Keepers of The Medicine

A long time ago,an "Old Man" appeared at the edge of the Haudenshonni Village.
He was limping and had to use a stick to help him walk. His Buckskin clothes were dirty and ragged with many holes. and he looked very tired and sick. He came to a Bark covered Long House that had a Turtle Skull over the hide covered doorway. He knew he had reached the Dwelling of the Turtle Clan. An Old Woman was scraping a Deer skin nearby, so he asked her if she would give him something to eat and a place to rest for awhile. She looked up at this ragged and dirty Old Man and scowled. She told him to go away and that she had no food. So, the "Old Man"staggered away.
Soon he came to another Lodge that had the Skull of a Wolf over the doorway. As he approached a young Woman pulled back the skin covering the entrance and began yelling at him to go away. She began throwing sticks and stones at him so he ran away as fast as his old legs could carry him.
After awhile he came to a third Bark covered Lodge that had a Bear's Skull over the Doorway and he knew that it was the Home of the Bear Clan. As he approached, a Young Woman, who had been kneeling in front of the Fire Pit, came forward to greet him. "Kwe! Kwe! Doda." (Greetings Grandfather) "You don't look well." "Come inside and rest while I get you something to eat." She got him a bowl of Corn Soup from the Clay Pot that had been sitting on three stones near the Fire. When she took it to him, she saw that he was in pain and had a Fever.. In a weak voice, he asked her to go to the Brook nearby and and gather some Willow Bark. When she returned he told her to scrape off the inner layer from the Bark and steep it in hot water. After he had drunk the Tea, he began to feel better and the Fever broke.
But, almost immediately he began to have Stomach Pains. He sent the Young Woman to gather a certain Root from a small shrub that only grows on the Northern side of the Mountains. When she returned, he had her cut the Root into small pieces and Boil it to make a Tea which took away his Stomach Cramps.
Each time she cured him of one Sickness, He immediately contracted another and so on until she had learned all the Cures for the common ailments of the Onkwehonwe. (Real People)
As she opened the Doorway Flap the last time, there was a Bright Light illuminating a Handsome Young Man standing there. He said to her," Please don't be afraid. I am Shonkwaiiatison ( The Maker of Our Bodies). Since you have been so kind and helpful to me, from this day forward, all the Medicine Men and Women, of the Onkwehonwe, shall be members of the Bear Clan.
...And so it is to this Day...
Hi all, Sorry I have been so long in between posts, but we have been busy, busy, busy around here...lol The bench is a new addition I was gifted with, and it didn't take us long to find a good spot for it..lol right between our prairie garden and our veggie garden, good place to take a break and watch things grow this spring.. or just for a coffee break...lol We have had a couple of nice days here and took full advantage of them. The green house is doing great, With all kinds of goodies growing and loving the sun and warmth. I had Coy fix me up some places for my hanging pots, And he went ahead and put a shelf in too. So there's not a spot inside there that doesn't have something growing..woohoo...lol
I do love spending time out in the green house. I know I say it every time.. But there's just nothing like it to me. I get out there, and just get lost in my own little world...lol Lately I have been doing temperature checks on the pots and beds in the green house. As many things have to be at the right temps to germinate. Not to mention moisture and humidity So I'm keeping records and will do a blog on just that soon. Tomorrow if its raining...lol
here's a picture of Coy's Choi showing up..lol He cooks some great Asian goodies and this is a must...lol I could show you all kinds of pictures of the goodies growing but I guess you get the idea. Some of it is not growing fast enough for me.. I can't wait much longer on my fresh lettuce. lol And you wouldn't believe how well our onions in our little solar box are doing.
As things go crazy all over the country today... We were blessed with new babies. They started hatching last night. And they are the cutest little things. They had everybody in an uproar last night...even the dogs were walking around seemingly worried as they listened to the little pips coming from the box...lol And don't let that ole Coy fool you..lol He got very little sleep last night. He was up and down all night checking on his babies.. Sometime early this morning he decided that they would be fine and finally got some rest. First thing out of his mouth this morning was "we have nine new babies" and as of this post. WE HAVE 11...lol And Wednesday we should have bunnies.. Now that's balance! And that's as Indian as it gets.
I got this off of Coy Dog's page.. Thought you might like to see it. Coy calls it Karen's Damn Portable Green House...lol |
One of the major issues for many gardeners is available space. But everyone that gardens even on the smallest scale wants a little greenhouse and my little sister Karen needed herself one. It wasn't fair that Braveheart had two big ones and she had notta. Well that's all changed and this is how she got there.
