A Weekend With Aunt Mary Soup
A Weekend With Aunt Mary Soup magnify

My road trip this past weekend was a special one. I traveled from north east Indiana to north west Indiana. For those of you who are not from this area let me explain. The people in north east Indiana are pretty much alike. Sort of like that movie "Pleasantville". If any one who doesn't fit in wanders into the area, the farmers all don sticks and chase them over to north west Indiana. Therefore northwest Indiana is sort of like a penal colony of those who dare to be a little bit different from the expectations on this side of the state. My aunt lives in Hammond.

Now another way to describe Hammond is to say its urban. I am using it for my Tuesday travel day because it is my most recent trip but unless you have an Aunt Mary Soup there you probably do not want to make Hammond the destination of your next vacation. We did things like walk her dog along the abandoned rail road tracks and talk about important things like life. Of course we went out Saturday night and ate Chinese food - and for Sunday breakfast ate at "The Wheel" so I could have my spinach and feta cheese omelet. Saturday night we drank to much wine and watched my Al Gore DVD "An Inconvenient Truth". On Sunday afternoon she took me to a really neat store called Sanctuary Crystals where she had arranged for me a belated 50th birthday gift of a tarot reading by:

It was a very affirming experience. Oh and by the way Aunt Mary Soup is not really my aunts name. It is just what I have called her since I was a kid. I guess I always have confused words. Her name is Aunt Mary Sue. And she sent me home with the item in the photo above. I need to find someone to help me assemble it before my grand-baby arrives early in March. The picture is of the cradle that my grandfather slept in when he was born in 1903.

Then on Sunday pm I headed home. Back to northeast Indiana. And life goes on . . .

Last Thursday evening, while I was at work, there were storms in north east Indiana. When I got home to the condo, my Internet was not working. In spite of calls made to my cable company it was still not repaired when I went out of town for the weekend on Saturday morning. Arriving home on Sunday evening, the messages on the toll free cable company number about all of Indiana being out of service were no longer posted but my connection was not there. But they were indeed able to assist me which buttons to push to get things back up and running in short order. I did pretty good coping with no Internet for that couple of days. No head banging or anything like that.

The Best Ghost Story Ever
The Best Ghost Story Ever magnify

Back before cable TV there were usually three channels a family could get on their television set. In the areas I lived growing up there was always an after school movie to watch on days when the weather was too bad to play outside. Back in the 1960's that meant movies from the 1940's. As a result, I just love the 1940 romance movies. In fact my favorite movie of all time is "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" which was filmed in 1947 and starred Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison. Most of the time when I mention my favorite movie people ask if that was not a TV show. It was but I really did not care for the TV show. Yet the movie is wonderful! It makes me cry at least once every time I watch it.

"People ARE their principles." ~ Katie Morosky Gardner:
"People ARE their principles." ~ Katie Morosky Gardner: magnify

My hero for this week is a fictional character: Katie Morosky Gardner. As a teenager I went to see the movie, "The Way We Were" to be all googly eyed over Robert Redford - of course. But as a young female I was absolutely blown away with the concept of a woman to whom saving the world was ultimately more important than having Robert Redford. The movie was a wonderful way to make a person think about what is important. Katie was a strong character that influenced my life.
