Time is Life (Friday Sermon)
Shaykh Saalih Aal Taalib

24, Jumaadal-Ulaa 1426 (1 July, 2005)

Fellow Muslims! Fear your Lord Who knows all that is hidden, and Sufficient is He, concerning the sins of His servants, as Acquainting and Seeing. Allaah says,

“O you who believe! Fear Allâh (by doing all that He has ordered and by abstaining from all that He has forbidden) as He should be feared. (Obey Him, be thankful to Him, and remember Him always), and die not except in a state of Islâm (as Muslims (with complete submission to Allâh)).”

(Aal ‘Imraan 3:102)

In this world, man is between two dreaded things: his past life which he does not know what Allaah is going to do with it, and the remaining part of his life which he does not know what Allaah is going to decide on it.

The wise one then makes proper use of his life for his own benefits, fills his worldly life with righteous deeds in preparation for his hereafter and judiciously uses his free time before a time comes when he will be busy. By Him in Whose Hand is my life, there is nothing one can do after the death has come, and there is nothing after the life of this world but Paradise or Hell.

Dear Muslims! Man’s conditions in this world change between health and illness, free time and busy time, toil and rest, seriousness and indolence.

These days, the end of the academic year has created some free time. It is now common that people have their annual vacation in the summer; a situation that was unknown before but only created by the contemporary modernity that has turned man into a tool for the whole year, toiling tirelessly and frantically running after the materials of this world, far from spiritual nourishment like eemaan, which is the source of rest for the body, heart and the soul. The plague of vacations had become so widespread that it has become the sign of the summer all over the world.

In view of the reality of Islaam, its universality, its comprehensiveness and its balanced rules and just laws, it has affirmed the soul and the body’s right to have their share of rest and relaxation. The Messenger of Allaah said, “Surely, your body has a right upon you and your family has a right upon you. So give each their right.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

The soul might become tired because of a long work. And the hearts also are tired like bodies. ‘Alee said, “Give the hearts an hour of rest every now and then, for if the heart is coerced into work it becomes blind.”

Nevertheless, this recreation should not be allowed to exceed the limits of what is permissible. It is authentically reported that the Messenger of used to make jokes but he would not say anything but the truth. He engaged ‘Aaishah in a race, played with children and encouraged playing with one’s wife. He approved that the Abyssinians should play with their javelins. He would tell his companions, “Throw [arrows], for your father was an arrow-thrower.” These are some of the allowed recreation that do not consume all the time and that do not become one’s perpetual habit.

Making oneself happy and cheerful and refreshing oneself through permitted recreational activities are some of the things that Islaam considers in its law. A permitted recreational activity is the one that does not contradict the fundamentals and laws of Islaam. It should not be a forbidden thing or lead to a forbidden thing or block the way to an obligatory deed.

Brethren in faith! Since vacations have become a reality in people’s life, the conscious Muslim should therefore always keep two things at the back of his mind:

One: That the time of vacation is a part of his life, that time is life and that vacation does not mean abandonment of works.

Two: That he is not excused from abiding by Islaamic obligations. For, man is required to use all his time in worshipping Allaah, which is the purpose for which he was created. Allaah says,

“And I (Allaah) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone).”

(Adh-Dhaariyaat 51:56)

However, this does not mean that one should spend all his time in prayer, fasting and jihad without any stop or rest. What is meant is that man should always remain in obedience to his Lord in all his situations. He should not abandon the obligation, for he is always commanded and prohibited and there is no time in his life in which he is free from Islaamic regulations and free to do all that he likes. He should always abide by obligatory, supererogatory and permitted things. At least, he is obliged to shun all forbidden things however remote or relaxed he may be.

Holiday is not a time used on the margin of life. It is rather part of man’s life that is not owned by man but by Allaah, Who created man so that he might use the time in the service of his Lord. That is why Allaah made it forbidden that man should destroy his own life or waste his time in any form and for any reason. Allaah says,

“And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allaah is Most Merciful to you. And whoever commits that through aggression and injustice, We shall cast him into the Fire.”

(An-Nisaa 4:29-30)

This is in spite of the fact that the suicide perpetrator killed only himself. This underlines man’s responsibility before his Creator, regarding his own life.

