Buyer Beware

If you do not know anyone in real life who has a Nintendo DS system and the Animal Crossing Wild World game to share Friend Codes with you - you CANNOT play Animal Crossing Wild World online at all UNLESS you find someone somehow with a Friend Code to share with you.

The game box DOES NOT say - “Game Intended for Two to Four Real Life Friends / Family Members to Share Friend Codes to Play Game on the Internet”.

The back of the game box DOES say and I quote:

“Visit friends near and far over local wireless or the Internet”

How is any consumer supposed to know BEFORE buying and opening the game - $35 plus tax (and possibly like me, a $40 plus tax Nintendo USB WiFi Connector since I do not have a wireless router) to specifically play this game on the Internet and then contacting Nintendo Customer Service after trying to play it online and cannot?

The system, the game and the USB Connector are non-returnable to the store at this point - they’ve been opened and they are not defective.

Nintendo’s recommended solution for me?

Buy a DS system and Animal Crossing Wild World game for my grandson and exchange Friend Codes with him so I can play Animal Crossing Wild World online OR buy a different WiFi game to play online that does not require a Friend Code to play online to use the USB Connector but still not be able to play the game I already purchased?

This is the only DS WiFi game I have (or will have), my grandson does not have a DS system and guess what - I will NOT be buying a Nintendo DS for him for Christmas now after contacting Nintendo Customer Service about this issue and their handling of my complaint.

As a consumer, I find this type of deceptive advertising unacceptable and I do not spend my hard earned dollars with companies that practice it.

I will be buying a PSP for my grandson for Christmas.

I will also be writing a letter of complaint to the Better Business Bureau and the Texas Consumer Affairs Department.

Back To School Shopping
This week-end is Tax Free Shopping Week-end in Texas. That sounds totally awesome right?

Yeppers and it is ... EXCEPT ... everything is not tax free - mostly clothes (diapers are included though which is probably a blessing for families with babies/toddlers) are - I'm not sure what else - I don't have any kids to buy school clothes or other school supplies for these days being a Grandma but I hear about it from my daughter who does with a 9 year starting 4th grade next week - I'm glad I'm not out fighting the crowds though with a bunch of kids needing to try on school clothes because they are growing out of everything so quickly like my grandson does.

Some of the things that are NOT tax free are pens, pencils, paper, glue, construction paper, glitter, colors, markers, notebooks, kids scissors, back-packs - school supplies type stuff. That I find to be a real shame! Parents spend a bunch on that kind of stuff for their kids.

My daughter was amazed my grandson's first year of school as a kindergartner because the school was always sending home requests for glue & colors in particular - other stuff too but those were always top of the list! She kept wondering what on earth they were doing with all that glue! She bought bottles & bottles & more bottles of glue that year & sent it to school and still the letters came home asking for more glue! I laughed .... I remember how much glue they used when she was in grade school! Kids spend a lot of time gluing everything in the world it seems - they glue it at school then bring it home. She was amazed at the amount of stuff he brought home every day too!

Happy 4th of July!!!
Happy 4th of July USA! My neighbors are enjoying it quite loudly :) ... it is raining here in Katy Texas ... but that has not slowed down their fireworks going off at all.

Me ... I'm already thinking about it being nearly Back to School shopping time ... my daughter told me that school starts on August 10th ... that is just a month & 6 days away .... school seems to be starting earlier & earlier every year! The 10th of August was my father's birthday .... he's been dead since I was a little girl of 2 or 3 so he never got to see me in Back to School clothes or take me shopping for them ... he & I both missed a lot of things because he died in that car wreck.

Be safe this 4th of July & please do not drink & drive!

My grandson loves summer vacation but he loves school & Mommy has already started buying his school clothes ... she bought him a really cute outfit yesterday! I went over & stayed with him for about 2 hours while Mommy ran a few errands, one of which was his new outfit. He is growing up in so many ways. I watched him pouring his own chocolate milk & cutting the end off his yogurt-to-go ... it seems like just yesterday he was a tiny little boy & now he is nine & so very self-sufficient!

