Laura to return to 'General Hospital'

By DERRIK J. LANG, AP Entertainment Writer Fri Jul 11, 4:01 PM ET

LOS ANGELES - Genie Francis is checking back into "General Hospital."

The 46-year-old actress again will reprise her role as Laura on the ABC daytime soap opera beginning Aug. 26.

The character's 1981 fairy-tale wedding to Luke (played by Anthony Geary) was watched by 30 million viewers and landed the couple on the cover of Newsweek magazine. Francis began playing Laura in 1976.

"This is a short visit," Francis told The Associated Press on Friday. "It's a mother-daughter story. Years ago when I started playing the character as a 14-year-old girl, it was a mother-daughter story, only I was the daughter. So it's kinda cool this is full circle. It's nice to come back for visits. `General Hospital' is my home."

Laura was last seen slipping in and out of a catatonic state in 2007. The upcoming appearance will feature Laura in a story line with daughter Lulu. Francis, who now runs a home-furnishing shop in Belfast, Maine, said she was told that Laura wouldn't be killed off during her latest guest stint.

"I would stay on, but `General Hospital' honestly doesn't seem to want that relationship with this character at the moment," said Francis. "They want little short doses during sweeps periods. It's not entirely up to me. I'm thrilled and delighted my audience stands behind me. If they didn't, you can be sure I wouldn't get to come back for these visits."

Francis won a supporting actress Daytime Emmy in 2007 for previously reprising the role.

Did you know?

Tony was originally only hired on GH for 13 weeks?
Tony originally tested for the role of Senator Mitch Williams (who Luke Spencer was later ordered to assassinate)?
The writers once thought to pair Luke with Lesley?
Because Tony liked to do love scenes naked, in one scene with Holly Luke accidentally displayed full frontal nudity?
Tony worked on his first soap, Bright Promise, with Susan Brown (Gail Baldwin) and David Lewis (Edward Quartermaine)?
Tony once had a cat named for Elizabeth Taylor?
Tony has a 10-week vacation built into his contract?
Tony is the only daytime actor who is contractually allowed to rewrite lines for his character?

From an article about Genie Francis:

A lot more goes into being Luke and Laura than meets the eye! Genie and Tony Geary take their acting very seriously. They always watch playbacks of their scenes together, and often rewrite their own lines together.

THE CAST OF '81
They've Got the RX for Success

Here they are en masse! Those great actors and actresses who make your day. It's quite a job getting all forty cast members together at once and on the day this picture was taken there were a few who didn't make it, but who definitely belong on the roster: Peter Hansen (Lee Baldwin), Leslie Charleson (Monica Quartermaine), Andre Landzaat (Tony Cassadine), Rick Springfield (Dr. Noah Drake), Renee Anderson (Alexandria Quartermaine). Of course, there are many others who appear on screen or behind the scenes to help make General Hospital a true afternoon delight. Kudos and congratulations to all.
From left to right. 1st row: Philip Tanzini (Jeremy Hewitt), Bradley Green (Tommy Baldwin, Jr.). 2nd row: Shell Kepler (Amy Vining), Eileen Dietz (Sarah), Brooke Bundy (ex-Diana), Genie Francis (Laura Baldwin), Gail Rae Carlson (Susan Moore), Susan Pratt (Anne Logan), Emily McLaughlin (Jessie Brewer), John Beradino (Dr. Steve Hardy), Rachel Ames (Audrey Hardy), Loanne Bishop (Rose Kelly), Denise Alexander (Lesley Webber), Bob Hastings (Capt. Bert Ramsey). 3rd row: Todd Davis (Bryan Phillips), Lisa Lindgren (Kathy Summers), Bianca Ferguson (Claudia Johnson), Frank Maxwell (Dan Rooney), Lieux Dressler (Alice Grant), Robin Mattson (Heather Webber), Richard Dean Anderson (ex-Dr. Jeff Webber), Doug Sheehan (Joe Kelly), Tristan Rogers (Robert Scorpio), Chris Robinson (Dr. Rick Webber), Richard Sarradet (ex-Howard Lansing). 4th row: Rick Moses (Hutch), Tony Geary (Luke Spencer), Anna Lee (Lila Quartermaine), Norma Connolly (Aunt Ruby), Cherie Beasley (Shelley Vernon). 5th row: Jackie Zeman (Bobbi Spencer [sic]), Susan Brown (Dr. Gail Baldwin), Stuart Damon (Alan Quartermaine), and Davis Lewis (Edward Quartermaine).

