At least 200 dead in Pakistan cyclone
KETI BANDER, Pakistan, May 22, 1999 (AP) – Villagers and rescue workers braved lashing rain and gusting winds to recover 200 bodies from the sea and rescue thousands of survivors of a deadly cyclone that devastated hundreds of villages, officials and witnesses said Saturday. The death toll from the storm was expected to rise, as hundreds of villagers remained unaccounted for and scores of hamlets and small islands dotting the Arabian Sea coast remained under water. Officials hold out little hope that bodies will be recovered quickly. They fear many bodies have already been swept out to sea along with their homes, made mostly of straw and mud. Rescue workers moved thousands of people to safe areas in southern Sindh province, but many more still were stranded in remote villages, said Nazar Mohamamd Baloch, a government official. Fifty bodies were recovered Saturday from several islands off the coast and another 150 in the Badin district, said residents of the city of Keti Bander, also hard hit by the cyclone that generated winds of 170 mph. In Keti Bander, 72 miles southeast of Karachi, the water had receded, but lashing winds battered poor residents, many of whom had taken shelter in camps set up by the Pakistan's navy. Many survivors complained about the lack of help, with some saying it took rescue workers more than a day to arrive. ''We waited and waited but no one came to our help,'' said Usman Memon, a fisherman. ''There was nothing to eat and no where to go. It was frightening ... There was water all round us. ''A 60-year-old woman, Ama Hawa, lost her husband. ''My house is gone. I have eight children. We have nothing. No one is helping us,'' she said as she waited for food outside a relief camp. Ali Mohammed, another fisherman, was the lone survivor of a fishing boat with a crew of 12 aboard.''I managed to swim to the coast, but the rest could not make it. Bodies of two of my companions have been found and the rest are still missing. I think they are all dead, '' he said.Hundreds of soldiers were already in the area to provide help, and the military said hundreds more would join them later Saturday. Karachi, the country's largest city with 14 million people, was hit by high winds, but was spared the brunt of the cyclone when it changed directions and roared across land east of the city.