The Messenger of Allaah said, “The feet of the son of Adam shall not slip on the Day of Resurrection until he is asked of four things: His life as to how he spent it, his youth as how he used it, his knowledge as to what he did with it and his wealth as to where he got and how he spent it.” (At-Tirmidhee)

Travels are also part of life. And everyone shall be held accountable for how he spent the hours of his life. Based on this, we realize that the concept of time, according to Islaamic legislation, does not permit man to waste any part thereof. We also realize the greatness of time in that Allaah swears with it and with some parts of it. He says,

“By Al-'Asr (the time). Verily, man is in loss. Except those who believe (in Islaamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth (i.e. order one another to perform all kinds of good deeds (Al-Ma'ruf) which Allaah has ordained, and abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds (Al-Munkar which Allaah has forbidden), and recommend one another to patience.”

(Al-‘Asr 103:1-3)

Allaah also swears by the night when it covers and the day when it appears and with the two kinds of creation: male and female. He also affirms that people’s efforts are diverse. He swears by the sun and its brightness, and by the day, night and the soul, affirming that whoever purifies his soul has succeeded and that whoever instils it with corruption has failed. All this, indicating that time is the essence of life.

Fellow Muslims! The wise is the one who reflects over his affairs and realizes that movement of days means nearness of his death however long or short he is destined to live. He then takes the safe side, strives in his day and prepare for his morrow. The time is nothing but man’s life and his repeated breath. Time is precious. The part of it that is gone will never be retrieved.

We seriously need to be alert. Many are the heedless who have sold off their most precious possession –their time – for a pittance. The time goes and those who fail to catch up with it, their days and times will go in vain and they will incur great loss, and nothing will remain of the life but only its effects. So choose for yourself what will benefit you. That is why the prosperous ones will be told on the Day of Resurrection,

“Eat and drink at ease for that which you have sent on before you in days past!”

(Al-Haaqqah 69:24)

And the miserable ones will be told,

“That was because you had been exulting in the earth without any right (by worshipping others instead of Allaah and by committing crimes), and that you used to rejoice extremely (in your error). Enter the gates of Hell to abide therein: and (indeed) what an evil abode of the arrogant!”

(Ghaafir 40:75-76)

Dear brethren! Man has two days in which he will regret his time that he has wasted and in which he will ask to be given some respite.

One: when he dies, that is when he will say,

“My Lord! If only You would give me respite for a little while (i.e. return to the worldly life), then I should give Sadaqah (i.e. Zakât) of my wealth, and be among the righteous.”

(Al-Munaafiqoon 63:10)

And the answer to this request will be:

“And Allaah grants respite to none when his appointed time (death) comes. And Allaah is All-Aware of what you do.”

(Al-Munaafiqoon 63:11)

Two: in the Hereafter when he enters Hell. Allaah says,

“Therein they will cry: "Our Lord! Bring us out, we shall do righteous good deeds, not (the evil deeds) that we used to do.”

And the reply will be:

"Did We not give you lives long enough, so that whosoever would receive admonition could receive it? And the warner came to you. So taste you (the evil of your deeds). For the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers) there is no helper."

(Faatir 35:37)

Fellow Muslims! Preserving time and making proper spending of one’s life need some resoluteness and strong will. As for indolence, it is a destructive and fatal disease. It reflects negatively on individuals and the society. It causes languor, poverty, moral and material backwardness and it leads to sins. Though work might be strenuous, indolence is undoubtedly destructive. If one sits down too much, he will fail to achieve his goals.

Tell those who are looking for places of fun to kill their time: ‘Do you think that life is just a pastime or do you think that death is just a fun?’

Tell those who spend their days between illusions and dreams: ‘If you are ignorant of how much of the time you waste, visit the graveyards, and seek from their inhabitants some time so that you might know that time is a precious thing that cannot be perpetually owned and a missed thing that can never be retrieved.’

Many are those who say: O Lord, send me back to the world that I may do righteous deeds that I had earlier abandoned.’ But they will be told: ‘No, life does not go back.’

Free time does not remain so for ever. It must be filled with either a good or a bad deed. He who does not occupy himself with good deed will have himself occupied with evil deed. The righteous predecessors disliked that a man should have nothing to do neither in matters of his religion or matters of his worldly life. If free time is combined with wealth and health, the danger then becomes greater if that free time is not used in good thing. The Messenger of Allaah said, “There are two blessings in which many people are deluded: health and free time.” (Al-Bukhaaree)

Brethren in Islaam! If someone has no goal to pursue, he will waste his time. The one who wanders about aimlessly bothers none but only himself. A man without a goal is like a captain-less ship tossed about by the waves. Days are records of deeds, so fill them with good deeds. Opportunities move like clouds, and languor is the habit of backward people. He who adopts the life of weakness will stumble. If procrastination and indolence are combined they generate loss. One of the righteous people cried when he was dying and when he was asked of the cause of his crying he said, “I am crying in regret of a day in which I did not fast and a night in which I did not pray.”

