My view on random things I find on the web.
So i finally got around to posting new photos on Flickr of my bathroom remodel.

After today, the walls and floors will be tiled, yay! The process has taken over 1 month now, but its finally coming together...
I just put up a new blog here: http://www.scottgatz.com/
My 360 blog (you are reading it right now) is really meant for friends and family and I'll continue to update people on my travels, my house and other things I want to share amongst friends.
The new blog is focused on a broader audience and is a new thing for me: actually writing expecting that strangers might read it. Check out my first post to see more about what I'm thinking.
First day: Friday Aug 5
Our backyard had an old unused concrete foundation for what I think must have been an old deck. It basically cut the yard in half and was about 6 inches tall, just enough to trip over all of the time and just enough to be in the way as I re-did this patio.
So I got to use a jackhammer for the first time in my life!! I used the above pictured jackhammer and in about 2 hours, the concrete foundation was gone and I had a pile of chunks of concrete (see here). Now there's just a trench where the foundation was (picture).
Once that was done, Craig and I headed up to San Rafael to buy around 350 used bricks. I was incredibly sore for the next few days, I guess lifting bricks and jackhammering is a lot harder than I thought.
Next up: removing the old bricks
In San Francisco, our house sits on an odd hill that makes our backyard exist two stories below our kitchen. In the 1980s, the owners built a nice deck outside of the kitchen that basically covers most of the backyard. That left an interesting "fern garden" 13 feet underneath the deck. Half of the backyard below was covered in gravel, the other half is covered by garden space and a brick patio. Over the years, the brick patio has settled and it is completely uneven, water pools up in it and algae and plants grow within it.
So, I got it into my head that I would (without professional help) replace the old brick patio and enlarge it to cover the space that was previously covered in gravel. So, over the next few weeks you'll be able to watch my progress here and here. The above photo is the "before" picture. Hopefully, I'll be able to complete the project so that there actually is an "after" photo.
