This is the life of a man from South Louisiana. I love life and am learning how to value it more each day.
The Al Briede 3 mile and 1 mile race took place today. Mr. Al was a president and founder of the New Orleans Track Club. He told me he was 87 years old. He did the 1 mile. I hope to be able to do a mile when I am 87, Wait. That is only 34 years from tomorrow. He looked great when he came in.
The 3 miler took place in City Park, following the same path it had in previous years. The last mile will drain you if you are not ready. The last mile crosses 2 small bridges which would be considered hills in flat Louisiana and is completely in the sun. The rest of the race is mostly in the shade of the oak trees at City Park.
I had 3 goals at this race. One goal I thought was impossible. There were 5 racewalkers in my age group. I did not think I could beat any oneof them but I would do my best. I especially did not think I could beat a particular one who was a challenge to me for a long time. The other two goals I might be able to achive. One was beating Del who bragged he beat me last time. The other was to beat 50 minutes on the 3 mile course.
I took off right behind Del. I saw him most of the way on the first mile which was partially an out and back. I saw Mary on top of the pace truck. She had my camera taking pictures. On the second mile, I no longer saw Del. He was way ahead of me and I never saw him again.
I did see one of the race walkers who I was wanting to beat when I turned a corner. He was behind me and was one I had often wanted to beat. I put on the speed and every time I thought about the sun beating down on me I just went faster. I knew that once I finished I could get more water then the two bottles I had brought with me. No one else carried water but I did so I would not get dehydrated.
At the end of the race, I had beat that racewalker and finished in 47:31. This means I beat 2 goals. Now it is time to prepare for the next race. Oh yes, the goodies after wards were jambalaya, beer, Chee Wees, water, and soda. I only took nothing because I knew I was coming home to celebrate my birthday.
The Grand Prix Series is about to get up and running or walking. It is time to get ready for all of the races that make up this series. One of the first races in the series that I enjoy for its beauty in the area it occurs is the Run On The Bayou. There could be no food and no drink afterwards and this race would still be a good race.
This race has a good looking shirt which is one of the first things I notice about races. The shirt normally features a comical alligator. The alligator often has a shoe in its mouth. No it is not a crocodile. Crocodiles are not native to Louisiana. It is an alligator which is one of the many animals you may not see on Bayou Segnette but it is an animal that is local to the area.
Before the race, there is normally the National Anthem sung by a local person. This is something a lot of other areas in our country do not perform. We almost always have the National Anthem at our races in order to start it. It is not often sung though. It is usually recorded.
Speaking of records, it would be easy to set a personal record here for the 5 or 1 ½ miles or ½ mile. Most races are not 5 miles. The usual races are either 5k or 10k. But this race is not a usual race.
No, this is not a usual race at all. It is much better. It is a chance to surround yourself in the woods of Bayou Segnette. If you get out on the 5 miler, you have the opportunity to follow the Bayou for a while. If you take the 1 ½ miler, you will cross a couple of bridges and see the water ways there while you also have the beauty of woods around you. Remember the longer the run or walk you talk, the more beauty you will see.
But don’t take too long out there, at the end of the race, like at the end of all NOTC races, there is a party and a chance to celebrate. At the festivities will be the following food and drink: Lite beer by Miller, Miller Genuine draft 64, Pepsi Cola, Diet Pepsi, Sierra Mist, red beans and rice, Elmer’s Chee Wees, bananas, and Barbe’s Dairy.
Of course, all of this good food and drink will be accompanied by fun and an award ceremony. You even have a chance to dance after the music or sit by the nearby lagoon to either bird watch, take photos, or whatever.
Register now, wait until race day and register, volunteer, or cheer the racers on but don’t miss out on this race. It is one of the best that NOTC has to offer. If you live in the New Orleans area and don’t make this race, then you are just not living life
As the only brother of four sisters, most of my life I have been faced with this is girl's talk, bug out. Well, yesterday I went to a baby shower, usually a girls thing. I enjoyed it big time. It was great. I saw my neice get lots of present and we played games such as having to name nursery rhyme characters based on clues.
Today, I substituted in P.E. and learned from a fast marathoner, a little over 3 hours fast, that you can be in the back of the pack or the front and get the same enjoyment and applause. He ran a 5 hour + marathon and learned that and talked with me about it.
I also walked the dogs today and Tarzan broke his leash when he was after another dog. After walking the dogs, I did a 3 miler and felt bad about being slow. During the 3 miler, I saw a person in a wheel chair who could barely move. I felt great about getting around and will get around even faster once I get some weight off. I need to be more persistant in getting out there and getting the job done.
On a cloudy morning with street light lit streets, Patches and I went out to race walk three miles. The firs thing I noticed was it was a little cool. I continued on even though I was only wearing shorts and singlet. Once I got to moving my back hurt me on my first mile. When does pain tell you to stop and when do you know to work it through the pain? I don't know but I know I went on and saw Patches following. He would have been ahead of me but he is not sure of my path on Mom's neighborhood since I only took him a few times out here where we have lived since that ugly lady, Katrina, came to town.
Patches and I saw a friend of mine taking off to work and told him good morning. On the second mile or block, my back felt better and I heard what I thought was rain. It was only the leaves blowing in the trees.
On the third mile, I noticed the time was 5:45. I needed to get back for 6 o'clock so I went fast on the third mile. I started to notice the wind really blowing and the tree's leaves rustling in the wind. Well, I knew rain was upon us. At the 1/2 point of the third mile, the rain hit us. Gutters filled with water quickly. It was like a bunch of mini streams going along the sides of the street. In some places the stream was wider then others. That was due to trash blocking the street's gutter. When we got back, I fed Patches and Tarzan who did not go with me because he does not listen to me when I tell him what to do. Oh well, Patches and I enjoyed the walk and adventure. Tarzan, Patches, and I enjoyed our breakfast. I had orange juice and a slice of bread with margerine on it.