The reality is that whenever everyone nears his death he regrets every moment in which he had not done a good deed, regardless of whether the person was righteous or neglectful. Can’t we then catch up with what is left of our lives? You will find the earliest generations the best in terms of their keenness to preserve their time more than a stingy person would be keen to preserve his money. The harvest of their keenness was useful knowledge, righteous deeds, fighting in the way of Allaah, glory and a firm-rooted civilization of towering branches.

But when you look at the situation of the contemporary Muslims, you will besurprised to notice how they waste their lives and times in a manner that is foolish and idiotic thereby lagging behind after they had been the leaders.

Fellow Muslims! If a man’s life is blessed he attains, within a short time, uncountable favours of Allaah. Many are those who are made to succeed in achieving a lot within a short time so much so that you think that their achievements are miracles, while the reality is that they are only blessed and made successful in investing their time in useful things. The best example is the Messenger of Allaah who brought the people out of darkness to the light and changed the face of human history within a short period of twenty-three years.

Another example is ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab who worked continuously through days and nights. He would say, “If I slept in the night I would waste my life and if I slept during the day I will waste the lives of my subjects. How can I then sleep between these two periods?”

Ibn ‘Aqeel said, “I cannot waste an hour of my life. Even if my tongue stops from reading and discussing matters of knowledge, and my eyes stops from browsing books, I make use of my thoughts at my time of rest and when I am lying down. When I get up I’ll already have in my mind what needs writing down.” That is how he was able to write his book, al-Funoon, about which adh-Dhahabee said, “Nothing greater than it [in its field] has ever been authored.”

Ibn al-Qayyim said about his Shaykh, “I have seen wonders in the strength of Shaykh al-Islaam concerning his ways, his actions and his writings. In a single day, he would author what a copyist would copy for a whole week.”

Adh-Dhahabee said about him, “His writings reached about five hundred volumes.”

All this is in addition to his other activities like da’wah and jihaad.

The Messenger of Allaah said, “He who fears [sudden attack of the enemy] sets out in the night, and he who sets out in the night will arrive at the appropriate station. Behold, Allaah’s commodity [Paradise] is precious and expensive! Behold, Allaah’s commodity [Paradise] is precious and expensive!” (At-Tirmidhee)

Brethren in faith! Since we have talked about time and the importance of investing it in useful things, here is a piece of advice for those who are gambling with their lives in the ambiguities of darkness that lead to unlawful shedding of the blood of Muslims.

Dear Muslim youths! The afflictions of your Ummah are many and its wounds are still fresh. However, the most bleeding wound of the Ummah and its most painful disease is the deviant thoughts and actions of some of its youths. It greatly pains this Ummah to see some of its youths attacking the scholars, the rulers and the wise men of their society who weigh the interests of the Ummah and try to prevent the worst of the two evils with the lesser one. This is a deviation that results in killings and shedding of innocent blood among Muslims and within the vicinity of the sacred cities.

The reprovers have reproved and the sincere advisers have given their sincere advice. The scholars have explained the truth. Will you then cease?

Many of the lives that should have been used in constructing the useful society with the guidance of the scholars and upon the Sunnah of the Prophet have been wasted. This is a call from a sympathetic and sincere adviser to those who have denounced the community of the Muslims to return to the right path. Let those who have committed mistakes repent, and those who are accused surrender themselves so that they can enjoy security. It is an act of bravery to admit mistakes and face the consequences.

It is our hope that you will understand and reason and then be excused and shown mercy. If not, you need to atone for your sins. Either of the two options is however better for a Muslim than proceeding in committing mistakes. Whatever Allaah has decreed shall come to pass, and to Him belongs the control of all affairs in the beginning and in the end. We seek refuge with Him against misleading trials.

Adhering to the Muslim Community
Adhering to the Muslim Community magnify
Shaykh ‘Alee Al-Hudhayfee
Muharram 18, 1424 (March 21, 2003)

All praise is due to Allaah Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings of Allaah be upon the Prophet, his household and companions.

