I got a new
Toshiba notebook for Christmas.

Awesome little machine, but it only had 512 MB of RAM.
Now, seeing as how I do most of my schoolwork at home, and since I use VirtualPC and VMWare for my virtual Enterprise Network, 512 was not going to be enough. Time to start shopping.
I searched the "Big 3" (
CompUSA,
BestBuy and
Circuit City) and did not care for their prices. I live near a
Fry's Electronics, so I went there and checked them out. Still too pricey. Every RAM module that I looked at was at least $185.00. I was not going to pay that much for a 1GB PC2 4200 SoDIMM. The Hunt Continues.....
So, I am browsing around the web looking for ram and I finally got smart enough to do an advanced Google search containing the module, warranty and the price that I wanted to pay. the first hit that came up was
MemorySuppliers.comThey had the SoDIMM that I wanted, the warranty that I wanted (Lifetime) and at the price that I wanted to pay, (less than $150.00) Here was the really kewl part. Free Express Shipping, and free shipping for RMA's.
The unit was ordered and in a few days it arrived. I grabbed my laptop tool kit and headed for the bench.

A static strap, a couple of screws and quick snap! The memory was in. Time to test.
I returned the cover to it's original position, screwed it down and turned the notebook over. I opened the lid and pressed the power switch. After a couple of seconds I got the windows splash screen and thought "Right ON!" Then the infamous Blue Screen of Death reared it's ugly head. OUCH! Houston, we have a problem.
Time for some good old fashioned troubleshooting. After some tests, some trials and a little fowl language, it was determined that the module was DOA. Great, time for RMA.
I followed the procedures at
Memorysuppliers.com and RMA was a breeze. I shipped it back, (they rebated the shipping cost!) and about 10 days later a working module arrived! YAY! It was a fairly painless experience as far as RMA's go.
So, now it is time to give them a second chance.
I need another gigabyte for my desktop and I am going back to
memorysuppliers. They are a little bit more expensive than the others for this module, but with shipping or gas it works out to about the same.
Let's see how it works out this time.
