The Center of Afrikan Unity of Harlem

As a people we have strived to bring back that ancient Afrikan Unity which was suppressed, by the ideas and structures of colonization for the exploration of Afrikan resources. In the 1900’s the first Pan-African Congress meeting in London finally set a precedence which created a firm foundation on which we presently, have this opportunity as Afrikans from the continent and Diaspora, to continue the missions. By the 1950’s Afrikan countries were on the path of creating various political and economical organizations to place back Afrika coherence. As a mission for the African Union is to promote unity and solidarity of Afrikan States, we at A.U.H., Inc are here to spearhead the empowerment and unity of Afrikan people worldwide. We are learning that in order for our people to collectively know the missions in which Afrika and the Union needs us to carry out, we need a base. Our main goal here at A.U.H., Inc is to establish, “The Center of Afrikan Unity of Harlem”, where all of the above programs and projects, with others yet to come, can easily be housed. A.U.H., Inc is honored to announce we are in the drafting process of the proposal with the following details, and if the Union can provide any structural assistance, it would be appreciative.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

An Afrikan Diasporic-based unity center called, " The Center for Afrikan Unity in Harlem”, (TCOAUH) will be established in Harlem, a region in New York City, United States of America. The Center for Afrikan Unity in Harlem will focus on unifying Afrikan Heritage Peoples worldwide who were afflicted by the, “European Slave Trade of Afrikan People,” starting around 1441 and the, “Scramble for Afrika”, after the Berlin Conference of 1884 was held in Europe. The community center will focus on Afrikan Heritage Peoples regardless of language, religion or place of birth to serve them on social, educational, and economical levels of interaction. As a unified whole it is easy to see the best interest as purely Afrikan Heritage people. It is expected that through education of historical events, it will be possible to have a direct and positive impact on the well-being and unity of Afrikan People throughout the world. The primary methods for achieving the goals and objectives of TCOAUH will be:

  • the creation of a International Community Center in the city that will become a focal point for providing information, cultural exchange, community services, for Afrikan Heritage peoples through workshops, programs and events, lectures, tours to Afrika, banking services, eateries, babysitting, health counseling, immigration services and
  • The development of a recruitment/training program and supervised practicum for student volunteers that will severe as a foundation for future leadership of TCOAUH.

TCOAUH will also utilize professionals, volunteers, student volunteers and community based activist who are descendants of the Afrikan continent. Each will be expected to successfully participate in a three week training program at the beginning of their work with TCOAUH. This training program will provide basic historical information pertaining to Afrikan history, Afrika’s relationship to other parts of the world, art and culture, language and science, for Afrikan heritage peoples and information on Afrikan- centered educational methods. Volunteers who demonstrate proficiency during the initial training program will be invited to participate in an advanced training program to learn effective teaching techniques to foster the professional skills to secure their own futures. Each student volunteer will be expected to contribute 3-5 hours each week and to continue with TCOAUH for a period of not less than 6 months with the benefits of college credits and field experience.

TCOAUH will operate with at least 6 full and part time staff members (but this number will grow). In addition, a Governing Board made up of the board of A.U.H., Inc, international community leaders and Harlem activists who will provide overall operation and supervision of the Center. Periodic evaluations will be conducted to assess the progress of TCOAUH on a) helping the student volunteers to become effective educators, b) developing professional international and national standards of Afrikan people and; c) the improvement of the well being of children of Afrikan heritage.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION/STATEMENT OF NEED

There are two undeniable historical events that ALL Afrikan people share no matter what age, language, or place of birth. We know we are eldest civilization on earth birthing all human life and creating for them the culture of science, art, religion, language, and the like which gave birth to the whole world fostering great and mighty nations we see today. However recently in our history, starting around 1441 the continent of Afrika and beloved peoples underwent traumatic life- altering events where our beloved Afrikan brothers and sisters were forcefully removed from their homelands and the “Scramble for Afrika”, after the Berlin Conference of 1884 was held in Europe which allotted European nations the rights to and ownership of Afrikan lands.

