A series of my traveling journal to & in Phnom Penh, from 9th June 2007 until 30th June 2007. All on the good, bad and ugly… from my eyes!!
At about 10:05AM, I heard the announcement, calling passengers to Phnom Penh to proceed for departure gate. All the passengers at the departure hall start moving toward the gate. We are the only group left after the passengers to Bangkok had left for Bangkok by Thai Airlines QV414 an hour earlier then us.
At the apron, I managed to snaps few photos of myself using my mobile phone (cell phone) with the background of the craft, just as remembrance - for my very first time traveling with Vietnam Airlines! A western woman, whom I knew at the departure hall while waiting for the flight, walked near me and asked me a favor in helping her for few shots, with her travel component. Both of them are going to Phnom Penh too.
Vietnam Airlines, Fokker 70
This is a very small craft, with the maximum seats of less then 60. No wonder, the flight is always full and sometime, someone even needs to wait for two to three days for seat confirmation. I think, I am a bit ‘lucky’ because, I got the confirmation yesterday itself and without needed to wait. It was the only seat available! For this flight, all seats have been taken-up as well. Hopefully, one day, Vietnam Airlines will stop using Fokker 70 on their international route and replace with a bigger craft since the demand are very encouraging.
Inside the aircraft - like 'sardine'!!
I was issued a window seat. Actually, it’s not a matter at all, either to be at window seat or sideway but, if there is a choice, I still prefer to be at the window. It is not because, it is not be more easy for me to jump-out if there is a hijack (LOL!!) but, I feel of ‘self-privacy’. I will feel ‘disturbance’ if someone walking up and down while I am taking a nap or reading a magazine. I will be more annoyed if a trolley parked right beside me when the steward or stewardess are serving meals to passengers! Normally, they should park the trolley at between of two seats. Anyway, below is the view direct from my seat…
View from the outer window at my seat.
LOLOL!! I am seating just next to the airplane’s fan!! LOL!! Never mind… I know, there is nothing much to see out there but cloud, jungle and paddy fields! I have enjoyed my flight very much even with this ‘huge thingy’ beside me, and his inner built-in ‘eeeeeeeerr’ melody, for the next 1 hour and 40 minutes…
This is the in-flight built-in I-Pod!!
Just after the light on ‘fasten seat belt’ sign was off, the on-board staff starts get busy in preparing our so-called ‘lunch’. There are only three on-board staff – two stewardess and a steward. Only two of them are serving the passenger and another one preparing the foods. I noticed that, all the foods were kept in front of the craft. Normally, on boeing, foods are kept at the back of the craft. Anyway, have learned something now! On my return flight, I will ask for the front seat (rather then the back seat as I am now) so that, I will get my foods first!! LOL!! Just a joke – they are very efficient and I got my lunch pack without really needs to wait for long!!
The Steward & Stewardess
The main dish – beef with yellow noodle. I have no comment on the food but if I am the airlines personal, I will prefer to serve Vietnamese foods for the passengers. As the country flag carrier air-craft, they should bring forward more on their country’s identity! They are many good and delicious Vietnamese foods available and among my favorite is ‘Nam Ne’rang’ or ‘White spring-Roll’. Another thing I noticed that, they serves foreign beer on flight. Why don’t they introduce their local beer, as such “555 Beer”, which is the most famous beer in Vietnam?? The beer is great too! Maybe, they are on “brand chasing” or trying to give ‘the best and the famous brand’ to the passengers! Well, not for me to comment at all… One thing I am very sure, if they serve local products, beside as a country identity, it will also introduce the goods/foods to the foreigners or visitors whom may be visiting their country for the first time! At the other hand, indirectly, it may serves as a good introduction to the foreigner on their local products/foods and also at the same time helping to boost their local industries and productions. The customer will not return just because of the ‘famous beer’ served, during on board!!
Just after I finished off my meal and filled-up the immigration form given, the captain made an announcement, that we are about to land at the Pochentong International Airport. I am quite excited! I am exciting not because, I will be reaching Phnom Penh but because of my old memories!! This will be the second time for me to step on this airport!
Suddenly, my old friends appeared in my mind. Mr Franchis, Mr Halil and Mr Liew seems sitting next to me! Mr Franchis is from the Construction Department while the other two were from the Drafting Department. Four of us are among the pioneers been ‘exported’ to Laos to develop a resort and casino. I have lost in touch with all of them except Mr Liew who is now is a ‘big boss’ with his own business in Malaysia. Poor me, still straggling here for life… sob, sob…!!
I smiled! Time seems fly away so fast leaving us!! We were all here on 1st January 1998, on the transit from Kuala Lumpur to Vientiane (Laos). Then, we all spent almost 3 hours in the airport because of some technical problems with the plane before continue our journey to Vientiane.
After the plane landed, I peek a look at the windows and searching for the airport. I can’t find the airport – the airport of 10 years ago! Wow!! It changed! It’s a big airport now. May be tenthlytimes much bigger in size, to the airport, which I used to know before! Amazing… I hurry to get ready, for my next new ‘exploration’ and new experiences…than hereafter...
"Have a nice weekend...!!"

A series of my traveling journal to & in Phnom Penh, from 9th June 2007 until tentatively 28th June 2007. All on the good, bad and ugly… from my eyes!!
