Swinging through the internet one vine at a time

Zork
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

For Julia
I was listening to music at work today when Coldplay's "Speed of Sound" came on. This song was on the operating room speakers while my wife delivered our 2nd daughter Julia.

So I wanted to save this memory for her.

The joys of job transition
For the past week, I have been in the really envious position of not being responsible for much. As such, the bug queue has had a chance to drain.

Today, I closed (err, reassigned) my last open bug. That brings my count of open bugs to 0!

I don't think I have ever seen 0 bugs. I am sure that the new team won't let that last long. Actually, there is a pending queue assigned to another paranoid that has my name written all over it.

But for the moment, I will bask in the glory of no bugs.

Moving On...
I have to report, with mixed emotions and a heavy heart, that I am moving on from the Membership team at Yahoo!. Fortunately for me (and hopefully for Yahoo!), I am remaining with the company and transitioning to a role in the central Paranoids team.

I will be responsible for application security, evangelizing security best practices, educating and reviewing the applications developed by the rest of the company. Of course, I will not be doing this alone, but in conjunction with a crazy bunch of engineers that really thrive on this sort of stuff.

For me, this is a big change in my day-to-day life. I will retain some aspects of core engineering, but the target audience of my development will be internal customers rather than the largest audience on the planet. So that will be a big change.

I will be getting a much broader set of challenges to manage and I will hopefully be able to do good for the company as a whole by helping out a large set of teams to make their applications more secure and design security into their architectures from the get-go.

I will be leaving behind an incredibly talented and motivated team. This is where the mixed emotions part comes in. It really is the hardest decision I have ever had to make (getting married, buying the house, choosing colleges were all WAY easier!). The challenges the Membership team face are daunting and exciting and I have a lot of faith in their abilities to deliver.

UPDATE: Reservation Rewards
A follow-up on my previous post regarding Reservation Rewards.
I checked my online bank statement today and see that THOSE BASTARDS actually refunded my $40. Frankly, I was shocked to see they followed through.

After posting, I did a Yahoo! search and began to get scared that I actually made things worse.

It might be time to give LifeLock a try!

Be careful out there. Check your bank statements regularly.
