Windrock Trails - Oliver Springs, TN. Full Post View | List View

OHV trails on Windrock Mountain. Anderson County, East Tennessee. Wind, Rock & Ride

An Open Letter to all Local City Council Members
An Open Letter to all Local City Council Members magnify
We must recognize, as well as, show our gratitude and hospitality to all who seek the trails on Windrock Mountain and the Coal Creek OHV Park. Oak Ridge has the accommodations and now we need to post informative signs around town to help our visitor's find what they are looking for. Much like the needs of all the rowing enthusiast's who come to visit our town, the OHV (off-highway vehicle) enthusiast's need love, also.

In my opinion, this area of east Tennessee needs an economical sock in its non-motivated gut! What's it gonna take to get our city council members in both Oliver Springs and Oak Ridge to realize and act upon all the needs of OHV enthusiast's coming to our little towns to ride Windrock Mountain? As an off-road enthusiast, I'd like to ask that something economically viable be done to make both Oak Ridge and Oliver Springs a great place to be if you've come here to enjoy an off-road vehicle excursion. Let's have some common sense and inform all the folks coming here to ride the mountain that we have the most amazing 72,000 acre tract of land with over 160 miles of off-road terrain just waiting in all its beauty to explore and conquer! Have we not recognized what the parking lots at all the hotels, restaurants, and campgrounds are filled with over these last eight or so years? ATV's, dirt bikes, 4x4's, rail buggies, mountain bike rider's and in general, people with money to spend in our towns while they are here having the time of their lives!

Currently, if you are fortunate enough to make your way through town and find Windrock Rd. in Oliver Springs, there are a few indications that you might be on the right track. As you make a turn onto Windrock Rd., there are a few signs, advertisement's really, that indicate nothing more than an arrow to lead the way. As I recall, I think the sign says, "CCMMC -->." As city council members, I shouldn't have to draw you a picture. However, and what would be ideal, would be a giant rebel flag with the words, "this way!" Yes, of course, I am only joking but you get the idea. Honestly, a few city attraction signs strategically planted around town ought to do the trick. Since there are a few city attraction signs that already exist, adding the Coal Creek OHV Park should be a simple addition.

However, and as far as I am concerned, doing what I have indicated would be a great start and improvement but obviously, more could be done. It is in our common interest to be a great host to all who are in town to ride the OHV park and as local residents we should be ambassadors. After all, these folks are going to spend money in our communities and the least we could do is provide a sign telling them where, what, when and how.

October 2008 Fall Event - Coal Creek OHV Park
October 2008 Fall Event - Coal Creek OHV Park magnify
The planned Coal Creek OHV Park Fall Event October 24-26 has already happened and I did not participate whatsoever. I did not even post a blog submission to tell everyone about it. Wow, that's unusual! I am usually on top of these things but not this time. However, and I always love to use the word, however, I will try to give a quick overview of what happened and who the winner's were of the Poker Run, Sled Pull etc.

Trying to find information about these things has proven to be difficult. I visited the websites where I can find out this information but none of them have the results.

As far as I know, it rained on Friday and made for a muddy weekend. It was evident as I saw a lot of trucks hauling their ATV's and dirt bikes home on Sunday and all were coated in a pretty mud-brown color. It must have been a great excursion for all. At least it wasn't a dust filled weekend where no one could see ten feet in front of themselves. When it's dusty up on the mountain I think we have more accidents because of the dust. I mean, ya can't see and when it's like that I hate to follow anyone. I like to be on my own and create my own dust.

Since it rained on Friday, the mud bog event, where ATV's try to make it as far as they can through the bog must have been prepared by nature rather than a large fire hose. When I see video of the events it's usually of the mud bog or drag racing event. It looks like a hell of a lot of fun and I think rider's take it very seriously. Tommy's off-road site always has some great footage of that event. Here is a link - http://www.tommyrhea.com/videoclips.htm to Tommy's site. He's always on top of getting the footage.

