Entry for September 22, 2008

I signed up for updates from Nine Inch Nails (NIN) a while back because they were giving away one of their albums (Ghosts I of Ghosts I-IV, I believe) and I just got an email from Trent today. I find it funny to see Trent using "pwn3d" in an email. :) I think I will skip the date with Jeordie White whether or not condoms are supplied- thanks anyways!

Message from Trent:

Hello everyone.
I'd like to thank everyone for a very successful year so far in the world of Nine Inch Nails. I'm enjoying my couple of weeks off between legs of our Lights In The Sky tour and got to thinking... "wouldn't it be fun to send out a survey to everyone that's shown interest in NIN?" Well, that's not exactly how it went, but regardless - here it is. As we've moved from the familiar world of record labels and BS into the unknown world of doing everything yourself, we've realized it would benefit us and our ability to interact with you if we knew more about what you want, what you like, what you look like naked, etc. I know it's a pain in the ass but we'd truly appreciate it if you'd take a minute and help us out. As an incentive, everyone who completes the survey will be able to download a video of live performance from this most recent tour (and I know what's going through your little minds right now: "I'll just grab this off a torrent site and not have to fill out the survey!!!" and guess what? You will be able to do just that and BEAT THE SYSTEM!!!! NIN=pwn3d!!!)
BUT
What if we were to select some of those that DO complete the survey and provide them with something really cool? I'm not saying we'll ever get around to it, but if we did maybe something like signed stuff, flying someone to a show somewhere in the world, a magic amulet that makes you invisible, a date with Jeordie White (condoms supplied of course), you know - something cool. See, you'd miss that opportunity AND be a cheater.
Do the right thing - help us out. You'll feel better.

Thank you and I've had too much caffeine this morning,
Trent

Social Security Number To Make A Doctor Appointment
Why, oh why, do I need to give out my social security number in order to get an appointment with a doctor? The lady on the phone, Stacey, told me that 'the computer requires it'. Long story short, I talked to her manager that repeated the same stupid line. BTW, I have insurance and an insurance number that I was willing to give out - oh, and they only really needed the last 4 of my SSN but the software required the full thing. I asked if I could give a fake first five. How well did that idea go over? I am looking for a different doctor. :)

What is it with companies wanting all this information? A lawyer that I was looking at hiring wanted my SSN. I didn't put it down on the paper that he had me fill out and he never bothered me about it again. I didn't go with him but at least he didn't bug me about that.

I think I am getting crankier with age. :)

Glenn Beck and Christian Rap
I happen to catch something for the first time in a song I have heard 10s of times. The song title is 'Make Room' and the group that performs it is the Christian Rap group 'Grits'. At the beginning of the song is what sounds like a audio clip from one of Glenn Beck's radio show broadcasts.

The text of what I believe to be Glenn Beck audio is "That's when you know a group is hip. Is when you're parents say 'What is it with the hippie, the hip-hip-hippie glows(?), and you can't understand a word they're saying!'".

Cell Phone I Want
Cell Phone I Want magnify
Found the phone I want but will never get, the Nokia N93. Besides being a cell phone it is also a camcorder and 3.2 mega pixel camera. Oh, and the cost is $699.99 and isn't officially supported in the US, yet.

MS Windows Computer Security, June 29, 2006
Got some suggested security programs for people to load on their MS Windows non-server computers. The best part of these programs is that they are all free!

Programs that actively monitor your computer:
1. Windows Defender (BETA 2) - FREE - http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Helps keep spyware at bay - this is unlike the free version of Ad-Aware and SpyBot Search & Destroy that remove already installed spyware. Windows Defender keeps the spyware from installing.
Beginner level program.

2. AVG Anti-virus - FREE - http://free.grisoft.com/
Good anti-virus software that doesn't require you to jump through too many hoops to get it. Beginner to Intermediate level program.

Programs that you have to run:
1.  Lavasoft Ad-aware Personal Edition - FREE - http://lavasoft.com/software/adaware/
The free version of Lavasoft's Ad-aware that removes spyware that has already infected your computer.
Beginner level program.

2. Spybot Search & Destroy - FREE - http://www.safer-networking.org/
Another free spyware remover. This program finds some spyware that Ad-aware doesn't. Use both of them together to clean an infected computer.
Beginner to Intermediate level program

3. HijackThis - FREE - http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip
Spyware removal program, specifically removes spyware that imbeds itself into Internet Explorer. Becareful with this program as you could accidently remove Internet Explorer add-ons that you might want, like the Google or Yahoo! toolbars. This is because Hijackthis shows you everything that is installed, not just the bad stuff. Visit the forums for help.
Advanced level program.
