Hurricane Katrina Coming to Louisiana
Hurricane Katrina Coming to Louisiana magnify
A good friend of mine who goes to school at LSU has left her place in Baton Rouge seeking higher ground.  The entire city of New Orleans has been evacuated.  Hurricane Katrina is on its way and there's every indication that this storm is going to do a huge amount of damage.

Hopefully, for her sake, everything will be ok.  But, it's not going to be pretty.  New Orleans is actually located below sea level and this hurricane is a category 5, with wind gusts up to 213 mph.  Experts expect waters to rise about 10 to 20 feet above normal.

So, think good thoughts for my friend Sarah and others in Louisiana, Mississippi and Georgia.

Cap Lounge: RIP
Cap Lounge: RIP magnify

Last night, the Cap Lounge burned to the ground.   My fraternity alumni group, the SigEp Feds normally meets there every Tuesday for wing night.  We were actually there just hours before the fire started.  It's horrible.  For more pics of the damage and the goodness that was the Cap Lounge, check  out the SigEp Feds photo blog.

Obsessed with Online Risk
Obsessed with Online Risk magnify

While at the bar, a saw a big map of the world...and of course, my drunk chain of thoughts made me think, "Hey, I would love to play Risk!"  One of the best, strategic board games, Risk is one of my favorites.

So, where does one turn while drunk and curious?  The Internet?  DING!  This Web site allows you to download the game of Risk and play others around the country over a server.  SWEET!  No more begging "please, will you play me?  Pleeeeeeeease?  We need a fourth!"  No more assembling a board with pieces that scatter everywhere.  All that is left is pure goodness.  There's even a chat function that allows you to strategize with other players...or in my case, talk crap and eventually plead for mercy.

You can play a few times for free or you can pay $25 (which is cheaper than buying the board game new, by the way) and play as much as you want.  The pay version comes with all sorts of different maps, from the Civil War to the Roman Empire, providing even more landscape for Shawn to get his butt whipped by some punk teenagers from coast-to-coast.

My suggestion: if you want to blow a whole weekend, this is a great way to make that dream a reality.  At the very least, download the free demo and give it a test spin.

Sensations Without Representation 9, Blue Balls 8
Sensations Without Representation 9, Blue Balls 8 magnify

Yesterday was a huge game for the Sensations Without Representation.  We picked up our first "for real, non-forfeit" win, moving us to 2-1 in the competitive Mind Eraser Conference!  We beat Blue Balls in a barn-burner with a score of 9-8.

Going ahead at one point 7-1 after a huge grand slam by Jamie, the Sensations defense started to fall apart in the summer sun.  But, the substanial point cushion was just enough to push the Sensations over the top in the end.  Props go out to my g/f Erika for running accidentally towards the pitcher's mound instead of second base, causing a distraction which ultimately scored a run.  Good job babe!  :)  We also went 2-2 at the bar in flip cup, bring our drinking record to 6-3-1.

Seeing as though we got beat 1-24 in the first game, and were 0-3 in kickball and barely ever showed up at the bar this point of the season last year, I think we're doing awesome.

(If you're confused about the picture, the home/away teams are decided by a round of rock/paper/scissors, yet another reason the league is awesome.)

P.S.  That is the Washington Monument in the background.  The field, which you can see in this photo, is the green, grassy area between the WWII Memorial and the Washington Monument.

Wings at the Cap Lounge
Wings at the Cap Lounge magnify
Wow, my stomach is not cool with me this morning.  It's probably because I ate like 25 chicken wings at the Capital Lounge for dinner last night, and washed them down with some cold brews.  But, for 10 cents a wing and $2.50 a beer on Tuesday nights, how can you not indulge yourself in a chicken feast?

The Cap Lounge is awesome.  The decor is like a confused political operative's rec room.  The walls are covered with Democratic and Republican slogans, buttons, photos and posters of politicos, from LBJ to Nixon to Reagan to Clinton and more.

The crowd is young, mostly political staffers and interns meeting up for some cheap eats and drinks after a long day on the Hill.  But, it's August in DC, so most of the folks were thinking about wings made out of chicken instead of wings based on ideology.  Of course, a debate or two would pop up here and there, but it was all in good fun.

So, my recommendation?  Bring some friends and head out to the Cap Lounge and check out their specials.

  • Monday - Half Price Pizza
  • Tuesday - 10 Cent Wings
  • Wednesday - 25 Cent Taco Night ($1 minimum)
  • Thursday - $10 Bud Light Pitchers

Mmmmmmm...bar food.