During these events, 700 million and more Afrikans were forced to migrate to the Diaspora to work and build the Western society via the, “European Slave Trade of Afrikan People”. At first this was seen as simply one people traveling to other areas to work, but soon Afrikan people were kidnapped and sold to distant lands for economical benefits. The majority of the people were from the coast of West Afrikan countries. Afrikans who were forced to migrate however did resist and started their battles for freedom on the continent, the leading to the holding quarters, then onto the ships that unfortunately dispersed them to foreign lands. Millions died fighting, and even through themselves overboard instead of being captives. Our dear brothers and sisters could have not imagined that for the next 500 plus years we would undergo extreme forced cultural change that would lead to the lost of identity, original language, and cultural religious practices, thus uprooting us from our Afrikan moral and ethnical principals. This caused the Afrikan taken to Americas and other areas to receive fictitious names like Negro, Black, Colored, Black Americans, Afrikan-American, and other names found through out the Diaspora. Afrikan People who remember the ordeal claim, “We are none of these, we are Afrikan people”! The Berlin Conference in 1884 allowed European nations to decide for themselves to claim territorial rights and resources to our homeland by the signing of treaties.

In the late nineteenth century, the European imperial powers engaged in a major territorial scramble and occupied most of the continent, creating many colonial nation- states, seizing Afrikan lands placing Afrikan people under forced occupation. Kingdom states were forced to join together or family kingdoms were separated, and areas were given new names. Lines of demarcation that occurred during colonial rule caused the Afrikan neutral ways of government and economy to become unstable, and impaired its functioning bringing about a collapse on a number of once sovereign kingdoms that are still being felt in African politics today, because we are using the structural system left behind from the colonial era. The only two independent nations maintained: Liberia, an independent state which was settled by Africans who was previously forced to serve in the Americans, along side those who sojourner freely to the Americas; and Abyssinia that defeated the colonialist at Magdale and yet again at the Battle of Adwa. Abyssinian victory over these outside forces retained the sovereignty of the country (and unspokenly ….. ALL Afrikan people), and because of this victory we in the West have never been slaves, and we on the continent have never been completely colonized. We all have just been occupied.

In America the stolen Afrikan fought breaking the chins of captivity, fought thorough segregation and Jim-Crowism, fought for civil rights, justice, and freedom which lead to ALL peoples of the world to migrate and live their God-given life in the Americas. Meanwhile in the 1900’s the first Pan-African Congress was meeting in London setting precedence for our brothers and sisters on the continent to continue the struggle for libration. By the 1950’s Afrikan countries were on the path of creating various political and economical organizations to place back Afrika coherence. Starting around 1956 with Tunisia, followed by Ghana in 1957, Afrikan countries on the continent began to gain control of their land, freedom from colonialism, and putting an end to apartheid.

The Afrikan in America and Afrikan from the continent together, must see that we have shed blood for one another to maintain our dignity as people and to foster the spirit of eternal fraternal brotherhood.

This is the community center will focus on Afrikan Heritage Peoples regardless of language, religion or place of birth to serve them on social, educational, and economical levels of interaction. It is expected that through education of such historical events, it will be possible to have a direct and positive impact on the unity of Afrikan People throughout the world, who can now see that we are one people,…. because we all share this history and experience.

In the Diaspora we are all here regardless of what side of the paradigm we come from. Given this we in the Diaspora make the 55 national country of Afrika and the call can be made, that from the efforts of the African Union on the continent, the call for the unification of ALL Afrikan people in the homeland and Diaspora can be made. And we all can be housed and nurtured in, The Center of Afrikan Unity”. 567 years of occupation has separated Afrikan Heritage peoples from one another leaving unfamiliarity. So in order for us to regain the mental and spiritual sense, the nation needs a center of Afrikan Unity in Harlem regardless of where we are born, what langue we speak, and what religion we practice, is even more vital so that we can reacquaint with one another given the shared experience, AS ONE AFRIKAN PEOPLE.

Inclusion there are many more items that can be spoken of, but given the time, Afrikan Unity of Harlem, Inc would again like to that Her Excellency Ambassador Lila Ratsifandrihamanana, Permanent Representative of the AU in New York for giving us this opportunity to share with the Union our organizational achievements.

If the union have any questions, concerns, updates, or comments we can take them now.

Thank you,