From an article about Jackie Zeman:

Jackie and castmate Tony Geary sign autographs at a fan gathering. "It means so much to us that people appreciate the work we do on GH." Even though Bobbi [sic] and Luke don't see eye-to-eye on General Hospital, Jackie fondly refers to Tony as her "favorite big brother" off screen.

From a piece on Ricky Dean Anderson's departure from the show:

On-screen, Tony's always surrounded by beautiful women, so it's only natural he'd grab up this gorgeous duo after hours--(l.) Ricky Dean's lady love Kathy McGuiness, and (r.) Shell Kepler (Amy Vining) are the lucky ladies.

THE FANS STRIKE OUT!
Rick Springfield mobbed, Tony Geary makes great escape, at General Hospital baseball game
by Linda B. Little

Everyone knows the GH cast loves to swing--at baseballs, that is! And at a recent softball game with a Los Angeles radio station, stars like Tony Geary, Jackie Zeman, Norma Connolly and Rick Springfield got to strut their stuff before thousands of screaming fans. It got a little hot, though, when the crowd rushed forward to get close to their favorites. Jackie was swept away by friend Jason Celich, Tony snuck through a hole in the outfield fence, and Rick, after having his shirt ripped off by adoring fans, managed a hasty getaway.

You would have thought it was a world series the way fans rushed the field to get at stars like [. . .] Norma Connolly (Ruby) and Tony Geary (Luke) below.

From a piece on the stars' real life events over the past year:

Superstardom was in store for Tony Geary (Luke) and Genie Francis (Laura). Here they entertain questions at an honest-to-gosh New York press conference.

From the Word Find:

Though Laura is Luke's one true love, Aunt Ruby and sister Bobbi [sic] will always have a special place in his heart.

From an article on Gloria Monty:

Producer Gloria Monty is always working to insure that GH will remain in the #1 spot. Every day she comes on the set to give notes to the actors to make sure that their performances are finally tuned.

From a piece on the history of the show:

Port Charles has become a thriving community which this year celebrated its bicentennial with a parade complete with marching bands--and unfortunately, a murder. But GH is definitely not just a medical show.

Luke Spencer (Tony Geary) and Hutch (Rick Moses) are two characters who've helped keep the storylines fresh and exciting. A disco king and a hitman are not exactly the standard romantic heros [sic] of daytime.

general hospitalLast week on General Hospital, Johnny (Brandon Barash) got angry at Trevor (Stephen Macht) for starting a war with Sonny (Maurice Benard) and decided on telling Sonny the truth of Trevor's manipulations in hopes of negotiating a truce. A dangerous Trevor planned on using Lulu (Julie Marie Berman) to keep Johnny under his thumb and after dismissing Georgie's (Lindze Letherman) suspicions about Coop (Jason Gerhardt), Maxie (Kirsten Storms) made plans for a romantic evening alone with Coop at Sam's (Kelly Monaco) penthouse.

The suspense continues in Port Charles as the text message killer strikes again.

Read on for more spoilers on General Hospital.

Your Take

Kiowa said: Georgie would have been so cute with Spinelli.
mazgirl said: So I guess we're supposed to feel better that instead of taking care of her sick grandmother all these year...

This week on General Hospital, the hunt goes on for the text message killer as Coop, Jerry (Sebastian Roché) and Johnny are at the top of the list for suspects. The suspense kicks in today as the text message killer takes its first victim of the week. After receiving an anonymous text message warning her about Maxie, Georgie heads to the park and is killed by a familiar face.

Lulu delivers the bad news about Georgie to Dillon and Felicia (Kristina Wagner) returns to Port Charles for Georgie's funeral. Felicia tells Maxie that she hasn't really been caring for her grandmother and that she's been working on a top secret mission with Frisco (Jack Wagner). Upon learning about this, Maxie delivers a touching eulogy for her little sister but it turns out to be a roast for Felicia for her terrible parenting skills.

