We learned about the Inca culture. The society was very sofisticated. The Inca himself was the God. He had the right of polygamy and produced between 100-200 children. They became the ruling class. It assured loyalty. The working class got pieces of land. This was enough to live on. If the family got more children, the parents got more land. They also had to work the land of the Inca and provided labour for the temples, palaces and roads.  The same rules counted for concerred peoples, if they recognized the Sun and the Inca as their God.

We also learned how little is left of the Inca culture. The museum del Oro in Lima had one of the best collections. There are many theories about Machu Picchu. One thing seems to be clear. Piscarro never saw Machu Picchu, because it was already vacated in 1532 when he came to Peru.

The infrastructure was fantastic.  They had roads from Quito (in the North ) to Cuzco and from Cuzco to the Chilian border. The road over the highlands which had hanging bridges made out of rope, paths and stairs  carved out of rock was from 1500-2000 miles long. Parts are still uncovered today. We walked on the Inca trail to Machu Picchu.

A fantastic experience. A trip we will remember.

We loved the food, especially the seafood. We tried it all the cheviche, pisco sour, all kinds of potatoes, alpaca meat, cuy or guinea pig, palta rellena ( stuffed avocado), chicharones (deepfried pork), cancha (toasted corn), chicha (corn drink), and all the terrific soups. From fish soups to vegetable soups. The cocao tea gave us energy (It is a stimulant) and helped us to prevent alltitude sickness.

We loved Ariquipa. A beautiful colonial town and the convent was very impressive. We also hiked the Canyon del Colca and saw the condors. (see pictures the last 30 are of the hike)

Than off to the Nazca lines. Ten hours by bus! I did not realize that there is so much desert along the coast. We were not too impressed with the people in Nazca, but we really liked the Peruvians. They are friendly and many of them warned us about theft. They had patience and listened to our 30 words of Spanish. We had some great conversations.  We travelled only during the day and had no problems. So we finished the classic tour with Ica and a buggy ride in the desert as well as a stay in Pisco with the visit at Islas Ballastas and the reserve of Paracas.

Than Puno and we stayed at Amantani, an Island on Lake Titicaca. We stayed with a family who got assigned to us in order to devide the income from the tourist evenly.
Quite an experience. There is not much to spare in those families. Our family had 8 children. They lived off the land which ment potatoes and roots. We danced in traditional clothes at night. The girls of the island played an excellent game of volleyball. The boys played, you guessed it ....soccer.
We also saw the big entrance of the Inka on a reed boat from the Island Urus. What a party it was. We were during Puno week in Puno and saw some other colourful parades as well.

Manu park, the jungle, and the reserve was our next 7day excursion. We drove first 8 hours on a challenging road by bus. The cloud forest and the Cock on the Rock were impressive. Than by riverboat along the (alta ) and the Madre de Dios to end up at the Manu river. It was a great trip. We were glad to include the reserve, because you see many more animals such as the giant Otter. The Parrot and Macaw licks were a highlight. We had planned to fly out, which would have made our trip 6 days, but the plane broke down and the other was full that day and it was not sure that it would fly  the next day, so back by boat again in the rain. It was rainy season and the river was wild. The road was blocked for four hours because of a landslide. We definitively got  adventure.