Brethren in faith! Fear Allaah and obey Him. Return to Him in repentance.

Fellow Muslims! The highest goal of Islaam is reform the hearts and refine conducts. Islaam reforms the heart through belief in the Oneness of Allaah, loving that which He loves and abhorring that which He abhors of all sayings and deeds.

The Messenger of Allaah said: “Both legal and illegal things are evident but in between them there are doubtful (suspicious) things and most of the people have no knowledge about them. So whoever saves himself from these suspicious things saves his religion and his honour. And whoever indulges in these suspicious things is like a shepherd who grazes (his animals) near private pasture of someone else and at any moment he is liable to get in it. (O people!) Beware! Every king has a private pasture and the private pasture of Allah on the earth is His illegal (forbidden) things. Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body if it becomes good (reformed) the whole body becomes good but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt and that is the heart.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

Also, among the noble goals of Islaamic law is unity among Muslims. For it is through unity that their worldly and eternal good can be achieved. Allaah says,

“And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allaah (i.e. this Qur’aan), and be not divided among yourselves.”

(Aal ‘Imraan 3:103)

Allaah also says,

"And verily, this is my Straight Path, so follow it, and follow not (other) paths, for they will separate you away from His Path.”

(Al-An‘aam 6:153)

He also says,

“The believers are nothing else than brothers (in Islaamic religion). So make reconciliation between your brothers, and fear Allaah, that you may receive mercy.”

(Al-Hujuraat 49:10)

The Messenger of Allaah said, “You see the believers as regards their being merciful among themselves and showing love among themselves and being kind, resembling one body, so that, if any part of the body is not well then the whole body shares the sleeplessness (insomnia) and fever with it.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

In another hadeeth, the Messenger of Allaah said, “The believers are to one another like a building whose various parts strengthens one another.” (Al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

Among the things prohibited most by Allaah and His Messenger is disunity. Allaah says,

“And do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose courage and your strength depart, and be patient. Surely, Allaah is with those who are the patient.”

(Al-Anfaal 8:46)

He also says,

“And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves after the clear proofs had come to them. It is they for whom there is an awful torment.”

(Aal ‘Imraan 3:105)

In the hadeeth, the Messenger of Allaah used to say, “And do not disagree lest there is disunity in your hearts.” ‘Abdullaah bin Mas‘ood said: “There is nothing good in disunity.”

Al-Hasan bin ‘Alee said: “O you people! That which you dislike in being together is better than that which you like in being disunited.”

All these great concepts are obligatory on the Muslims at all times. They are however more binding during times of hardship and crises in order to protect the Muslims and safeguard Islaam. For unity is strength and disunity is weakness. That was why the Messenger of Allaah commanded that the Muslims should obey their rulers and stick to the community. He said, “Whoever dies without having a leader, he dies in the state of ignorance.” (Ahmad)

The Prophet also said, “I am commanding you to do five things which Allaah commanded me to do. They are: sticking to the community; to hear and obey; to make hijrah and to do jihaad in the way of Allaah. For whoever abandons the community even for an inch, such has thrown himself out of the fold of Islaam until he goes back from his decision. And whoever makes the proclamation of the time of ignorance; he is of the group that will enter the Fire.” People said: “O Messenger of Allaah! Even if he makes fasting and prays?” The Prophet answered: “Yes, even if he makes fasting and prays and claims to be a Muslim.” (Ahmad)

The Messenger of Allaah said, “Do not ask of three people: A man who abandons the community, disobeys his leader and then dies in the state of disobedience; a slave who escapes from his master and dies in that state and a woman whose husband goes away to look for something with which to feed her and she then engages in illicit affairs in his absence.” (Ahmad) The Prophet’s word ‘Do not ask of them’ means: ‘They are perished because of the gravity of their disobedience.’

The Messenger of Allaah also said, “The Hand of Allaah is with the congregation.”

It is therefore of the perfection of Islaam that it makes unity and obeying the constituted authority compulsory on the Muslims. This will make them strong in the face of any crisis or hardship. It will also preserve their religion from alterations and corruption and safeguard for them their worldly affairs. Al‘Irbaad bin Saariyah said: “The Messenger of Allaah gave us a sermon which shook the heart and made the eyes shed tears. We them told him: “O Messenger of Allaah! It seems like a farewell sermon. Please admonish us.” The Prophet then said, “I admonish you to fear Allaah and to hear and obey even if a slave makes himself the ruler over you. Certainly, whoever lives longer among you shall see a lot of disagreements. Therefore hold fast unto my Sunnah and that of my rightly guided and guiding successors. Hold unto it tenaciously and beware of innovations. For every innovation is error.” (Aboo Daawood)

Fellow Muslims! Among things that Islaam forbids is wading carelessly into events and crises. Allaah says,

“And follow not (O man i.e., say not, or do not or witness not) that of which you have no knowledge.”

