together. Rose is not supposed to be with TA – she’s there for either Jack, Cal, or the rarely seen Marty Stu. I can tolerate a creative Rose/Cal story, but please, please spare me from Rose/TA.
Not all TA/OC stories are bad, as I’ve said; but most are. If you decide to go the TA/OC route, treat with care. Please.