My Week of Unexpected Obstacles

This last week has had several unexpected obstacles to me accomplishing anything at home or on my shops.

I was invaded this last week by Texas Tree Roaches (you can read about that at http://www.myspace.com/dragonflyswarm if you're interested).  Then Thursday nite, I got the answer to get rid of them (Hot Shot Max with boric acid powder from Lowe's) but I had a broken water pipe out by the curb - the neighbor called & reported it for me.

This morning I got up to find that I had no mailbox - someone stole it over night.  Then, tonite, my cell phone wouldn't work - it said - Insert SIM.  I went to my daughter's house & she took it apart & re-seated the SIM card & it started working again.  Then I came home & fixed me some supper - my daughter called & wanted me to come over & stay with the kids for a few minutes while she ran up to the store so off I went back to her house.  I left my house about 7:30 pm or 7:45 pm - I got home just a bit ago - after 10:30 PM.

I stayed to visit with my daughter once she got home!  And it was really nice to get to hug & kiss my grandson good night - I miss saying good night to him - I got spoiled when I used to live with them - I got to help tuck him into bed every night - he's nine so he still wants tucked in - won't be too long before it will be a thing of the past though!  Grandkids grow up even faster than your kids grow up!

The water company is now outside digging up the water pipes to fix the broken water pipe.  I couldn't park in my driveway or garage  - they have it blocked!  I parked in the neighbor's driveway.  Sure hope nothing bad happens to my car tonite - good thing I have terrific insurance!  Just in case!  They weren't here earlier - and they are using a backhoe to dig the ground up on both sides of the street!  Jeepers!  And they have my water turned off!

Tomorrow, I need to go have my oil changed & have them check the Maint Req light.

Next week ... I am hoping for a normal week!  I am tired ... I need some serenity back in my life.  Well .. I plan to take my fourteen year old step-grandson out & about for the day one day next week-end ... not sure that qualifies for serenity ... but it will be FUN!  I think my daughter thinks I am crazy for wanting to take him out & about :) (teen-agers!) but grandkids are a lot of fun ... I like being a Grandma :)  I enjoy spending time with them!

Grandparenting Is Not Always Easy
Being a grandparent is VERY rewarding & fun & exciting - it is also not the easiest thing to do some days or nights.

As a parent - I had control - I could say NO you cannot do that.  as a grandparent - I have no control at all.   The reason for all this May musing?  Last Friday nite, April 29th, 2006 ... my grandson (he will be 9 years old next week) got hurt - at football practice - not sure if it if flag football or touch or exactly what.

Anyway - he & another kid collided ... VERY hard ... later my grandson started throwing up - 4 1/2 hours later with CAT scan results of everything being ok, they were on their way back home from the Emergency Room - just a mild concussion - no sports for 14 days.  He also had a sinus infection.

Me & the dog sat by the cell phone waiting for what seemed an eternity!  Yes, I considered going to the ER to be with them ... I was concerned it would make my daughter nervous though if I showed up - what if I paced & fretted - being a Grandma is soooo hard at times like that!  I knew he was alert & awake and that they had given him anti-nausea meds ... he didn't sound like he was in any immediate danger

... but please remember this is my ONLY grandchild!  And he is the joy & magic of my life ... we spend a lot of time together - painting, playing video games, shopping, reading - he reads VERY WELL & he enjoys reading a lot too as well as getting out the sprinkler in the backyard or other fun things kids like to do!

As a parent, I was too busy living through the moments like those, taking care of the kids & getting answers - as a grandparent ... it is my job to stay out of the way & just "be there" for him & his Mommy when they need me - THAT is REALLY hard!

She has told me that he is going to play tackle football ... me?  I asked if he couldn't just swim!  And yes, I do know that he can get hurt at any sport and just sitting in a chair in his own house - the news has been full of people in cars running their cars through windows killing people.

I worry a LOT more as a grandparent than I did as a parent!