(Al-Israa 17:36)

The Messenger of Allaah said, “Beware of crises. For the tongue is as harmful as the sword during crises.” (Ibn Maajah) The Muslim must therefore restrain his hand and tongue from wading into forbidden things during times of trials.

We are warning all Muslims and the youth especially from being carried away by false rumours and destructive ideas spread by some websites and satellite channels. These channels and sites only want to demean Islaam and cause disunity and fear among Muslims. They also aim at attacking Muslim rulers and their scholars. The scholars and the rulers are the standard for the well being of the ummah. If they are upright the ummah will be upright. We should therefore pray for them and not against them. The rulers must be assisted to carry their all-important responsibility. The scholars must also be assisted in explaining the injunctions of Allaah to people.

Brethren in Islaam! We should all join hands to face the challenges. Let us also thank Allaah for all His favours on us. Let us turn to Allaah in repentance. Allaah says,

“And verily, I am indeed forgiving to him who repents, believes (in My Oneness, and associates none in worship with Me) and does righteous good deeds, and then remains constant in doing them, (till his death).”

(Taa-Haa 20:82)

Fellow Muslims! Many calamities and hardships are afflicting the ummah presently and the only way out is to make a sincere repentance and hold fast to the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Prophet.

Dear brethren! Human beings of today have disobeyed Allaah and rebelled against His will more than their predecessors. It is in this age that narcotics are allowed to ruin the world and man transgresses against his fellow man. Powerful nations wrong the weak ones. Destructive wars are being waged and human lives as well as the crops are being wantonly destroyed. Weapons of mass destructions are used to threaten nations and individuals and immoralities and major sins have become widespread all over the world. Danger alarms are being raised all over the world warning mankind of their closeness to the abyss of perdition as a result of what they have created with their own hands. The oppression has become so much so that residential houses and places of worship are carelessly destroyed. But Allaah will certainly reward every one for what he did in this world. Allaah says in His glorious Book,

“It will not be in accordance with your desires (Muslims), nor those of the people of the ure (Jews and Christians), whosoever works evil, will have the recompense thereof, and he will not find any protector or helper besides Allaah.”

(An-Nisaa 4:123)

Brethren in faith! You should however pray to Allaah to remove the calamity off this ummah and to make the rulers and the scholars do only that which lead to the pleasure of Allaah. Let us also pray for our brethren in Iraq that Allaah should protect them from the evil of this war.

Do not also forget your Palestinian brethren and other suffering Muslims all over the world. Pray that Allaah protect them against the Zionist enemies and others. For the Prophet has said, “Confront the waves of calamities with supplications.”

Say: It Is From Yourselves

Say: It Is From Yourselves

Shaykh Saud Ash-Shuraym
Muharram 11, 1424 (March 14, 2003)

All praise is due to Allaah, Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings of Allaah, be upon the Messenger, his households and Companions.

Dear Muslims! I implore you and myself to fear Allaah. Let us hold tenaciously with His teachings and seek refuge with Him. For none answers the call of the distress but Him. Allaah says,

“And whatever of blessings and good things you have, it is from Allaah. Then, when harm touches you, unto Him you cry aloud for help.”

(An-Nahl 16:53)

Fellow Muslims! A quick comparison between Muslims of the early generations and Muslims of today will show a wide difference.

Yes! Contemporary Muslims wear neater garments, eat better food and ride better means of transportation but as far as spiritual qualities are concerned, we are far weaker than the earlier generation.

The Muslim Ummah of the earlier generation is the leader not the led, the pacesetter not the follower and the great not the weak. It was the nation of justice and equality and it had the paraphernalia of a kingdom and authority. It was never a weakling and never did it descend so low as to muddle up matters and not to have a clear goal, as is the case with the Muslims of today. Tragedies of the Muslims of today have reached a proportion where people demand that a worthless man be called a scholar; where ordinary driver is regarded an engineer and a barber regarded a physician. It is on account of this confused situation that the hardships of this Ummah increase so much so that its honour is desecrated by the enemy and the hearts of its members are filled with fear of their opponents. The have even become so weak that they now call to surrender and to recognize the injustices that are being committed against them, and they have started regarding their own truth as falsehood and falsehood of their enemies as the truth.

