BIOGRAPHY OF MANUEL COMPITO (aka OG Man)
Manuel Compito (aka OG Man) is a native of Los Angeles, California and a local artist in the Downtown community, known as SKID ROW.
Once an "artist in resident" of the LAMP Art Project, he is noted for "ghetto encaustics" for art pieces as 4Th Street and Ghost 2. His work is widely known throughout the Skid Row community, such pieces as John Dow, Winston Street, Man N Box, Pershing Square, San Julian, Peace N Hood round table and Kat Daddy and many more.
OG Man is a writer and author of Peace N Hood, A Coloring Book For The Urban Area which whose main characters, G-Dogg and Sad Kat encourages gangs to "stop the violence and keep the peace". With the assistance of Sea Jay Films, he has created a DVD of Peace N Hood and is currently writing a screen play adapted from the Neo-Novel coloring book.
He is also the author of several other books, "Lords Of The Ghetto, The Immortal Ghetto Soldiers and Little Watts, Streets That Made A Name:".
As Associate Producer , he worked with Film Director, Ms Pamela Wilson of Splendiferous Entertainment, on her documentary of Skid Row artist.
Throughout his youth, Manuel spent many months and years in and out juvenile detention centers, youth authority and finally prison. It was in these moment of incarceration that he evolved as a "self-taught artist" and developed his "prison-art style" which today has developed as "Urban Art". He shares his knowledge, skill and techniques of drawing and painting,as a volunteer, working with children at the Union Rescue Mission and Positive Light Esteem Program.
He continues to be a faithful member of Ms. Lillian Calamari's Art Project at the James Wood Community Center.
Manuel is also faithful member of Central City Community Church of the Nazarene (the church on the corner of 6Th and San Pedro) and a faithful member of LOVE LA (the outreach ministry of Young Nak). Most of all, he's a proud father of eight children and a grandfather to a bunch of gifted grandchildren.
While art of various mediums continue to be his passion, OG Man believes in "community involvement and being of service. He is a founding member and the Official spokesperson for OG's N SERVICE ASSOCIATION which is dedicated to uplifting the men of Skid Row through "Self Help" and improving the lives of children living on Skid Row.
Currently, OG Man has an "ongoing exhibit" at LA CAN (Los Angeles Community Action Network). Much art work has been purchased by an loyal supporter, Ms. Anita Nelson, Directory of SRO Corporation, which has Manuel's artist exhibit at the newly, build Yankee Hotel (San Julian Street and 7Th Street) and at the Russ Hotel (San Julian street near 5Th Street.
Today, February of 2007 until March of 2007 , OG Man is involved with Downtown Art Walk and his work is being featured at "Pharmaka Art", 101 West 5Th Street, Los Angeles, California.
