Today's we began working on our Science webelos pin. The science pin is going to take us several meetings because there is just so much interesting and cool experiments to do. Today's meeting was almost completely devoted to magnetism, how it works, & demonstrations. We then took various materials like magnets, cork, pins and dishes of water and made our vary own compasses! Some of the magnets we used to magnetise the needles weren't ideal so a few didn't work that well. However everyone learned a lot about the scientific process and what it takes to learn, experiment, come up with a theory and then actualy put our theories into practice!

Today was the 2009 Klondike Derby, a.k.a. "DaKoTaRod" The Klondike Derby is actually a boy scout event where several station are set up to teach boys winter themed outdoor skills. Webelos are encouraged to come as well, not only to learn some new skills and get a sneak peak at what boy scouting is all about, but also to get some exposure to different Boy Scout troops.

There were approximately 8 stations set up which include fire building, orienteering, ice fishing, a sled pull, and much much more. It was incredibly cold, so our Webelos didn't stay for the entire event, but they did get to go to a couple. The orienteering was quite grueling, but a fun skill to pick up. We only were able to find 3 of the 12 stations. The snow was up to some of the boys knees, so once we got our barring, it was quite a challenge for us to make it to each station in the time allotted.

Fire building was probably everyone’s favorite. They learned about the differences between kindling, tinder, and fuel and even helped forge the forest for materials the fires. All and all yet another example of a great time with the wonderful boys form the might pack 515!

Today's we worked on our Readyman webelos pin. We spent a great deal of time going over various emergency responses to various medical situations. We covered everything from what to do with frost bite or a burn, to how to properly remove a tick! After our snack, each of the boys assembled their own private first aid kits and demonstrated how the various itmes would and should be used.
