Probably lots of funny concert experiences and random thoughts.

GN'R is Back!!
GN'R is Back!! magnify

Saw Guns N' Roses in San Francisco last night...well actually Axl and a whole lot of other guys.  However, the "other guys" can play their asses off.  So, don't let the lack of Slash, Duff, Izzy, etc be a deterrent from seeing the current incarnation of the band.  Axl was in fine form, doing his snake dance, running around the stage, and pretty much hitting every note for 2 1/2 hours!  Say what you want about Axl (most of it true), he's still a genuine rock star.  Not like those lamers from Tommy Lee's NotsoSupernova.

Now for the fun stuff that has nothing to do with the show per-se.  First off, if you go to a GN'R show, don't expect the show to start at the time stated. 8pm, means 10pm or later in Axl-time.  My buddy and I arrived at the Warfield at around 7:30 (doors were supposed to open at 7) .  Uh no, the doors didn't open until 9 because Axl was sound-checking. Therefore, the line to get into the Warfield wrapped around from Market Street to the Tenderloin.  If you haven't experienced the Tenderloin...well, you'd have to see it to believe.  Major crackheads, hookers, the smell of pee in the air wherever you walk, etc.  We literally saw people smoking crack.  I guess they didn't get the crack-is-whack memo.

Funny moment:  Guy comes up to me saying we have this mental bond. Ok, I'll bite.  He's thinking that I'm going to give him 75 cents.  I told him I was thinking the same thing, except it was 75 cents less than what he was thinking.  That seemed to bum him out.  I told him to rest assure, the guy urinating on the car a few feet from us probably had more of a common bond with him than I did and that he's loaded. (I left the term loaded purposely vague).

Never in my life have I stood willingly in a place that smelled like pee for as long as we did.  However, I'm still going to the second show tonight. Gotta love Rock N Roll!

Set list:

01. Welcome To The Jungle
02. It's So Easy
03. Mr Browstone
04. Live and Let Die
05. Robin Finck Solo

UPDATE: Went to the Thursday show. This time in the pit about 10 feet from the stage.  Axl stopped the show 3 times to kick out jackasses.  Sort of funny.  The band adds Rocket Queen & Used to Love Her to the set.  Show ends at 2am.  Cool moment, we go to the back of the theater to get some air and about 10 feet away stood Scott Ian (Anthrax), Robert Trujilio (Metallica, Ozzy), and Whitfield Crane (Ugly Kid Joe).  Got to shake Scott Ian's hand, cool guy.

Video of Axl kicking out a guy during Sweet Child o Mine.

Welcome Back Axl!
Welcome Back Axl! magnify

If you haven't heard the latest about good 'ole Axl Rose, he was just arrested for biting a security guard at a party while touring in Sweeden.  Read it for yourself here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060627/ap_en_ce/axl_rose_15

This is hilarious stuff.  With stories like this, one must read the wonderful Yahoo! Message Boards.  Here are some highlights:

VH1 Rock Honors
VH1 Rock Honors magnify

Just got through watching VH1's Rock Honor Awards.  I must admit it was pretty entertaining, but I'm a hard rock/metal nut so I'm a tad bit biased.  Here's a breakdown for those that are debating whether or not to TIVO this!

Host: Jamie Pressley.  Ok, she's hot, I suppose, but seriously useless as a host.  The more she appeared on stage the more I cringed at her obvious teleprompter reading.  By the end of the night I was convinced one of her parents must have been a duck. Don't believe me?  Check out some of her recent photos.

Queen:

The Foo Fighters did Tie Your Mother Down. Awesome!  Not a big Foo Fighters fan, but this was a great rendition. Plus, Brian May jumped on stage with them.

As for "Queen", nothing will ever beat them with Freddie Mercury, but Paul Rodgers is a rock legend in his own right and did a fabulous job on The Show Must Go On and We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions. Great start to the show.

Judas Priest:

Godsmack did a terrific medley of Electric Eye, the melodic part of Victim of Changes, and Hell Bent for Leather.  I wasn't sure how they were going to pull off Priest, but they did perfectly!

As for the mighty Judas Priest, they always deliver the goods. Great reditions of Breaking the Law and You've Got Another Thing Coming.  Rob Halford will always be the Metal God!  And he even came out on the Harley.

Def Leppard:

The All-American Rejects (apt name for this shitty band) detroyed Photograph.  Even the audience in the front row were barely into it.  And usually those front row TV crowds are into everything!  Just awful sounding.  The guitar player looked like he was going to crap his pants doing the solo.

I love Def Leppard, but Joe Elliot can't hit any high notes anymore.  The band sounded pretty good for Rock of Ages, but the vocals just weren't cutting it.  They even had back-up singers! WTF??  Hard rock band with back-up singers? Sad.  Just goes to show what a great producer Mutt Lange was to layer the vocals on Pyromania & Hysteria.  Then the band did a cover of T-Rex's 21st Century Boy.  This was much better than their own song!  Lower vocals suit Joe Elliot better these days.

Kiss:

Tommy Lee, Scott Ian, Rob Zombie, Slash, Gilby Clarke, and Ace Frehley peformed God of Thunder.  THIS PERFORMANCE MADE THE WHOLE SHOW!  To watch Slash & Ace Frehley trade guitar licks was awesome!  And Rob Zombie's voice was meant to sing God of Thunder.

What can you say about Kiss?  Love 'em or hate 'em, you know a Kiss song.  I don't love Kiss as much as I did as a kid, but they're still entertaining and they do a typical Kiss performance of Detroit Rock City and Love Gun.  Lots of pyro and lights.

Kudos to VH1 for still playing and acknowledging hard rock music!