Brethren in faith! All this is the result of the defect and indolence that have eaten deep into the fabric of this Ummah after the voices of the sincere warners were neglected. It is however astonishing that the Muslims failed to realize the very reason of this sorry situation of theirs and they ask themselves of that though Allaah calls our attention to it in His Glorious Book when He says,

“It is from yourselves (because of your evil deeds).”

(Aal ‘Imraan 3:165)

It is well known that Allaah has made it upon Himself to give victory to His Messengers and friends. He says,

“Allaah has decreed: "Verily! It is I and My Messengers who shall be the victorious." Verily, Allaah is All-Powerful, All-Mighty.”

(Al-Mujaadilah 58:21)

He also says,

“And never will Allaah grant to the disbelievers a way (to triumph) over the believers.”

(An-Nisaa 4:141)

This promise cannot however materialize without conditions. Allaah has made the accomplishment of eemaan and all that it entails in every aspect of our life a precondition for materialization of this promise. That is the way of Allaah in His creation.

When the Muslims abandon the teachings of Islaam by neglecting whatever they like of these teaching and sidelining whatever they like, they are only inviting danger upon themselves, and woeful defeat will be the final consequence. Having brought the presence condition upon themselves, they should then face the consequences even though they are a Muslim nation. That does not make the way of Allaah change.

Fellow Muslims! We are living in these difficult days in the midst of heavy storms. It is therefore wise to prepare ourselves psychologically and physically to face these challenges and bravely and convincingly confront those who make unfounded allegations against Islaam and the Muslims. We should stop making useless comments that are devoid of any practical action to better our conditions. We should stop being – in the face of the enemy’s vicious allegations – like a mere feather that is blown by the wind to wherever it wants. Let us stop compromising on matters of our religion or parts of its values. Let us stop the enemies from casting doubts on the teachings of Islaam or attempting to convince us to review the contents of our educational system.

We should not however, do all this out of mere agitation so that we may not fall among those, whom Allaah describes as follows,

“And among mankind is he who worships Allaah as it were, upon the edge (i.e. in doubt): if good befalls him, he is content therewith; but if a trial befalls him, he turns back on his face (i.e. reverts back to disbelief after embracing Islaam). He loses both this world and the Hereafter. That is the evident loss.”

(Al-Hajj 22:11)

On account of this, we need to beware of two dangerously important things:

One: Condoning crazy campaigns being waged against our religion through casting doubt on some of it’s teachings or allowing non-Muslims to have a say in matters of our belief and in our educational systems. There is no doubt that any Muslim who assists the disbelievers in promoting their crooked views is a traitor of the highest order and the greatest criminal. Allaah describes such a person in the Qur’aan where He says,

“Verily, those who have turned back (have apostatized) as disbelievers after the guidance has been manifested to them - Satan has beautified for them (their false hopes), and (Allaah) prolonged their term (age). This is because they said to those who hate what Allaah has sent down: "We will obey you in part of the matter." But Allaah knows their secrets. Then how (will it be) when the angels will take their souls at death, smiting their faces and their backs? That is because they followed that which angered Allaah, and hated that which pleased Him. So He made their deeds fruitless.”

(Muhammad 47:25-28)

Imaam Ahmad reported on the authority of Jaabir that ‘Umar bin Al-Khattaab brought a which he got from some members of the People of the Book to the Messenger of Allaah and read it to him. The Prophet became angry and said among other things: “Surely, I have brought this religion to you as pure as it is. By Him in Whose hand is my soul! Had (Prophet) Moosaa been alive, he would not have had any option than to follow me.”

Dear brethren! You should beware of inclining to other creeds or of running away from the teachings of Islaam no matter how terrible the situation is. The Messenger of Allaah was authentically reported to have said that one of the believers who were before us would be brought with hacksaws and would be cut into two. Yet that would not turn him away from his religion.

In the history of the Companions of the Trench,[1] Their leader said: ‘If anyone of them turns back from his religion let him go, but if he holds fast unto it cast him into the fire.’ Then a woman came holding an infant and she was hesitant to be cast to fire. Her infant child told her: ‘Be patient mother. For you are on the truth.’

