FIBROMYALGIA Entry for February 19, 2008
FIBROMYALGIA Entry for February 19, 2008 magnify

One of my patients recently sent me an article of a well-known natural medicine professional in response to the Jan. 14, 2008 New York Times article about the approval of LYRICA (a potent drug used to mask diabetic nerve pain) for fibromyalgia patients.

While most of the info he provides about fibromyalgia is correct, he strongly suggests it to be a “physical response to mental and emotional stress.” This, like so many medical diagnoses, puts the patient into a “victim” position that I simply cannot agree with without further specification.

He then provides some very valid diet recommendations and stresses the use of neuro-modulator techniques. All this is fine; but I believe the underlying rationale is totally different. Here is my take on fibromyalgia:

Many individuals diagnosed with fibromyalgia also experience sleep disturbances, ringing in the ears, headaches, depression, and chronic fatigues, along with a gastrointestinal inflammation such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Reduced pain tolerance (proven by brain scans) goes along with this, as are—yes—external stress factors.

However you look at it food intake is at the base of it all.

  • Processed foods include acidity-producing fats (added for taste and texture), colorants, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, starch fillers (an allergen for at least 43% of our population).
  • The supposedly healthy vegetables have been grown with pesticides, fertilizers in surroundings of unclean air and iradiated.
  • Meat has been raised on modified grains and pumped full of hormones.
  • Soda drinks have been known to trigger anything from brain disorders to you name it. The short answer is that they affect your mineral balance.
  • Then there is the nasty chewing gum. Don't forget that the mucosa of your mouth quickly absorbs anything it comes in contact with.
  • The same goes for all those oral hygiene products from toothpastes to mouth washes and the like. Most of these also contain fluoride - a known displacer of calcium.

All of these triggers affect the mucosal tissue of your mouth and eventually that of your gut. Intestinal inflammation is a natural outcome. Intestinal inflammation leads to mineral absorption problems. Different deficiencies and/or ratio lay the base to various diseases.

So far, every case of fibromyalgia i have come across, had an underlying mineral deficiency and an overacidification of the body. Since the composition of your blood must remain balanced (if you loose this balance you will end up in the emergency room) the body uses its built-in safety measure of being able to draw calcium and some other minerals from your bones. With your blood stream this leached out calcium gets circulated throughout your entire body, from small finger joints to brain cells. In time this calcium needs to be redeposited. In men it frequently builds up as plaque in the arteries leading to cardiovascular disease. In women it may affect joints leading to osteoarthritis. Alternatively it may affect the muscular tissue (fibromyalgia is one outcome) where it lowers the pain tolerance along with its effect on the brain cells and your nervous system.

Therefore, depression and other mental symptoms in a fibromyalgia patient are NOT the cause of fibromyalgia but lastely the result of the same triggers that cause the intestinal inflammation, pain, tinnitus, sleep problems and so on: bad food and lifestyle choices.

The ONLY recipe for fybromyalgia patients, therefore, is to avoid anything that may cause an inflammation and allergic response in the body. Remember, grains are some of the biggest culprits because their proteins easily leak through the walls of an inflamed gut (leaky gut syndrome) into your bloodstream. In addition all gluten grain proteins contain an opioid-like substance that leads to carbohydrate-additction and more inflammation.

In Summary Avoid:

  • All processed foods and drinks, mainstrem oral hygiene products, incl chewing gum
  • All chemicals, toxins, additives, preservatives, colorants, binders, etc.

The Good News:

Your body replaces some of its cells every 105 to 125 days. With proper food intake and carefully monitored mineral balance (get help from your natural medicine professional) you can once again be well!

PS:

1) Why does fibromyalgia affect more women then men?

- RR: Due to their higher estrogen levels women have greater needs for a properly functioning calcium metabolism. This also explains why over the past few decades hormone replacement therapies and the outcry about increased levels of osteoporosis among women have become so common. In short: your calium metabolism is affected.

2) What about the proposed drug LYRICA?

- According to Pfizer’s own website its side effects are: “…dizziness, sleepiness, dry mouth, and edema. Plus blurred vision, weight gain, constipation, euphoric mood, and loss of balance. Also, increased appetite and trouble concentrating. “ It goes on to say: “LYRICA may cause serious allergic reactions. You should call your doctor right away if you think you have a serious allergic reaction such as swelling of the face, mouth, lips, gums, tongue or neck or if you have any trouble breathing. Other allergic reactions may include rash, hives and blisters.”

RR: Many of these symptoms are also linked with liver disease, heart disease, hypertension (a kidney-related issue) and, my favorite, diabetes. And, ALL of these symptoms show a direct link to your calcium metabolism incl. chronic metabolic acidosis.

Weight Gain or Obesity - PART ONE -- Entry for January 02, 2008
There is no such thing as being simply overweight!

Two out of three North-American individuals are overweight or outright obese.-- It is not the weight per se that is the problem, but the underlying lack of health that triggers your weight gain. You must start seeing weight gain as an expression of an internal imbalance or even a starting illness. You don’t simply “get fat.”

  • Have you gained weight around your waistline and cannot seem to get rid of it?
  • Is your waistline no longer showing that desired hour-glass figure?
  • Have you developed a beer-belly?
  • Has your body started to turn an apple-shape?
  • Or, are you packing on weight around your thighs and look like a giant pear?

Did you know that during a lifetime an individual of average weight who does not consume unneeded calories consumes 60 million kilocalories and more in food? Unfortunately, most overweight individuals consume considerably more in empty calories and, in addition, expend less energy.

The medical books describe many causes for weight gain: genetic factors, brain damage, endocrine system disorders, prescription drugs, environmental influences, socioeconomic status, psychological components (incl. binge eating and mid-night snacking), excess food intake, large portion size, and a sedentary lifestyle.

Genes often are overrated. They are no more than about thirty percent of all the influences that contribute to weight gain. Initial indications point to the fact that your genes mostly determine where the fat in your body is deposited, not how much fat your body packs on.

One of the recent discoveries is that of a protein called leptin. Leptin is one of the hormones produced in your adipose tissue and links to the brain cells that are responsible for your energy metabolism.

Mainstream medicine rarely looks at mineral deficiencies, adrenal and thyroid hypofunction, or food intolerances as likely causes of weight gain and obesity; all of which

natural medicine emphasizes as reasons for “heavyset families.”

The bottom line is that the proverbial beer-belly and midriff obesity are clear indicators of insulin resistance and a high risk of diabetes.