As early as 4:30AM, I’m already awaked; automatically! Its not means, I am neither too anxious nor too worries, or either too excited on this trip but, I used to be a light sleeper on the day before any of my traveling departure day, especially if I travel in the morning. It’s happened all these while, even if I am travel domestically.
I should check-in at least two hours before my departure time which is not later then 8:10AM. I know, It’s not really necessary, needs to be there as early as 2 hours before, but, I used to do so on every flights if been requested. Furthermore, on this ‘extra ordinary case’ I got to ‘play save’! My other boss, Mr. N, called from Phnom Penh last night to remind me to check in the earliest so that, if I face any problem, I just call to Mr. R in Phnom Penh where he will make a follow-up call to the airport immigration. Mr. N assured me that Mr. R already had all the arrangements done for me!
After taking my bath, I still have plenty of time and watching CNN as what I usually did in the morning. At 7AM, I got down to the hotel coffee house to have my breakfast and reading the local newspaper. I planned to go to the airport only at 7:40AM because I know, 30 minutes time of journey to the airport from the hotel, which took about 5KM is sufficient enough!
Finally, I arrived at the airport and the check-in counter for Phnom Penh is still closed. The airport was full with passengers busy checking in for the flight to Bangkok; the second flight of the day after Lao Aviation to Hanoi as early at 4:30AM. The Vietnam Airlines only open its counter at 8:20AM, 10 minutes late as it supposed to!
Just with two begs, with ease, I got to the check-in counter after got my other bag scanned. I was the third person in the queue. Without having time to think much on the silly things; to scare my own self off on what might be happened at me at the check-in counter, within seconds after I joined the queue, the other on-duty officer open the next counter and waved me over.
I pay my attention on his reaction, after wishing him ‘Sabaidee’ (means ‘Hello’)! As he took my passport, by looking at my passport (not even open it), his eyes turn for ‘something’ that ‘hidden’ inside the check-in counter. Then, he flicks thru my passport pages and searching for my Multiply Business Visa, which was at my last page. While he was reading on it, without being ask, I told him that, my Foreign ID card and Working Permit together with the officer receipt from the Malaysian Embassy on my passport renewal (as a proof of my passport had been sent for renewal), were kept in the inner packet of my passport jacket. Without looking at me, he then reached for the said documents and check for the validity date. After the checking, then only he turned to my passport main page for my passport expiry date, just for a glance, and put everything aside!!
By then, he put up his head and looked at me and asked, “Do you prefer a window seat or a non-window seat, sir?” Ohhhh… I got a big relief!! “Anything will do”, I replied… “as long as you allowed me on-board”, whispered me in my heart!! Then, he checks my name off and print my boarding pass and the luggage tag. All the process took about five minutes only! I got a very smooth check-in and not at all as those silly though of mine before this. The boarding pass is out and with me now… Yes, my name is printed there without any spelling mistake!! LOL!!
While walking to the counter to pay for the airport tax, I managed to have a very short chat with two immigration officers on duty, which I know them but not very close. They were the one who had occupied my mind for a short chat during I sent my bag for scanning before the check-in!
US$10.00 for the airport tax. It’s relatively cheap, compare to other airports! Without hanging around further, I straight went up to gets my passport stamp and to wait at the boarding/departure hall. Thing gets smoothly… I just jump over to the “ASEAN Passport Holders Only” counter, from the queue where I was, after I noticed the sign, which is at the other ends. I am the only one there at that moment…
“Good morning, officer!” I give him my wish, in local language – just to ‘test’ how is his ‘mood’ in that morning! He put up his head with a big smile and wishing me for the same! “Positive!!” My heart said! It’s the right time to ask questions!!
As the same happened in the check-in counter earlier before these, he took all my documents and checking thru on the documents’ expiry date and then put them back to the packet where he took them from. After my passport stamped, I took the opportunity from his ‘good mood’ to ask him on my ‘problem’ where he said, it should be ‘ok’ to re-enter to Laos because of my supportive documents that’s helps, even my passport validity is less then the minimum requirement. The whole process just took me for about three minutes… Another big relief for me…!!
Departure Hall at Wattay International Airport, Vientiane, Laos
The departure hall is quite ‘empty’! This is because, the departure time for both destinations, Bangkok and Phnom Penh is still early. Many people prefer to ‘hang around’ at the airport rather then at the departure hall. Wattay International Airport is just a very small airport and only has 2 or 3 duty-free outlets to shop and one-and-the-only-one café corner for the guests, in where, the place I fully utilized, to kill the rest of my time. With my favorite ‘Cafe Lotte’, I spend the rest of hours there, while waiting for boarding at 10:10AM.
Left: One of the duty-free outlets. Right: The cafe corner at the departure hall
Not forgotten, I then SMS to my boss, Mr. R in Phnom Penh informing him that, everything went smoothly and to thanks him for his helping hands and are looking forward in meeting him soon in Phnom Penh!! Besides spending my time by enjoying my favorite drink, I also utilized the time on “Dewan Masyarakat”, a Malaysia magazine, which I took from the Malaysian Embassy few days ago. I told myself, I got to read more in Malays else, I will easily get forgotten the language since I am seldom use it here, especially if I am not using it for a very long time…
(to be continue…)
"Have a nice beautiful new week...!!"
