THE SMILES OF TINY CHILDREN
1- When we see the smiles of tiny children, it is easy to regard them as innocents. But a baby is not born with a clean slate. He comes into this world with the onus of past actions still upon him, his account on this plane still unsettled. His soul, which is eternal, cannot be new, but he receives a new body - the apparatus for earthly existence - that is tailored to fit. His body, together with his heredity and environment, is precisely suited to carry out the fate allotted to this incarnation by the lord of karma. ( pp 149 )
2- Almost from the first breath, infants begin to demonstrate a distinct individuality, showing the strongest character trends even in the bud. These variations of character are part of their heritage - their stars. They are the result of karmas accumulated over the long ages, providing such infinite variety that no two people are alike. ( pp 149 )
3- We must regard this life as only one episode in a long saga. One's present situation, whether it be at the dizzy heights of success or the depths of despondency, should be regarded as part of a continuum in which one has played both hero and villain, swayed by his own wishes and desires. ( pp 151 )
4- Once started on the Path, we go on at our own pace according to our zeal and fervour for God-realization, and the debts of karma which we still have to discharge. ( pp 152 )
