As if accounts at Blogger, Xanga, LiveJournal and my real blog weren't
enough, BEHOLD! Here is srah's Yahoo! 360° account!
First of all, I really don't think it's a good idea to give your
Internet product a name with a character that's not on the
keyboard. Second, I don't have high hopes for this blog thing
(not just for me - I think it's pretty much a given that I'm not going
to be using this regularly when I already have all of these
alternatives - but for the world in general) because people like
blogging in THEIR OWN SPACE. That's what makes them feel
comfortable.
Yahoo! has this strange "renting" metaphor going on - my invitation from
Yogi says:
I've
rented my own place on Yahoo! 360 and I'd like you to connect to me so
we can stay in touch. You can touch my blog, my photos, my lists - and
all sorts of things that matter to me. You can rent a personal page and
blog of your own, which will be linked to mine. Because who wouldn't
want to be linked to mine?!!?
MT lets you publish to
your own space. It's sort of like owning your own home. LJ
and Blogger make that illusion with customized templates so that you
can make the place your own. Yahoo! is like the Albion College
dorms, where you cannot use nails or tacks on the walls - just sticky
tack - and as a result, all of your belongings will fall off the walls
and the ugly institutional white color of the walls shows
through. There's no personalization so there's never the comfort
of home.