Two: We should beware lest the rank of the Muslims be penetrated or shaken from the enemies within. The enemies within are those people who belong to our tribes and speak our language. Wise Muslims know them by their words and Allaah knows what they do in secret. These people wade into issues on which they have no knowledge. Whenever there are crises, they seize the opportunity to cause confusion within Islaamic societies by muddling up issues and calling unto abandonment of Islaamic values.

In powerful countries, their ilk is regarded as the fifth column, which is avoided by all means. These people are more dangerous than outside enemies. For they carry out what is called war by proxy, because they know our language and our reality more than the foreigners. As a result, their evil effects are most deadly.

It is therefore strange that these people should continue to call themselves Muslims, though in all their sayings and writings they cast doubt on the credibility of Islaam and its educational system, demean the new blessed resurgence among the Muslim youth and malign the righteous men. They are like those Allaah describes as,

“Those (hypocrites) who wait and watch about you; if you gain a victory from Allaah, they say: "Were we not with you?" but if the disbelievers gain a success, they say (to them): "Did we not gain mastery over you and did we not protect you from the believers?”

(An-Nisaa 4:141)

Almighty Allaah has warned His Prophet against these people when He says,

“If the hypocrites, and those in whose hearts is a disease (evil desire for adultery), and those who spread false news among the people in Al-Madeenah stop not, We shall certainly let you overpower them: then they will not be able to stay in it as your neighbors but a little while. Accursed, they shall be seized wherever found, and killed with a (terrible) slaughter. That was the Way of Allaah in the case of those who passed away of old: and you will not find any change in the Way of Allaah.”

(Al-Ahzaab 33:60-62)

Ibn Katheer said: “This is the way of Allaah in dealing with the hypocrites. Whenever they insist on their hypocrisy and disbelief, and they refuse to abandon their wrongful path, Allaah makes the believers overpower them.”

We are now telling these people that the law they are waging war against is the law of Allaah and the path they are condemning is the path of Allaah in which there is crookedness. We are also informing them that in spite of their vicious attacks against Islaam, there are some Muslims who are always ready to defend this religion and all its values and teachings come what may. They are those referred to by Allaah in the following verse:

“And when the believers saw the Confederates, they said: "This is what Allaah and His Messenger (Muhammad (peace be upon him)) had promised us; and Allaah and His Messenger (Muhammad (peace be upon him)) had spoken the truth. And it only added to their faith and to their submissiveness (to Allaah). Among the believers are men who have been true to their covenant with Allaah (i.e. they have gone out for Jihaad (holy fighting), and showed not their backs to the disbelievers); of them some have fulfilled their obligations (i.e. have been martyred); and some of them are still waiting, but they have never changed (i.e. they never proved treacherous to their covenant which they concluded with Allaah) in the least. That Allaah may reward the men of truth for their truth (i.e. for their patience at the accomplishment of that which they covenanted with Allaah), and punish the hypocrites if He will or accept their repentance by turning to them (in Mercy). Verily, Allaah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

(Al-Ahzaab 33:22-24)

Fellow Muslims! In view of the changes that are occurring in our societies and the world around us, we are in dire need of holding fast unto the word that unites us together –Laa ilaaha illallaah Muhammad Rasoolullaah. Let us unite under the banner of this word and all the meanings it carries which include mutual love an affection, brotherhood, cooperation and peaceful coexistence.

Let us also realize that our backwardness was first and foremost caused by ourselves before there was any outside pressure. We must therefore exert all our efforts to propagate the Word of Allaah. We must make use of our culture to promote friendship and cooperation among us, support the Islaamic social values and clear the doubts that are raised about Islaam and its systems.

Our call to revive unity among Muslims should however be coupled by tangible efforts to eradicate slogans of the times of ignorance. We should present Islaam as the only source of unity among us not as the major source as it is done in many Muslim lands today.

It is through these efforts that we can be victorious over our enemies and our religion can prevail over all other systems and religions, for there is nothing after truth but error. Allaah says,

“Shall We treat those who believe and do righteous good deeds, as Mufsidoon (those who associate partners in worship with Allaah and commit crimes) on earth? Or shall We treat the pious, as the criminals? (This is) a Book (the Qur’aan) which We have sent down to you, full of blessings that they may ponder over its Verses, and that men of understanding may remember.”

(Saad 38:28)