As for Sonny, he makes a decision to take care of Johnny himself once and for all. Sonny gives orders on Johnny's murder. This is heard by Johnny and Lulu, who continues to mend her relationship with Logan (Josh Duhon) as she fights her attraction to Johnny. In an effort to keep Lulu away from danger, Johnny pushes Lulu away for her own good.

Other spoilers for this week involve Liz and Jason's secret affair, Carly's (Laura Wright) surprising baby news for Jax (Ingo Rademacher), and Sam's fear that she's next to die.

Sweet sweet Georgie!
Sweet sweet Georgie! magnify

A Gruesome Discovery

As the week begins Georgie recognizes the person she encountered in the park but is too late in figuring out that she is in the company of the text message killer. Sadly she is the mad-man's latest victim. Soon after, Spinelli comes across the body of his trusted friend and secret admirer. He does his best to revive her while calling 911, but his efforts are for naught.

Meanwhile Maxie's got a romantic evening set up for Coop at Sam's place, but its lucky who unexpectedly arrives. Miraculously, the former lovers avoid fighting and he leaves just before her intended dinner companion shows up. But just when things are turning romantic btw coop and Maxie, lucky returns to inform them that Georgie has been murdered!..Rushing to the scene, Maxie has to be restrained by mac as her devestation takes form of a major freak-out. "its pretty devastating for Maxie, because the last words she says to me are pretty horrible," says LL. "she has to live with that."

Spinelli's Guilt

Worried about Maxie's health, Mac takes her to the hospital for a check up. THere he breaks the news of Georgie's passing to Robin, who turns to Patrick for comfort. As the Scorpio Family gathers to grieve their loss, Spinelli is questioned by the police and released. Returning to the pent house, he tells Jason of the tragic events and admits he feels guilty for not having done a better job of protecting his friend. Comforted by Jason, the technogeek later returns to the crime scene to say an emotional farewell.

Coop meanwhile begins acting rather suspiciously even as he offers Maxie a shoulder to cry upon. And heaven knows Maxie needs all the support she can get when her long absent mom Felica arrives, claming to have been on a top secret mission with Frisco. Maxie is however, is having none of her mom's excuses and remains distant. In fact, as Felicia bonds with Robin, Maxie sits on the sidelines glowering. Upon meeting Georgie's mom, Spin gushes about the girl he was so honored to have as his friend.

Maxie's Wrath!

Returning to town unaware of what has happened, Dillion is shocked to learn of his ex-wife's passing and joins his fellow mourners at church for her funeral. Standing before everyone, Maxie delivers a heartfelt eulogy before taking the opportunity to bash Felicia for having been a terrible mother. "Maxie says that Felicia wasn't there for her when she overdosed and through all her trials and tribulations, " says KW. "its devastating to see Maxie responding as she does."

Felicia dashes out of the church and Dillion follows, assuring her that Georgie could not have loved her mom more. Taking flowers to her daughter's grave, Felicia is overwhelmed and her tears fall upon Georgi's tombstone as an unforgiving Maxie coldly watches. After Mac suggests that Felicia stay for the holidays, an emotional Maxie hands her mom a gift from Georgie. But can the mother and Daughter rebuild their relationship? "she will be there for Maxie, to give her love and support and be more understanding than usual of her bad behavior," previews KW

TidBits

It's Lucky that shows up at Sam's penthouse while Maxie's waiting for Coop in the hot tub, he leaves, Coop shows up and as things get heated up between the two. Lucky returns to break the news of Georgie's death!

Apparently, this is going to get worse before it gets better, as Maxie will be leaning on Coop but he's going to be acting suspicious.

Jill F Phelps, says this story is about the 3 "R" revelations, romance and rip roarin action!

There will be more suspects as time goes on BUT will any of the suspects turn out to be the ACTUAL killer...... ..find out in 2008!

Apparently, more clues lead Maxie to Logan and Cooper about some trait they share and she starts putting pieces togeter about who killed her sister and it says will she be on top of the list for the TMK.

The Text-message killer strikes again this week on GH, taking Georgie's life and leaving her loved ones reeling as her shocking secret is revealed, Felicia gets a less than warm welcome from her surviving daughter and both of Maxie's lovers fall under suspicion!
