Dental repairs have come a long way.

Oral Piercing Gets You Dental Hellth
Oral Piercing Gets You Dental Hellth magnify
Looks like oral piercing is the latest youth rebellion without a clue. As they used to say, this is your dental health on hormones. If your kid has a tongue or lip ring, his or her fear of the dentist could be justified.

That’s because 15 to 20 percent of teens have a higher risk of both gum disease and tooth fractures according to a study from the School of Dental Medicine at Tel Aviv University. To prevent dentist visit phobia, have them consider a nose or nipple ring.

Few people fear the ear, nose and throat docs and I am not even sure the nipple docs have offices – at least that the authorities know about. When Dick Cheney shot his hunting buddy’s off, the only option for him was the quick nipple replacement medical clinics, which are in many tattoo parlors from what I hear.

While long hair was the scourge of my generation, there was very little pain involved. Not washing it enough as a teenager made the junior high dance pretty lonely for me, but the only health related issue that came up was my dad’s research in to gender reversal therapy or was it surgery? Luckily the hair problem has finally been remedied – without surgery – but this dental issue might not be as noninvasive for you.

Dental Fear - End Its Control Over You
Dental Fear - End Its Control Over You magnify
Dental fear is an interesting phenomenon. The part that I gravitate to is the lack of control issue. Because there is lack of control people suffer from more fear. Their initial fears can come from past experiences, either with the dentist or possibly similar situations with other health professionals. (Great dental fear research link at the end.)

I do not have fear of the dentist, but I am not free of "irrational" fear. I do not like riding down hills on my bike or mountains in a car - especially if I am in control of the vehicles. This is especially awkward since I am "in control" in these situations. But in a way I am not in control. My brakes are in control. And what if they fail??!!

Fake Health Gets Headlines Again: Sweetener Safe for Teeth
Fake Health Gets Headlines Again: Sweetener Safe for Teeth magnify
Cargill claims they can sweeten us up without ruining our grins and gums. The FDA has sided with the big food ingredient and grain company, listing Cargill's Xtend brand with 11 other sweeteners that are considered safe for teeth. While I give them an A for effort, it’s amazing how hard some companies work so we can keep faking ourselves out about dental health.

Next thing you know we will be able to take a pill that lets us believe we are going to the dentist on a regular basis. And candy bars will be sprinkled with a tooth fairy dust so we can (with a straight face) tell others we ate a meal of broccoli and cauliflower. Finally, if this does not get us in the mood to be better stewards of our natural enamel, advertisements will make us think we would eat mashed bananas and peas even if we had teeth.

Okay, I can go a bit overboard with my dental health rants. But taking the easy way out with overall and dental health is turning into a pathetic national pastime. Trick the body here. Fake out our death wish by “super size me” food poisoning over there. And then ta da... somehow we get the health we want!

Revisionist Oral History: The Root Canal HAS Changed
The root canal has been drubbed through the years for its agonizing exploits. While much deserved in the past, its dreaded historical references have hung on too long.

Just like the fact that your barber is no longer also your dentist, root canal (or endodontic) therapy has changed dramatically since the nomads of dental horror yore told those first stories. While Hollywood still portrays dentists as pain inducing sociopaths rather than professionals that actually REMOVE pain from our lives, almost every dental procedure has been "comfort enclosed" in some way over the last decade or so. This is not even considering all the amenities many dentists include during dental visits.

The "Dental Spa" is the most obvious example of comfort enclosure amenities concept - but many dental practices offer conscious sedation or other non-medication distractions like DVD movies and such.

This is not to say that some people won't still have fears or anxieties about pain. Yes, and any amount of poking around in the mouth might still set some people off no matter how "gentle" dentists are. But like many things we have been worried about - the actual result is much less than what we build it up to be through ignorance or unhealthy procrastination.

Recently, one of my young daughters cried the night before a dental visit, during breakfast before it and on the drive there. Then she got to the dental office and went straight to their "anxiety reduction video game arcade". Then after her visit she smiled and said, "Dad, look at the balloon the dentist made into to a puppy dog."

I asked if she was still afraid of the dentist or the dental visit - and she looked at me like I was from another planet. So I asked her, "Did the dentist convince you with balloon art hypnosis and heavy psychotropic drugs to forget about it." "No," she said, "I just forgot how much fun it was to come here!" I muttered, "Huh." Then she grabbed her favorite Martian's hand and we walked out the door.

Entry for September 11, 2007
We are stuck in old habits about dental health and dentists. I want to present dentistry in a way that moves it beyond what our parents thought of it and experienced it.
My father-in-law had a sore tooth pulled out by his dentist at the bar both frequented in the 1950s. The dentist carried a pair of pliers with him everywhere.

Well, dental treatment has improved significantly. But few things have changed about how we talk and think about it. We force our kids to go because it is important. Yet, we fear and/or avoid the dental visit like our dentist is still using a pair of rusty pliers after throwing back a few cold ones.

I have written a couple different stories about why we should be excited about dentistry! Okay, excited is too optimistic, but possibly you will feel better about what can be accomplished.

Few people would attempt to write about Dental Implants and Advanced Fillings (onlays) in an exciting way. I have already presented myself an "A" for effort - you can grade the result - as long as it is on a curve against those who have attempted the same.

Freedom Rings and Youth Regained with Dental Implants!

Regaining youth is not just for the famous because good health should not discriminate. Dental Implants are also about freedom and equality. Biting an apple and chewing with abandon should be the right of every citizen. Our dentist provides the level of care John/Jane Q. Public should expect from 21st century dentistry!

Missing teeth cause oral havoc. Rather than a harmonious union, it is anarchy with everything up for grabs: disease, deterioration, and recession. Dental implants shore up the foundation of the oral society. Disease has no place to hide; enforcement of health codes is consistent. Surrounding teeth can do their civic duty and prevent further community deterioration. The recession of the jaw is stopped (often reversed) and full employment of youth effect is successful.

And after our dentist creates your lifelike implant restoration, you will understand why the famous try to keep it all for themselves. Confidence is not only for the young or famous: take back your rights. Vote NO on slipping dentures, embarrassing gaps, and careful chewing!