Since I can't find any reviews I'll leave it here with nothing to really say. The next event planned for Coal Creek OHV Park is the Spring Jamboree in 2009. I'll be sure to get involved and have something more to say than a long ramble of nothing. Sorry to have wasted your time in reading this lame review.

Would someone send me a link to a better review if you find one? Thanks!

East Tennessee OHV Cover - Fall 2008
East Tennessee OHV Cover - Fall 2008 magnify
Above is the working cover for my new magazine East Tennessee OHV! Or, as I like to call it, ETOHV. The sooner I can secure advertisement the sooner I can get it into the hands of the enthusiast's. Like I stated in the blog below, I have been working on windrocktrails.com and this new magazine ETOHV and the challenge has been in the time to develop all that goes along with such publications. Anyway, just thought some of you might enjoy a sneak peek of what's rolling toward the masses.

Don't miss the grand opening of the new Windrock Park Campground on Saturday, May 24, at 12:30 p.m. et. The Coal Creek Company has been hard at work making this possible for all of us.

As always,

East Tennessee OHV Magazine
East Tennessee OHV Magazine magnify
I am currently working toward outputting a quarterly magazine for the OHV community informing locals and visitors alike the where, what, when, how and whys of the riding trails in East Tennessee. Is there a need? Why not! Are there enough trails? You bet! It's built, are they coming? Without a doubt! Will we ever rise to the challenge of catering to all the OHV enthusiasts coming to our town? We must! That's why I am developing this new magazine, East Tennessee OHV. Our community needs to start informing the visiting public, in my opinion, a great deal more if we want to capture the essence of what our town is becoming. What's it becoming, you ask? Only the number 1 place this side of the Mississippi for riding or driving an ATV or dirt bike, Rail Buggy, 4X4 or a mountain bike on maintained and groomed trails. Will we ever be a Hatfield McCoy kinda town? I don't see why not. Further, I can't understand why it hasn't already? Ask any local and they'll bear witness to all the trucks pulling their ATV's an such around town. The hotel's love this time of year because of all the riders and might I add, rower's. Our town has so much to offer but like any town progress can be slow.

Over the last few months I have been working on and off between a new website windrocktrails.com and a new magazine entitled, East Tennessee OHV (Off Highway Vehicle). I need sponsors and advertiser's to help publish. Meaning, if you would like to advertise please send an email to info@windrocktrails.com to receive ad size's and price's.

Now that the Coal Creek Company is upping the ante it's time for the city to do its part and shift its economical strategy to the riders coming to town. We stand the opportunity to grow again to over 75,000 people and you know what that means? The Oak Ridge Mall might actually get built. Wouldn't that be something?

Look for the magazine by the fall addition. That's the goal.

Exciting Times for Coal Creek OHV
Exciting Times for Coal Creek OHV magnify
I was initially worried about the future of the trails on Windrock with the recent split between the Coal Creek Company and the WindrockATV Club. For the last 7-8 years, the WindrockATV Club has manged the trail system making sure the trails were free of debris and groomed for riding among a host of other responsibilities. However, and for whatever reasons, the WindrockATV Club has decided to call it quits in maintaining the trails for Coal Creek. Some folks may think the Coal Creek Company did away with the ATV Club but it is my understanding the Club decided to walk away.

Whatever the case might have been it doesn't matter, anymore. The Coal Creek Company has invested approximately $150,000 in new equipment and hired a new team to take over the maintenance of the trail system. Recently, the Coal Creek Company expressed their goals to windrocktrails.com to make the Coal Creek OHV trails "the best place to ride in east Tennessee!" We fully support their goals and look forward to staying in one of their new cabins at the newly constructed Windrock Park Campground located on the right on Windrock Park Lane .8 miles down Windrock Rd. We also look forward to riding the additional 20 miles of new mountain bike trails being created near the new BK Motorsports shop at 7075 Knoxville Highway in Oliver Springs.

This is an exciting time for the Coal Creek Company with all the new changes and improvements to the trail system. The grand opening of Coal Creek's new campground, Windrock Park, will be held on Saturday May 24, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. on the new property. It's been a long time coming and we are certain the updates will be enjoyed for a long time to come.
