I managed to finish two of the books that I bought during the last KLIBF (Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair). The recent one, Freakonomics by Levitt and Dubner, that I read when I supposed to settle many more other things such as studying for Monday paper.
And here I am, in front of the computer, typing these. LOL!
My mum and dad and my lil sis now are in Penang, taking home my chef-sister things from her rented house. She will also have her last paper soon, and she will graduate after that. Borrowing from my mum, "She's going to graduate soon, how about you?". After making a few faces (cute ones) with my mother, I knew and she knew that both of us were joking.
And then I remembered one argument with mother. The one regarding Freakonomics. The authors claimed that crime rates can fall due to legalize abortion. Of course, it sounds morally wrong to say one immoral thing can stop another. My mother said that the writers must have something missing in their heads. (wait, i think mum really said something like that)
Why in earth can someone said that? How can legalizing abortion reduce crime rates? Why not consider other things such as the law enforcement?
The writers traced their cases from the decision of Roe v Wade on January 22nd 1973, where after the court ruled in favor of Jane Roe, later abortion is legalized in United States. These freakonomist believe, after collecting massive amount of data that somehow after pregnant women has been given the choice whether to have or not to have children, there are less risk of 'unwanted' children being born. And these unwanted children, if born, will grow up to become the criminals.
So they are saying it like this, abortion has killed many potential criminals.
Watch what you are reading.
Remember when we used to learn about 'reasoning? The ones with premises and conclusions? The one that when we say "Monkeys like bananas", and "You like bananas" therefore, "You are a Monkey"? LOL!
If and I only say if here... If, we were to adopt legalized abortion here in Malaysia, apart from the reasons that Malaysia currently allows (to save the mother, to preserve mental and physical health) will Malaysia have a reduced crime rates?
Or, can we say that if we were to legalize abortion, we will have less 'buang bayi' cases? (Because they already throw them out of the womb killing them before they are born)
To a certain extent, I do agree with what happened in the US. I mean that somehow or rather, that the lesser unwanted child, the lesser it will be about the crime rate. But the thing is, they have missed the source of the problem.
When we say rain causes thunderstorms, or the reverse, thunderstorms causes rains, we say it only because we see it that way, and somehow these two things are correlated to each other. But we also know that both can occur separately. Same with the case above, both (abortion and crime) are correlated, because we see the facts, the data that they collect. But can we guarantee that all unwanted child will become criminals? Or can we guarantee that the child that survives will not have the motivation to be one?
The source of the problem is how the child can become unwanted in the first place.
The parents are not ready to have such commitment. And most of the time, they are also not prepared to have a commitment between each other. Maybe the pleasure of sex before marriage overwhelmed them that they forgot the consequences.
And come not near to the unlawful sexual intercourse. Verily, it is a Fâhishah [i.e. anything that transgresses its limits (a great sin)], and an evil way (that leads one to Hell unless Allâh forgives him)
Curb premarital sex. And help poor parents to grow and educate their children.
p/s:And why am I writing about this again? I am supposed to study for the Monday paper! Maybe I am just pissed off to see something like
this (make sure you see this one!). Or maybe I just missed my mother for taking a good care of me and not let me become unwanted. Or maybe I just want to share with you the picture above, and say how grateful I am to have friends and family that mold me to who I become today. Or maybe, to commemorate this date, 3rd of May, as it is
someone's birth date.
p/p/s: Happy birthday! Be thankful to your parents who mold you into such interesting being! And there is a secret message for you in the picture. =)
p/p/p/s: and guess what, a few of my course mates started to call me 'Freak' since they saw me with the book.