First start out with a 10 feet long 1"X4" broad. cut two pieces 21 1/2 inches long.
then cut two pieces 35 3/4 inches long
NOW _ listen close. Most lumber yards will cut to size...ASK DAMN IT.
Next you need your bottom piece. normally you can get a 1/4" think piece of plywood that comes 24x38 inches...you need it cut to 36X23 INCHES
Now for the small pieces :
(3) 1/2 x1/2 inch -12 inches long (for the front)
(3) 1/2x1/2 inch - 15 inches long (for the back)
(2) 1"x2" - 35 3/4 inches long for top front and back.
pre-drill all your holes for screwing - use 1 1/4 inch wood screws
SO WHEN I GOT READY TO BEGIN ALL THE HOLES ARE PRE-DRILLED , ALL I NEED IS A PHILLIPS HEAD SCREW DRIVER OR ELECTRIC DRILL.
AS YOU STUDY THE FRAME DESIGN, YOU CAN SEE WHERE TO PRE DRILL. IF YOU ORDER ONE FROM ME - ITS ALL PREDRILLED .
KAREN'S DAMN GREENHOUSE WILL HOLD THREE PLASTIC TRAYS BUT YOU DON'T NEED THEM. ITS HIGH SO PLANTS LIKE TOMATOES AND PEPPERS TO FLOWERS GET NICE START. THROW 4 INCHES OF DIRT DOWN AND GROW LETTUCE OR RADISHES WITH THIS LITTLE BABE - ITS ENDLESS. THE FINISHED SIDE FOR GROWING IS 12" HIGH ; 24X36 ...
THERE YOU GO KAREN ....SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED . YOU PAY FOR THE SHIPPING AND PLASTIC IS OPTIONAL. . MEANING YOU SUPPLY YOUR PLASTIC .
you can use it in front of a window indoors or your little patio, outdoors. On cold nights bring it indoors. a real space saver for getting a early jump on that garden
Nothing about this winter has seemed normal, every season just a little worse. But with the seasons some people are waking up. For many years I believed that in America , if we have a good change of correcting environmental damage it must be addressed from the pulpit. That a Nation calling itself Christian must stop looking for a new heaven and earth and start making this gift heaven on earth for future generations. For all the eyes looking deep into space like never before, nothing comes close to this planet. Its all we have. And if we can turn it around it must start now and at home. We're all we have and what we can control. But to start they must begin with baby steps. It starts with our thinking.
The problems are enormous and none of the solutions simple. But most are conscious that unless there's action, the planet may solve the problem -- by simply making it impossible for people to live on it.
It doesn’t really matter if you like what CoyDog says or not, or if you believe that humans cause global warming or not. What matters is that we are beginning to understand that we all live on planet Earth. We all breathe the same air and we drink the same water that is circulated and filtered through a global cycle of rain and evaporation. It is not Earth that is in the balance. The Earth can and will continue on without us. It is you and I – and the rest of humanity -- who are in the balance.
Today , we use the internet , run across town, do all the things adults do. But it started with baby steps. Gardening , yard composting are simple things. It starts with the first step.
Here is a nifty and inexpensive way to get your seeds started indoor this winter. All you need is a car
dboard box, a roll of tin foil, some potting soil, and a white kitchen trash bag. Our box we are using here is 12" x 15"
Take your cardboard box and cut it to the height that you want then cut it at an angle. we cut this one to about 61/2" in the front, with the height about 12" in the back.
Line the inside of your box with tin foil. making sure you have the bottom of your box lined well so when you water the bottom of the box doesn't get wet. fold the edges over the top so you get a nice fit. If you need to tape it down, No worrying about it being pretty..lol The plants won't care. We are using the tim foil because it will reflect all kinds of light. So you can set it in a sunny window, put in on your patio, or balcony any where it can get some sun during the day.
Now that you have that done. Just fill it with your potting soil. Ours is about 31/2" deep. But it will depend on what you plan on starting in yours. We are going to plant radishes in ours. We are also using potting soil because it is light weight and stays moist with out lots of water. Now plant your seeds. you can do some little rows or how ever you choose.
As you can see here we are using a kitchen trash bag for the top to keep the warmth in. this little box will be a great way to get some lettuce started, or good for starting those patio tomatoes, just make sure you have enough height for the plants as they get taller. Then when they are ready just transplant to a bigger pot or plant outside in your yard. No need for those expensive set ups to get some seeds started.. enjoy..and lets grow something...lol if you use this little set up here let us know, we love hearing from others who garden..lol
